Shadowlink said:deathly_hallows said:I hate using the pointer for aiming because it's a finicky, cumbersome, jittery, awkward mess. No. I assure you I do hate the controls for these games. Granted, some people like them, but I wish they'd offer the option to play with the original controls so everyone could enjoy these games (the first 2 at least, 3 is beyond redemption, IMHO). You have to understand, I feel the same way about Metroid Prime that some people feel about Super Mario Bros. 3 or Super Metroid, I never thought the GCN game was bad or needed fixing, I thought it was brilliant and played perfectly. Think of some of your favorite games, ones you thought were perfect, would you really like them better with motion controls? What about if you had to waggle the controller to make Mario jump instead of pressing a button, if that doesn't sound appealing to you then you can understand why adding motion controls to Prime isn't appealing to me. |

Mop it up said:I think the controls work fine, but it's a shame they didn't add in more fine-tuning options for the Trilogy version and just copied Prime 3's controls. As a relatively early Wii game, Prime 3 doesn't have the best pointer control, and it's since been much refined in games like The Conduit and Call of Duty series that add a whole slew of options for tuning every aspect of the controls to one's liking. This is true, but for me I think the big issue is what Pogue pointed out, you have to keep the remote perfectly centered at all times or the camera spins or jitters, it's not a like an analog stick (or even a d-pad) that self-centers if you're not pressing it in a certain direction. Anyway, options are good, I really like how in Golden Eye you could either tweak the IR or just use the classic controller, I opted for classic but I'm glad the option for IR was there for the people who dig it. I still think I'll buy the Prime Collection, for $10 it's hard to pass up, and even though I have all the games individually on disc I'd have to hook up my old Wii to play the GCN games, which... hey I guess I could do if I was really jonesing to use the wavebird. |

@ShadowlinkA couple people posted in this thread that they think the controls are excellent, I'm posting my opinion that they're terrible, that's the funny thing about opinions not everyone always agrees. @PogueSquadronOther M was kinda awesome IMO, it wasn't perfect (I personally didn't love all the melee stuff), and the story did it's best to ruin Samus as a character, but in general it was highly enjoyable, and it looked cool as hell, it's the closest we've come to seeing world of Metroid Fusion realized in modern polygonal graphics (not to disparage Metroid Prime, it had it's own unique style that really worked for that series). I'd really love to see Team Ninja get another shot, but yeah I also wonder what would happen if Retro made a polygonal 2-D Metroid, applying everything they've learned from working on Donkey Kong. |

deathly_hallows said:@Shadowlink I don't think you understand what an opinion is. Neither do you. "I'm hopeless at the controls and think they are bad" = Opinion "The pointer is a finicky, cumbersome, jittery, awkward mess."= A statement of fact. A fact that is wrong, by any reasonable measure. Stephen disagrees with IR controls too, but I'm fairly certain that's a matter of preference, not because the controls are perceived to be utterly broken. If you keep trying to tell us the controls are actually factually broken, I'm going to have to keep telling you that you're wrong @PogueSquadronI can see why people would have issues with the controls in KIU though, some people can push past those issues, some can't. That's fine. But the issues DH describes for the Prime controls are so utterly alien to me It'd be like someone saying "These new flat screen HD TV's suck, they're too bright! I can't see a thing!"- And then using that as an argument as to why CRT's are superior. (A statement that is clearly nutty ) ...Then it turns out the TV settings were turned up so far, the picture was a complete whiteout . @VofEscaflowneDH just has to accept that he's bad at controls and all will be fine . He gets stomped on in Destiny with DA too, so that's not much help . |

Well I just played through the first 20 minutes of Prime, and.... you know the controls feel better to me than they did when I played Prime 3, is the game using WM+, or does simply having WM+ add some kind of basic stability improvements across the board for all games? Or maybe Retro just tweaked the controls a little, but the cursor seems a lot more stable and less jittery. I still don't like having to hold the controller perfectly still, I was just reading on Reddit that someone suggested stacking a couple of pillows on your lap and using that to support your arm... I'm like... ugh. No.
Anyway, I still vastly prefer the GCN original, everything about the Wii control scheme, from the way you switch visors to the way you access the maps and menus, just seems awkward. It's so obvious (to me) that the Wiimote was designed for Wii Sports and NES games, not an FPS game, I mean the 1 and 2 buttons are so far down on the control they are practically impossible to reach without contorting your thumb in an almost painful way.
So I'm probably not going to play through MP1 and 2, but I might play through 3 again, it's the only Metroid game I've only played once so I'd like to give it another try. Maybe I'll play through 1 on GCN using my old Wii, the game is pretty fantastic, just seeing the beautiful graphics and hearing that gorgeous music makes me want to dive back into that world. Damn it is so good, so immersive, I don't think there has ever been a game that's surpassed it in terms of atmosphere, it's a true masterpiece. |
