Just curious if anyone else picked up this set? It only being $10 for the first week is a crazy good deal. I still have the physical version, but couldn't pass this up.

@PogueSquadron

I always liked that idea about Mother Brain. It was interesting.

And lets be honest, it works better than this:

I scanned everything on my previous normal playhrough, so I can theoretically run through this with minimal scanning. It's Anand's dream.

...Yet I'm scanning everything anyway. The log entries are the story!

I remember that Wasteland 1 on... C64, maybe... came with a logbook, rather than in-game text. Because in-game text took too much memory, or couldn't display enough characters, or something. So, instead of in-game text, the game would just direct you to read a certain page of the logbook.

I think you would enjoy reading that logbook!

(Although it was intentionally out of order, and if you tried to read it sequentially, the first entry was about some girl starting to strip. But then she turns around and shoots you! Because you were trying to read the logbook!)

Anyway, here's my recent spiel on trying the Trilogy for the first time:

Anand said:
So, yeah. I've HAD a steelbook copy of the trilogy for years and years, but I never opened it, because:
a) It's worth too much, but more importantly;
b) I never had the slightest inclination to do so.

But I've finally played it! Because I found it at the library!

When it comes to the Metroid Prime Trilogy, I am, as some would say, a hater. Everyone always referred to it as "Super Metroid in 3D". As someone who would run through the original Metroid every other day after school (along with my chums), I consider myself to be a hardcore 2D Metroid fan, and I seriously could not disagree more with that sentiment. The atmosphere is totally different, the graphical style is totally different, the music is totally different, and the gameplay focus is totally different (i.e. lock-on, SCANNING). But apparently, not many share my sentiment. I mean, either I'm crazy here, or the rest of the world is crazy.

Well, I gave it another chance. And firmly replanted myself in the everyone-else-is-crazy camp. (It is a camp of one.) I'm not going to reiterate all of my issues with Metroid Prime, but I don't think time has been very kind to it. It still runs very smoothly, which is a positive, but the realism looks a bit dated, and the existing flaws in the game design stand out a bit more, from my futuristic perspective. I also realized something else while playing. The environment in Prime is quite oppressive, in a way I never felt with 2D Metroid. Maybe it's just me, but I felt that 2D Samus was the master of her environment, subjugating it little bits at a time. But in Prime, Samus just feels like an insignificant visitor to a planet (one which feels too much like Earth). She has to wait for doors to open. She has to interact with a bunch of machines to do anything. She has to whip out her fucking Inspector Gadget keycard all of the time... Anyway, I'll digress.

I was interested to try the new controls, since Prime was functional, but always felt stiff to me. They work pretty well. The advanced controls are VERY sensitive, to the point where you have to rest your wrist on something to avoid judder. Advanced is cool, but a bit stressful, like maintaining the 3D effect on the 3DS. I settled on the Standard controls, with lock-strafe, or whatever. It feels weird that locking on doesn't guarantee a hit, and I wish that I could adjust the bounding box, but I like the ability to smoothly move the reticle around and shoot from the hip. A positive change, I think. Still, I'm not sure the game was built for these controls. Sort of like the Twin Snakes, it feels a bit like bringing an handgun back to King Arthur's court. The enemies in Prime don't really seem prepared for six-gun Samus. They're kind of rigid and bullet-spongey. Enemy encounters feel somewhat awkward and stilted.

Anyway, I'll stop for now. How many of you guys actually have this game? What do you think of it?

Gamestop actually has (had?) a B2G1F sale on used Wii and DS games, so I considered grabbing some new-sold-as-used copies of Xenoblade and Prime Trilogy, talking someone else (Zero) into getting the third, and selling my steelbook for $rofit. But I'm really not feelin' this franchise. And Xenoblade might be better to play on a portable.

And, yes, I bought the Trilogy on Wii U, because it was $10, and because I am stupid.

What a wonderful sound.

That would tend to contradict the 'Everyone else is crazy' theory

Although I suppose you could be of the view that you are crazy AND everyone else is crazy too.

I'm just stupid. Everyone else is crazy.

@Anand

I would contend that buying something you don't like is a stupid kind of crazy

Got to Dark Agon last night. This game sure starts out pretty amazingly.

This whole game isn't as good on the whole as Prime 1 IMO (I prefer the more organic map traversal approach), but I think it's a great "second game." It kind of expects that you played the first game so it starts you off with more advanced stuff. It pretty much gets you into the action right away, getting you a little familiar with Aether and what's going down there. And it does some things that the first game doesn't do as much. It's more puzzly and IMO pulls off the whole "detective" aspect of Samus pretty well. I've played this game a couple times before, years ago, and I still find myself wanting to figure out what the hell happened to Aether. The visuals looks a lot better than Prime 1 IMO, but mainly I mean that in regards to Samus herself. It's not HD unfortunately but still looks pretty damn good for what is essentially a Gamecube game.

Anyway, TL;DR - I probably like this game more than most (but I haven't gotten too far in so maybe it gets worse).

You know whats fun? Bumbling through the game whilst half asleep. I must have fallen in the ditch near the Ice Beam half a dozen times.

@Shadowlink
That's like the story of my life. Starting a game at midnight and falling asleep within five minutes. Whenever I start playing now, I always put the TV and receiver on Sleep mode.

If they ever bring back this series I really hope they go with a different Space Pirate battle theme. It's not as jarring in Prime 2 but it does get old.

Finally got my butt handed to me by Omega Pirate. That was a pretty annoying boss, don't think I dented his health bar on my first attempt! He's down now. Only a few artifacts from the drifts and I'm hitting the crater. There's nothing scary in there... right?

@Anand

I'm still amazed I managed to stumble through to the save chamber. I was conking out around a couple of rooms before. I know I was running through that Chozo statue puzzle on auto-pilot.

