Bayonetta 2 Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Bayonetta 2 on the Wii U
9.09/10 from 14 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Bayonetta 2 on the Wii U!

I was going back and forth on whether to get this on disc or digitally. And then I looked up the size of the games. I pulled this from NintendoEverything.com.

"Bayonetta 2 requires 14.6GB if you plan on picking up the digital version. And together, Bayonetta 1 and Bayonetta 2 take up 32.2GB of space."

I have yet to get a hard drive for my Wii U and I want both games so I had to go with the physical version.

What is everyone else going with? There's quite an interesting setup for the digital versions. I can't seem to find confirmation right now, but from what I've heard the digital version of Bayonetta 2 is $50. And you can then get the first Bayonetta for $10. Conversely you can buy B1 for $30 and then get B2 for $30. If this is true then the digital version of Bayonetta 2 is a better price than at retail.

*Edit: I think I found the digital price confirmation (for Europe at least). Found here.

I picked up my copy at Target on Friday (last copy for me, too - display, actually). I played it for the first time last night (starting with Bayonetta) and am really enjoying it. Some of the big boss battles drag on, and Enzo annoys me, but otherwise I'm having good fun with it.

Got my copy in today. I played the first mission (basically the demo). I can't to get to some new content.

It's pretty amazing how Bayonetta 2 really ups the speed and frantic pace of battles.

Also, it was nice to see such a colourful opening to the game, with Christmastime in the city.

This game is FUN.

Yeah I definitely love the game. I finished it today and really want to go again. The couple of things I'd be interested in unlocking seem like a big grind though. Or I'd have to play through on the 3rd difficulty level. And I tend to become very upset when I play difficult games.

@gojira

If you start back from the beginning, you'll find a huge difference in how good you are. I started on and beat it on 3rd Climax so I took a lot of beating haha. Lots of practice too! Now going back to the start, Pure Platinums are flying everywhere though managing to get higher than a gold overall is still pretty tough. Still, better than all the stone awards I got!

I think this game is awesome so far. The combat is so fast, punchy, and fun. I haven't tried the other difficulty levels, but normal feels just right. It's challenging enough that it feels rewarding to improve whether that be successfully dodging more often or dishing out longer combos.

The soundtrack is great, too!

So, those of you who've now played both games--would you still recommend playing the first game first? Both story-wise and gameplay-wise?

@Secret_Tunnel
I'm only a couple chapters into Bayonetta 2, but I have to say that part 1 is totally worth the play-through.
The story is ridiculously stupid, but it's nice to know the characters and their relationships before hitting the sequel.
Plus, the higher-octane fights in the sequel will keep things fresh.

@Secret_Tunnel

I'd definitely recommend playing Bayonetta 1 first in terms of gameplay. I've revisiting the first one now that I've beaten the second game and it's clearly inferior. Not that it's a bad game, Platinum has just fixed a good deal of small issues and everything overall is better.

As far as story goes, it's not that big of a deal. I don't want to get into spoilers about the end of Bayonetta 2, but it would be interesting to see the story in that order.

Finally finished my replay of Bayo 1 on Wii U today and started the sequel. I'm about two hours in (finished the Prologue and Chapter 1) and MAN what an improvement over the already great first game! THIS is how you do a sequel!
11/03/14, 07:44
I've been playing this most of the week. I'm pretty far into it (Chapter 13) and it's everything I was hoping for out of a sequel. It's so incredibly fun.

This game noticeably lacks the humor of the first game, but I'd say it's superior to it in everything else. The pacing is better, the combat has been improved, and there's been even more variety on top of what was incredibly varied game design in the first game.

I really had to struggle to put the game down earlier, I've been having such a blast playing it.

@Secret_Tunnel

I absolutely would recommend playing the first game first. Unlike other games with sequels, this one actually calls back to a lot of stuff, and a lot of the mechanics remain the same; learn them in 1, explode all over bad guys in 2.

Did they make Witch Time much easier to trigger in 2? I'm hitting it CONSTANTLY.

