Just curious if anyone else picked up this set? It only being $10 for the first week is a crazy good deal. I still have the physical version, but couldn't pass this up.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Yeah, one of the first things I checked was the read/write speeds. After doing some searches it looks like the read speed of the WiiU disk drive is around 22 Mbs per second. That's not an official timing so who knows. Many USB 2.0 thumbs can read at that speed but writing is slower. I'd expect more reading than writing. The mention that USB thumb drive fail over time when used too much scares me. I guess I'll use my $50 gift card to Best Buy for an external HDD...

@Abdooooo
I might not be entirely accurate with my info, so take it with a grain of salt. It's just how I've had the matter explained to me before.

MP is still pretty amazing. The attention to detail really holds up. I'm iffier on the controls than I remember being with Prime 3. Just so used to dial analog at this point. I think what throws me off is just that you always are moving the remote. You can never really rest with it I think. It makes some aspects of this game harder because it does complicate the lock on mechanic a bit.

Was there ever any explanation as to why some graphical effects from the first Prime were not included in Trilogy? I don't think her arm cannon smokes anymore, does it?

@PogueSquadron

Are you talking about having to point at the screen with the wiimote as opposed to there being a default straight ahead look in other FPSs? I generally play at the right side of my couch. I use the arm rest pretty much at all times so my wrist does all the work and my arm doesn't get tired. My only real problem with Trilogy's controls is the fact that you have to switch beams quite often. It gets really annoying especially towards the end of the game.

They had to do certain tricks with the Gamecube to get those effects and I don't believe they could get them to work on the Wii's insides.

I had to move the controls to Advanced, because it felt way to slow in Normal, and I remapped Jump to A / Shoot to B because it felt backwards the other way.

@PogueSquadron The explanation for Prime 1's arm cannon effects is that they were 2D sprites, and with the increased range of arm cannon movement afforded by the Wiimote controls, the effects no longer looked correct. They would have had to remake the effects in 3D which I guess was too much work. Prime 2 and 3 still have their arm cannon effects as they were 3D models.

The explanation for other little effects here and there being trimmed out is that they needed the memory to add in things like the Wiimote controls, widescreen presentation, and the new way the extras system works.

@r_hjort I think it's funny how Nintendo doesn't recommend flash drives when the internal memory in the system is also flash. So yeah, as long as you have one with a good enough read/write speed then it should be no less durable than the internal memory.

I think I will buy this (on sale), even though I own the disc already, for a few reasons:

1) Three amazing games for an absurdly low price
2) No need to swap in the disc anymore
3) Having the icon on my home menu means I will be more likely to play the game
4) This may show Nintendo that there remains Metroid interest in the community
5) This may show Nintendo that there is interest in more Wii games coming to the Wii U

Despite starting Metroid Prime on Gamecube multiple times, I was never able to finish it. I quickly grew tired of the controls. The Trilogy opened my eyes to the Prime games, providing a more immersive, fun and intuitive control method. I'll especially be excited to replay Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, on Veteran difficulty this time.

Not necessarily, since there are different types of flash memory of varying quality.

EDIT: It also seems that the format Nintendo forces for the Wii U's external storage was created with traditional harddrives in mind, and screws with the flash memory type units' wear leveling.

@r_hjort Sure, but that's also true of hard disk drives, yet they don't make any note about not using them.

Well, you said that a USB flash memory should be no less durable than the internal flash memory, which I thought seemed like a flawed assumption considering the possibilities. I also edited in a sentence in my previous post about the USB stuff, btw.
01/30/15, 22:17
@r_hjort If it's the same quality flash as the system uses then it would be no less durable, that's what I was saying. But if that's true that Nintendo uses some weird formatting for external devices and not the same as the internal memory uses, that's pretty strange, though I guess that's Nintendo's MO. In any case though, hard disk drives are more durable from wear than flash devices anyway so they're a better choice when possible.

I would guess that Nintendo uses a similar Nintendo brand formatting (well, a compatible one at least ) for the external devices as their own internal memory, but the problem is supposed to be that the USB flash devices you buy have a different formatting, and that their wear leveling will stop working when your Wii U gives them their new format, making them less durable/reliable than normal.

But yeah, I agree that HDD would be preferable to flash, and I'm not very happy that Nintendo went with the latter. Wouldn't be surprised if the flash memory durability has something to do with my old Wii's system getting corrupted.

EDIT: Sorry if I'm repeating myself, misunderstanding you or typing nonsense; I'm really sleepy for some reason.

Not to totally derail the thread with more hard drive discussion, but would a solid-state eliminate the problems with the hard drive wearing out?

I only ever played Prime on my Dolphin (Game Cube Emulator) and it sucked, now playing it on a real console its much more fun. As sad as it is I only ever played and finished Other M so my opinion of this game is going to be interesting.

@Secret_Tunneli think Nintendo's official documentation says that they don't recommend SSD's, but I'm not sure if users have had problems with them.

Setting it to Advanced was the first thing I did when I booted this game up. And after playing for about 3 seconds swapping A and B came right after.

I might try switching A and B but I think I kept it at default with Corruption. Shooting just reminds me too much of mashing that giant A Button on the Gamecube.

I also think it might be more comfortable for those bullet spongey bosses. Prime 3's bosses on Hypermode took a ton of hits to go down.

Gosh I'm so torn about this, Metroid Prime is one of my favorite games of all time, but I hate using the pointer for aiming because it's a finicky, cumbersome, jittery, awkward mess. If only these games supported the classic controller, or if they would just release the CGN versions. Ugh.

Heading down to the Magmoor Caverns...

When I played this game in 2003 I was scanning as little as possible, barely checking my map, finding minimal secrets... jeez, just running around like an amateur hoping for the best.

Different ball game in 2015. Absolutely relishing this. Best £9 I ever spent.