It was only about 9PM too. I wandered into my bedroom and stuck the TV on. 20 minutes in a vegatative state with Futurama blaring in the background and then I was up and ready to go again.

I think I just missed my train nap on the way home from work that afternoon.

In more positive news, I grabbed the Wavebuster and Gravity Suit last night. Sitting just outside the Phazon Mines. Fun.

Can't finds the third Agon key. Feel like I'm going crazy. I've gone through all the doors I can go through.

Can't remember but will the game give me a hint at some point? I don't want to have to look anything up.

Finished Prime.

I'd love to gush about it but I doubt there is an original thing left to say about this game. Just know that I will mark it 10/10 and set it on a pedestal and keep it polished so that future mini-Conzos can learn all about it.

Might wait a week before hitting Prime 2. Found the last hour quite stressful. Rewarding, but stressful.

I got all my gear. A Plasma Beam, Phazon Suit, Grappling Hook, the works. I remember some stuff in Phendrana I still needed to get. I enter through an elevator and can go two ways. I choose one and make my way through the snowy landscape. There this one area I swear had a secret, but after looking around I just can't find anything. I melt some ice, cause some stalactites to fall and find a bunch of stuff. All this while trying to avoid all the respawning enemies as much as I can. I finally explore the entirety of Phendrana but I still haven't found this one passage I remember having an upgrade. Well, the only room I haven't been in is the second passage connected to the elevator I used to get there. Sure enough that's the one area I've been looking for the entire time.

After this I kinda realize all I really have left to do is get those artifacts. So I check my lore and see there's two in Phendrana I haven't gotten yet. One in that are where I thought there was a secret and one in another area I had been through. More dodging enemies and a google search leads me to having all artifacts except one. For some reason I missed scanning the lore for one of them. So I brought my eleven artifacts and scanned the one I missed. Looks like one more trip to the mines for me. I miss the Screw Attack. It's the best upgrade when you have to go through old areas again. You can just plow through anything. I imagine it like this gif, but Samus instead of Godzilla and Space Pirates instead of cars/buildings.

Just beat Amorbis in MP2. While this game is structurally different from other Metroid games, it's still pretty freaking awesome. That Dark Suit is bad, ass.

That's really it for MP2...I mean, for whatever gripes I have with it, I feel like it's probably the coolest game.
02/15/15, 05:59
Up to the Sanctuary Fortress. Heres the thing about this game, more so than in Prime 1. When you hit an area that you really need to backtrack on, they let you know. Maybe this is against the Metroid philosophy, but the world's are so complex, I imagine it'd be super difficult to do without. I guess the thing that hurts MP2 is that the worlds are so isolated, making backtracking seem like a chore. Still, I haven't minded all that much. There's an annoying part in Torvis that has you going back to the Temple Grounds for something, which was kind of a haul. Other than that I haven't really been put off by the backtracking. More than anything I actually think the Dark World is really impressive. It would've been easy for Retro to put some purple coat of paint over the Light World, but this really is a MUTATED version of Arther. Things are growing in different places, and the world can't exactly be traversed the same way. Like it or hate it, I still think you have to admit their attention to detail with that stuff was crazy.

Actually, MP1 always gave you hints, but for some reason I feel like those hints were a little less out of the way.

Edit: Just got the Spider Ball. Great bosses in this game. While this game's structure still isn't the greatest or most unpredictable, it does some really cool things that I don't think the other games do as well. There's some awesome morph ball stuff happening here, even if in the end it seems more gamey than before (not unlike TP's arbitrary Spinner Tracks).

The problem with Prime 2 (at least my problem with Prime 2) is that the cool stuff is back loaded. You start off in Agon Wastes, go through a dark version of that and after getting everything there your next destination is Torvus Bog. The game just isn't pretty at the beginning. Don't get me wrong, the graphics are great. But the world is a place I don't really want to be. The Sanctuary Fortress, the light suit, screw attack/space jump and spider ball are all awesome, but are also found later in the game.

As far as the backtracking goes, I understand Retro wanted to do something a little different than the first game. But I think the world design of Prime 2 is a little too complicated. You can't just go from point a to point b. The way you have to navigate both the light and dark worlds can be very disorientating and off putting.
02/22/15, 07:55
Gojira, yes! It might be the only game to employ a light / dark world mechanic where the light world has already been laid waste by famine, drought and destruction. :) A bigger difference would have been more enjoyable. Do areas recover when you restore their energy controllers? If they do, then it's a fair choice but I don't remember that...

I feel like Prime 2 has a much more Western aesthetic overall than the first. Retro were more confident in their own abilities and so they probably didn't draw on the existing Metroid art style and color choices in the same way as when they were proving themselves. Still an amazing game that I'm very happy to replay with better controls but it's more noticeable playing them back to back how Echoes is less Japanese, more typically Western darkness and grit. It's more Looking Glass, less Nintendo. I love both approaches though, so... eh!
02/22/15, 13:59
I didn't mind the second game's darker environments. It was a different change of pace. Like the first game, you get to Aether after the shit hit the fan, but I liked reading about what was different about Aether's reaction to the Phazon meteor (leviathan).

All in all there's something alien about the world/art design in Echoes that I really like.
02/22/15, 18:00
Ok ok - with all this chatter I couldn't resist. Started Prime 2 last night. Just entered the Dark World for the 1st time and not sure what to make of it yet. I can already tell it's going to stress me out constantly looking for these damn crystals!
I'll really need to spend more time but yeah, the graphics have been amped, the scanning is a lot easier and, boy, are they fond of a cut scene when Samus walks into a kill room? Already more cut scenes than in the whole of the 1st game! I'm not complaining... just observing.