Started it Monday night, did a chapter or two. Last night did another. And tonight..holy crap, I think I'm up to Chapter VIII now, haha. Love love LOVE that they show you where to find the Muspelheim (in terms of which Verse #. I WISH Bayonetta had that..)

@TheBigG753

How collecty are you being? I combed Chapter 1 TWICE (read: so 4 hours spent) and I can't find Bird #2. Its driving me CRAZY. I also had a streak of three stages where I missed like 4 straight Muspelheim portals. What in the world.

EDIT- What Accessories did you guys buy first? I went with the Awards Mallet, The Taunty thing, and then I saved up for the 200k Moon Special. I'll have to drop my Taunter off, but yeah.

@Mr_Mustache

I wasn't super collect-y, but I wasn't rushing through the stages either. I was trying to find hidden areas as much as I could.

I definitely got over half of the crows and Muspelheim portals by the end of the game, but I'm surprised I missed as many as I did. Also missed 1+ gold records. Like you, there was one chapter where I missed maybe 3 portals in a row, and I have no idea how!

I'll be replaying the game in its entirety at some point (probably multiple times, it's so damn fun) to find more of the collectibles and buy more stuff.

As far as accessories go, I didn't buy any until near the end of the game (I think I purchased the first one, where witch time is triggered every time you get hit). I spent most of my money on getting new techniques.

I think you are right about witch time being triggered easier, though it seems that the game as a whole is a little bit easier than Bayo 1. That, or I'm better at it today than I was then, haha. As fun as the first game was, Bayo 2 takes it to a whole different level. I'm not sure I've ever had more fun kicking ass as I have in this game. The first three or four missions, I got mostly bronze and stone awards as I got back into the swing of the gameplay, but was almost all golds and silvers after that.

@Mr_Mustache

Witch Time is definitely easier to pull off in Bayonetta 2. Imagine my struggle going back to one after playing through 2. It feels like the game is broken because your brain is used to the larger window to pull it off.

@gojira

I think Bat Within is pretty much MANDATORY, especially if you're going back to One. I was talking to Lou on the phone earlier, and pretty much suggested that as the first thing you should buy. Whoever clued me into it for Original Bayonetta, good job.

@TheBigG753

A whole record? Now, dig this, hombre.. I missed THREE in Bayonetta, and I'm wondering if you can only get those on Hard, Very Hard? I was pretty darn thorough (found well over half the Witch Graves there), though Alfheim avoided me like the plague (and STUPID hard, too). Here I'm doing better, but I wish there were some %'s on how much progress you're making. I'm gonna redo my horrible Muspelheim chapter and see what went wrong. I can't have been THAT bad.

Still looking for Bird #2.. Where the heck IS that thing?!

The Auto Witch Time deal, I dunno..it feels cheapy to me. I think I misunderstood the Infernal Communicator and the Butterfly Shield deals from the first game. Not sure what I was expecting, but the Try It thing seems pretty neat for those.

The worst trophy I've got in Bayonetta 2 (I'm playing on 2nd Climax) so far is a Silver (due in part to zero deaths so far, and zero health items being used; if you get that Mallet of Rewards, if you kill a guy with a Torture Attack, he drops TONS of halos and enough auto-health stuff to get you back to full, pretty much. Look into it!). I managed to get a Platinum on one stage. Imagine my surprise! Pure Platinum awards are awesome when Bayonetta talks to you. Oh, you naughty boy. Tee hee!

Not sure if I'll get back in tonight. I might.. Tough to eat just one.
11/20/14, 06:52
Lou and I played some Tag Climax tonight. Man, it was BRUTAL. By BRUTAL I mean CHALLENGING!

I'm so used to dropping dudes and taking their health stuff to keep me way up in the green. Not so over there. The way they do it though, you're cooperative but you're still competing? Whoever does the most damage Wins, and then gets the larger share of the Winner's Purse.

I got TONS of bonus dough from just 2 cycles w/ Lou, that I was able to spend at my leisure back at the shop.

