Code Name S.T.E.A.M. Review (Nintendo 3DS) (9.5)  by
So, there is a new 3DS game coming out in 2015 called Code Name S.T.E.A.M. This is the thread to talk about it. Although, we don't know much about it, other than it's turn-based strategy with some action elements in it. Also, it's being developed by the good people at Intelligent Systems, so we know it'll be good. Right? Right. Probably.

In any case...Code Name S.T.E.A.M. everybody! Who is interested in this new IP from Nintendo? Let's discuss some strategy stuff!

I'm just sorta dumbfounded by the progress bar, it creeps along long after all the enemies have made their moves, what's going on, is the game loading something? If so what?

I wonder if it's the same on the New 3DS, I have a weird feeling that those progress bars are much shorter (or not even there at all) on the newer hardware.

I don't rally like the aesthetic. I think Intelligent systems could have done better, specially looking at the Fire Emblem games on 3DS. It looks cheaply made. With that said, I actually like the gameplay, the camera movement feels a bit wonky but hopefully I'll get a new 3DS soon enough and won't have to put up with it. I'm not getting the game anytime soon, however. I'm a bit confused by the seam motif, it seems you can regain it by moving backwards; you would think it would deplete and that would be it until your next turn but I'm probably over-analyzing this.

@Tranquilo
I think it's a cool mechanic - it lets you explore an area nearby - and as long as you don't encounter an enemy or fire off your gun, you can retrace your steps and regain the steam, then use it to move in another direction.

Finally played this demo and wow, I enjoyed it a lot. It's exactly my kind of game. I've liked turn-based strategy in which you have to manage your action points ever since playing the first Fallout. And it's the first time I've played one with this point of view, where you constantly have to watch your surroundings, making sure you're not walking into an ambush. I mean, it's no different than, say, X-COM, but the third person view adds a lot to it.

The levels included in the demo are pretty good, too. Lots of secrets, lots of verticality. I'm hyped.

@Guillaume

I have to agree on all your points. I had a great time with the demo too. I'll definitely get this one when it comes out.

I still haven't finished up the demo yet. I mean...I *have* finished it. I think? I got to the end, but then it basically told me I can start over with different characters? I dunno. When exactly is the demo actually "done?" Anyone know?

In any case, I enjoyed what I played, and I'm going to grab this for sure. I'm a little swamped right now with Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and the Donkey Kong Land games. Plus I've got Majora's Mask 3D on the backburner right now. And Xenoblade Chronicles 3D coming soon. Gah! Too many games, not enough time.

How many of you got this, now that it's out? How far are you? Are you enjoying it?

So Nintendo is updating the game, with the option to speed up enemy turns. 2x speed on 3DS and 3x speed on N3DS. That pretty much takes care of the biggest issue with the game I think.

I actually really want to play this, but as usual... so many games, so little time. Maybe this summer.

Oh, I missed the "3X on NEW 3DS" part. That's great!

It'd be nice if it drops soon since I feel the game is sort of broken without it.

I tried out the demo for this game and it seemed pretty solid, and an interesting mix of ideas. I was glad to see that they're going to add in a speed-up option because the CPU turn is indeed painfully slow. Now, the only hesitance I have is the consensus that the game is too difficult, but I could probably just use an FAQ if I got stuck. I'll probably get the game at some point.

@GameDadGrant You're basically "done" with the demo, but you can replay the first mission with your full team of 4 and try to go for the high score by completing each of its three levels in 8 turns or less.

I'm interested in this game again now that enemy turns will be shorter, this might be my Summer jam.

I got this game on release, but homework and other games distracted after a week or so of playing. I've been meaning to get back to STEAM, but now I think I'll hold off until that update hits.

@anon_mastermind Was definitely one of my biggest issues with the game based on reading reviews and thinking ew... that would frustrate me so much.

Will probably check this out eventually.

@Hero_Of_Hyrule
I played the first few stages but got distracted by other things too. I'm also going to wait for the update to go back to it.

The update is out!

Also, I received this game for my birthday. Great timing! I'll be booting it up tonight.

@ploot

I kinda want to jump in on it as well but also have a few other games I want to play... hmm.

And happy belated birthday?

The update that speeds up enemy movement is nice. Like, really nice.
04/13/15, 14:50
@GameDadGrant
Yep.
It's too bad the game didn't release with this feature. I'm sure it would've reviewed better.

@ploot

Right?!? So weird that they put it out like that originally. Usually Intelligent Systems are really good about making their games as good as possible for its launch. But I'm glad they fixed this.

Guess I should be thankful we live in an age of easily patchable games.

EDIT I wonder if the game should be re-evaluated with critics. When a developer remedies a major gripe with their product that may have brought public perception down, is it fair for it to be seen (and re-reviewed) with said issues eliminated?

@ploot

Polygon actually revisited their review and changed their score from 3.5 to a 6.0

@VofEscaflowne
Whoa. That's still pretty harsh.
Well, I suppose people have preferences. Good of them to re-review though.
