Through all the stories and all the timelines found in the Zelda series... nobody saw this coming. Koei Tecmo and Nintendo team up to take the Dynasty Warriors formula, toss in a lot of Zelda-franchise fan service, and blend that stuff together in a funky mish-mash of Zelda lore that only the Wind Fish could dream up. That game is called Hyrule Warriors. I was admittedly hesitant on this title upon first announcement. I had no idea what the Dynasty Warriors franchise was all about. I knew I loved Zelda. It wasn't until the excellent Nintendo Direct (embedded below) which sold me on the idea. I'm seeing a lot of reviews, which started coming in today, and they seem to agree that this isn't much of a Zelda game. I have to point out, the name borrows the Warriors from Dynasty Warriors and not Zelda. This alone helps me see what Koei Tecmo and Nintendo were aiming for. This isn't going to be a Zelda main-line game nor is it striving to be. For what it's goals are, and for what Nintendo has contributed to it, I'm pretty excited myself and now there's less than 10 days remaining. The game releases on September 26th, 2014. Fun Facts1.) Sends Link and 12 other playable characters from various Zelda universes into other universes. Mixing things up! 2.) Loaded with various locales, enemies, bosses, items, and music from throughout the Legend of Zelda series. 3.) Series offers plenty of DLC options (detailed below). 4.) Tons of combos and special moves for each character. 5.) 2-player Co-Op (though I hear it's pretty hard on the Wii U processing) 6.) Unique 'Adventure Mode' taking players back into the NES' The Legend of Zelda for a mix of challenges and adventure! (at least on the map) DLC OptionsAmazon.com - Buy from here an you'll get codes for Twilight Princess Costumes Best Buy - Buy from here an you'll get codes for Skyward Sword Costumes Gamestop - Buy from here an you'll get codes for The Ocarina of Time Costumes NOTE: While the Retailer-Specific DLC is day one, shortly after release all DLC will be available for purchase from Nintendo for presumably a small fee. I have only done about the first 8 missions but I am loving the hell outta this game! In a weird and slightly uncomfortable way, it is quickly vying for the top spot in my list of favorite Legend of Zelda titles. That's just ... weird, right??
Anyway, but there is a bit of a buzzkill on the DLC. I know most everyone seems to love DLC and that it makes me some kind of lamer from Squaresville for thinking it's a consumer-unfriendly business model. But, I feel that this content should have been on the disc from the start. Especially since, if I'm not mistaken, most if not all of this content was planned, if not ready, at launch. I can't support that and it makes me sad because I feel like 15 years ago this stuff would have been included from the start, or, at worst, an expansion pack.
Now, I'm not looking to start the world's 19,745th debate on DLC and I'm not looking to convince anyone to change their mind on DLC. I'm just adding my voice to the topic.
Back to the happy part though, the game is phenomenal. I'm so glad it got made and it's such a pleasant surprise. I'm already hoping for a sequel or even off-shoot franchise to emerge from this, but, it feels like a one-off for a lot of reasons. =\ Ah well. Glad we got this one at least! =) |

It is undoubtedly a gigantic game right out of the box. That was never in question. It's just a perception thing and so I shared my perspective. I think a lot of times this topic can be compared to looking at a group of clouds and trying to decide where one cloud ends. In other words, everyone probably has their own criteria for whether or not the game they've purchased feels complete -- and "time to credits" is just one factor. We can probably all relate to that, yea? So, to me, though you can clearly make an argument that some content is "part of the game" and some is not... it's just "extra," to me, as I look at the DLC, it all feels like "part of the game." And, to be fair, I'm not sure I could think of something that was offered as part of a game's DLC that I wouldn't then consider to be "part of the game." It's almost by definition in my opinion. Again, my point in sharing this is not to convince anyone of anything. Only to try and make my opinions a little easier to understand (for anyone who cares =P ). So, let me share this: a lot of my frustration with DLC stems from how I would wrestle with the process. Maybe if I had better income this would not be the case, but I'm very careful and deliberate with my purchases. I tend to put a lot of thought into deciding whether or not I want something and then, if I want it, I try to make it happen financially. That decision-making process is not particularly comfortable or enjoyable for me. I don't like doing it. So, the more companies make me have to do it, the less happy I am about the whole thing. Doesn't mean I can't still totally LOVE that thing. But, that love may have been dampened a little. I'm also rather OCD when it comes to works of fiction. You should ask my wife sometime about how I make notes that try to put huge game franchises like Castlevania in their proper chronological order. That's just one small example So, if you put those two things together, it means that I would literally rather have something never come out than have it come out as DLC. I know, I've just lost all my credibility, right? But, I see it like this... if something really is "extra" then, leave it on the cutting room floor and don't make me wrestle with those processes I just described. And if something is part of the proper game, then include it from day one and let's all sing songs of joy. =) ....whew. That was a lot. Maybe it made sense, maybe it didn't. ... but, it's frickin' late - cut me some slack =) |

@NinSageHaha, that's hilarious! I didn't necessarily feel like a bad person... but I did feel like a small child waging war on a tiny colony of ants! I'm not used to games where I'm basically a God and I can slaughter hundreds of enemies in seconds. But wow, so far I'm impressed, it's a cool game, but very different than what I thought even after reading a ton of reviews, like it seems it's basically a rush against the clock, there is no challenge in defeating enemies, and the only time I've failed a mission is when I've been ignoring the goals and/or not doing them fast enough. I'm not a huge fan of this system because I don't like games with time limits, and even though there is usually no visible clock this game seems to be keeping track of time in the background. Also is it bad that I sort of want to just skip the story and play Adventure Mode? Adventure Mode RULES! And... I love the music, especially the rock versions of classic Zelda tunes, they're hilarious and badass at the same time. And... should I just play with the Classic Controller? The WUG seems to have been ignored, there's no option to even move the map or HUD to the bottom screen, so I guess it serves no purpose at all. EDIT: Questions, does it ever get to a point where you can decided which keep to take over etc.? Is there any strategy or does the battle always play out in a linear fashion and require you to do the specific actions in the order the NPCs tell you to? I think I'd like this game a lot more if I could win or lose a battle based on which points on the map I decided to attack. |