..

So I spent 300K on new outfits. Star Fox costume is AWESOME, and I was curious about the 1st Mirror thing so I got that, saw that there was other stuff available, and without hesitation bought the Schoolgirl one.

Good Lord.

Beat this game last night. A tremendous overall improvement over the first one in all facets! The music is top notch, the controls were smooth and excellent, the story was engaging, and the environments were fun to explore.

Some negatives were the camera. Sometimes it was hard to control on my own. Also, like Rob said, the online was very hard. It's a good way to get some quick cash though. I think it took us a bit to understand that the more money you spent on a round, the more difficult the round would be. The ability to revive is a nice touch too. Hopefully next time they make some local coop or online coop missions.

I would say skip the first game and play this one, but you wouldn't understand the story much. I will try and go back to find records and books and crows, and unlock some of the costumes too.

Just started up the 2nd game after kind of giving up on the 1st one. It feels like an overall improvement in feel and pace. I can't put my finger on it but something was keeping me from being overly eager to keep playing the 1st one after about 6 or so hours of play.

Did anybody miss a book in the middle? I can't remember exactly where the one I'm missing is (in terms of "on the list"), but I remember FREAKING OUT in the 1st game, and then it magically popped in later when I found it in one of the later stages. Not sure why they'd stagger the list for ONE book, but I'm feeling as though it isn't going to be the case here. It might be after the "Bridge to the Heavens" one? I can't remember..

@TheOldManFromZelda

Holy cow! Why didn't you tell me of your progress? I've been pussy-footin' along waiting for you to catch up!

I think I'm on XIV?

And I figured out that the more money you wagered, the tougher it was...what I DIDN'T understand was "Just how much harder" each bet is. Some of those seemed IMPOSSIBLE, while others were like "is that it?" Congratulations, duuuude!

So I’ve been playing Bayonetta 2 almost non-stop for the past few weeks. I beat the game shortly after we did our Top 5 of the Year episode on RFN, and back when we recorded it, Bayo 2 wasn’t even in my Top 10. But now, I think that at the very least, it should have dislodged Tomodachi Life in 5th place.

There are four main reasons why I’m enjoying the game more now.

The first is that I’m no longer watching the cutscenes, which were mostly garbage. I know some people like them, and like the "humor" of the series, but I can’t stand it. The cutscenes had a few cool moments, but nothing you wouldn’t see in most anime for kids : a few seconds of cool action, prefaced by overly wordy BS posturing.

The second is that the game on 2nd Climax (normal difficulty) was a bit too easy. Much easier than the same setting in the first game. Probably my fault : the game tells you that Hard is suitable for people who played through the first game. I didn’t listen.

Anyway, I’m playing on Hard now, and it makes the game better as I can’t rely on the same combo that got me through Normal. Now I actually have to think about things like "juggling" the enemies, for instance, and that makes for a less button-mashy experience.

Playing on Normal first has its advantages, though : I’ve unlocked a bunch of weapons to toy with.

Third, I’ve unlocked not just new weapons, but tons of Nintendo fanservice as well : all the Nintendo-themed costumes come with cool extras. Some have special moves, others special weapons. The Samus costume gives you the morph ball. The Hero of Time changes halos to rupees, and gives you the classic chime when you open chests. The princess costumes change the "wicked weaves" to Bowser’s fists and feet and turn halos into coins.

And the coolest thing of all : the Starfox costume changes the jet into an Arwing, and kind of turns one level into a Starfox level.

Finally, fourth : the online mode is actually more fun than I’d have thought. The connexion is seemless, and you can very quickly join someone or play with the CPU until someone challenges you. The mode is really just six fights against enemies in small arenas, but the fact that you’re both cooperating (to get through without dying) and competing (for halos) keeps things fun and hectic. It’s a good way to earn halos, too.

On top of all that, I’m going through some stages on Normal again in order to get Gold trophies and unlock more items. So yeah, I’m hooked.

Great game!
