Multiplayer in general took a step back without being able to chat.

BUT EVERYONE LOVES HANDHELDS, JUST ASK JAPAN

That Gore Magala is all sorts of fun. Let me tell you.

I just got done with all the quest offline in HR6. I ended up having 4 urgent quest in HR6 and a ton of side missions. It is crazy all of it

I have to say, this is by far my favorite game in the series (after playing through 3U and some of Frontier). Even if I am stuck at Pink Rathian right now. They did some crazy buffs to all the monsters in the AI department, and by God does it make this game hard.

Wow I didn't expect this game to be as much fun but I'm loving this so much now
02/24/15, 16:45
This is my first monster hunter game, so far im loving it but there seems like so much information always being thrown at you. Also I'm nervous to jump online cuz I know I'm not very good.

The Seltas Queen is my new favorite thing.

First batch of free DLC is live. Go geddit!!!!!

So I've been playing this a bit "off-and-on" lately. It's okay. I'm not being wowed by it, which is pretty much par for the course for me with this franchise.

How long does it take to really get into the "meat" of the game? So far I'm just gathering mushrooms and flowers and killing five mother Jaggis. Not exactly thrilling stuff.

@GameDadGrant
On a recent Giantbombcast the guys from 8-4 Play spent like an hour talking about this game and got me really hyped for it in some ways but also sorta turned me off of it because they just reconfirmed my suspicion is that this game is only really fun when played consistently with the same group of 3 or 4 people, ideally locally. Not that you can't solo it, but it's like you're only getting part of the experience, not the "true" experience (i.e. the way they play it in Japan).

So I'm super torn, it's such a big time commitment... which is why I haven't shelled out the $40 yet... even though I really want to!

To be honest, I probably wouldn't have spent $40 on it either. But when I got the NEW3DSXL, I opted for the cooler-looking (IMO, anyway) Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate unit, so I got the game with the system automatically. I figured I should at least give this game a shot. I mean, I own it already, so why not.

I dunno. I mean, I guess it's kind of a good time-waster. I can play it while I wait for my son to get out of school, or while my wife watches TV or something. It doesn't seem all that engaging right now, but maybe I'm missing something.

I think the appeal is teaming up with a group of friends to kill bigger and bigger monsters for better and better loot so you can craft amazing weapons and armor that look super cool and enable you to kill even bigger monsters. That's the gameplay loop, and it sounds appealing to me except I don't have a group of friends to play with. Hmm.... there's a place near my apartment called The Brooklyn Strategist where people get together and play table-top games, maybe I should post a flyer and see if there are any MH players in the neighborhood?

@deathly_hallows

Or just play online. I'm up for some if anyone is here! Though I've already put a good amount of time in it. The game of course has some stuff to gather/easy monsters to kill but it's the big quests that are really fun. Every weapon works differently so you can easily switch things up and master a new style if you want.

This game (along with Pokemon Shuffle) has utterly consumed me. So awesome. The only drawback is the ergonomics of the 3DS, but my custom grip should almost be here.

It's so good. It's colossal. Have you guys started playing online much yet? I haven't even tried it, since I've been plowing through the single-player stuff.

I'm back to Bowguns. Currently rocking a Grenade Launcher +. I thought I'd have to switch, like in Tri, when the first High Rank monster was one-shotting me. But the shitty, high-rank Velociprey armor that I made is serving me well.

My main loadout has Negate Stun, Gathering +2, Psychic, and Attack (S). Pretty sweet. Negate Stun is key when you're rolling solo.

Anyway, this game is fucking awesome. It's such an essential 3DS game. It has a fucking OPERA HOUSE. And the first opera was fucking awesome.

And there are all sorts of other weird extras like Meownster Hunters, Trading, Cat Fishing, etc. What an incredible package.

@deathly_hallows
Monster Hunter provides tons of solo fun. I'm at *goes to check* 54 hours right now, and I haven't even jumped online yet. With very little grinding to this point. And there's still plenty of single-player content to go.

Seriously, just get it.

@GameDadGrant
Which quests have you completed? You haven't started the main content of the game yet. Gathering quests are quite limited in number once you get into the game proper. And there's always some huge monster trying to stop you from gathering. By killing you.

@VofEscaflowne
I'm down for some online. Anybody else want to jump in?

@Anand

Lemme know when you want to go on. I still have a bunch of low level HR quests to do anyway.
03/10/15, 22:24
@Anand

I'm on the second page of quests, after the random crap the Caravaneer gives to you. I'll keep grinding on the low-level stuff for now, I guess. Do you recommend doing a lot of the offline stuff first, or can I jump into online fairly soon without the risk of getting curb-stomped?

@VofEscaflowne

If I'm not too much of a burden, I'd like to check out some of the online stuff. If you guys get a group together, count me in. How do y'all communicate? NW Chat, or...?
03/10/15, 22:33
@GameDadGrant

You can bring up a keyboard to chat while in the lobby area but while actually fighting, you can only use preset messages. At least you can edit several preset messages to your liking though!
03/10/15, 22:36
@GameDadGrant@VofEscaflowne
Grant, you're not doing the Weapon Tutorials, right? In which the goal for every quest is to kill a Great Jaggi? If so, those are optional.

Anyway, there should be low-level quests online, as well. If the Quest is way beyond your level, then you won't be allowed to take it. Lets all jump online together, then! And harvest mushrooms! Exciting! (We can communicate however you want. NW Chat or whatever.)

Where's our fourth?!

@VofEscaflowne
Whaaat, seriously? You can't type messages during fights anymore?
03/10/15, 22:40
Edited: 03/10/15, 22:41
@Anand

Pretty sure that you can't... unless if you can edit preset messages while in battle which is a tiny extra step to chat I guess. I've never really needed to chat with anyone during fights. Usually the goals are clear enough and if playing with other experienced players, everyone will know what to do or not do. The only annoying thing is that some people don't understand that you must NOT attack while another player is mounted. I had one that kept throwing me off because of it
03/10/15, 22:43
I personally think this game is mind-numbingly boring in single player, and only worthwhile as a multiplayer game. It's a good game to hang out and chat and kill stuff, seeing how well we can coordinate. And yeah, it's definitely a time-sink game, as it requires playing a lot to get the most out of it. It's even ideal to set aside a good-sized chunk of time when playing it, as quests can take a while. I also think the good stuff of the game doesn't come until later, when high and G rank starts.

@VofEscaflowne I don't think I have you on 3DS, though not sure. What is your code? Mine's in my profile if you want to add me.
