I know nothing about football and even I know that was a stupid play call.

I find it funny how they got into a fight at the end there, what a pathetic display.

Brady was throwing 10 yard or less passes to wide open guys because Belichick/McDaniels identified ways to find holes in the Seahawks defense. His one long completion was a pass that any quarterback in the NFL or even NCAA could make to a wide open Gronkowski who beat a linebacker by a mile. Compare that to Wilson who isn't close to Rodgers as a passer who was threading needles 25 yards down the field.

"He is a winner" is exactly the kind of facile argument that I assume you would scoff at in a scientific context. If they run the ball with Lynch there and score then he's no longer a winner.

Those short passes were essentially their running game. The Patriots, as a team, only had 57 yards rushing on 21 attempts because the Seahawks defense was swarming their backs. Those short passes opened up the field for them.

And to be fair, Wilson wasn't lighting it up early. (And that's coming from someone that wanted Seattle to win.) He didn't complete a pass until, what, the second quarter?

Brady wasn't good early either. The team adjusted, and he put the team on his back to get the scores they needed late. Seattle mistakes helped that, but he still did a lot to help the Pats win. Like him or not, he does win. A lot. Four Super Bowls is up there in Bradshaw/Montana territory, and that's rare air.

@missypissy
Short passes were quite effective and replaced the run game, and explains his short yards/completion. Didn't Brady have the highest number of completions in a Superbowl? Sure it wasn't his best game, the two INTs would have been held up as the major reason for the loss, if they had lost, but when it counted in the 4th quarter he was on top of his game, IMO.

@ludist210

Sure, I'm not saying he's not a very good quarterback, but to say that he's the best because he's won four Super Bowls with great coaching and great defense is oversimplifying. If you give Rodgers or Manning in his prime the same situation, all evidence suggests they'd have even better results.

It's also worth noting that Seattle had injuries as the game went on that definitely made things a lot easier for the Patriots offense.

@Jargon
That's going to be the big issue for years to come when talking about Brady, he's very much a product of the New England system. 2007 when he went down in game 1, Matt Cassel took over and won 11 games. Manning goes down for the Colts and they struggle to win 2 prior to him going to the Broncos.

It also took Brady 6 Super Bowls to tie Montana in wins (4) and finally beat him in touchdown passes (12). No doubt Brady is a solid QB, but there are better options out there.

Rivers had the same strategy against the Seahawks and did better overall than Brady did.

Just for clarification, I'm saying Brady should not have been Super Bowl MVP. I'm not saying he is a bad QB.

@Jargon

I don't disagree about the injuries that Seattle had. Losing Jeremy Lane early hurt them.

I might agree that Rodgers might do as well in the Patriots system, but Manning? He's lost two Super Bowls (one very badly to essentially the same team that Tom Brady just beat). Or we'll go even farther. Peyton Manning in the playoffs: 11-13 (1-2 in Super Bowls). Tom Brady in the Playoffs: 21-8 (4-2 in Super Bowls).

Maybe the Pats do have a good system. They did get Matt Cassel a huge contract after one season as a starter...
02/03/15, 00:53
@ludist210

Yes, Manning. He had terrible defenses early in his career and was losing to elite Patriots defenses in the playoffs. And the Seahawks this year were not close to what they were last year.
02/03/15, 00:57
@Jargon

Can't give you Manning. The Colts had top-notch offenses when he was there, he just wasn't very good in the playoffs. He still isn't...Eli is a better big-game QB that Peyton (and Eli arguably plays on worse teams player for player, and it pains me to say that because I can't stand the Giants). I seem to remember a bad 41-0 playoff loss to the Chad Pennington-led Jets at one point in his career...

His defenses didn't help him though, I will give you that.

@ludist210
I think anyone could do well in the system if Cassel could. Obviously Manning's post season record complicates things, because he is getting known as a choker in the big games...but if you take the 2008 season (Cassel's) you could see that Manning would do just as well, if not better, in that system. Both had near identical stats (27/12 for Manning, 21/11 for Cassel), yards per attempt were about the same (7.2 for Manning, 7.12 for Cassel) while Manning had more yards (4006) over Cassel (3693).

@Shadowlink

Is that the guy you talked about before?
02/23/15, 22:13
@Mr_Mustache

Yeah. Looks like the Lions have snaffled him up.

Supposedly those are good stats? I dunno.

I have to hand it to him. I'm no fan of Hayne, but it takes guts to walk away from a guaranteed contract of millions to chase after a dream like this.
