Wow, cross buy for Shovel Knight would be amazing. I'd definitely give the game a third playthrough if I could get it on 3DS without buying it a second time.

I finally started this the other day (via Steam), and am enjoying it. I beat Specter Knight's level, and it was hard! I got daring and destroyed the first three checkpoints, but then I kept dying over and over, and needed to keep replaying the level from the beginning Oh well. I eventually made it, and successfully defeated Specter Knight! I really love this game's design, and charm. The townsfolk in the village are so pleasant to talk to.

I'm on what I believe to be the last level now (probably not though if it follows the Mega Man formula), and it's getting pretty hard, I've died like 20 times, it's hard for me to believe that people didn't enjoy this game because it was "too easy", I feel like it ramps up to be kind of a bitch! Maybe I just suck!

EDIT: just talked to the witch, I've died 142 times so far! not as bad as I thought actually since I've been replaying levels a lot to break the checkpoints and pick-up other feats.

Finally finished the game. May have more to say when I'm not typing on a phone, but I really love the game, wasn't perfect but was very good and I'd live to see a sequel. Ending was neat too, though the end boss was a bit easy (I guess all of the bosses kind of were?)

I really just love the world they created. Sure it was heavily influenced by other games but it still felt unique.

Is there anything worthwhile to do when you finish or should I just wait for DLC?

I'm enjoying the game quite a bit (Steam version), but what it is really doing is making me appreciate just how good Mega Man games are. I mean, the game came out 15+ years ago and you can still make an awesome game by borrowing heavily from them.

Steam version?

@GameDadGrant

Yea, I have it on Steam/PC.

Shows why Mega Man games are so memorable. The big problem with many NES nostalgia games is they think "Nintendo hard" is what made many of those games great. Shovel Knight brought together all things that made a truly great and memorable NES game.

Is the DLC for this game ever coming out?
01/19/15, 16:58
@VofEscaflowne The latest Kickstarter backer email update (just over a month ago) seemed to indicate they were still in the early stages of one of the playable boss DLC campaigns. I don't think anything else has been mentioned in any detail yet, either. At this rate, it's gonna take several years for this game's DLC to trickle out.

Of course, they might just be pushing the promised DLC aside for now to concentrate on the PS3/PS4/Vita ports (and the added content there, like the Kratos fight).

@Jargon

Out of curiosity, why did you choose the Steam version over the Wii U or 3DS?
01/19/15, 19:14
I'm not sure if he Kickstarted it but I think the Steam code was $5 cheaper.
01/19/15, 20:12
@GameDadGrant I too got the Steam version. That version was $10 for Kickstarter backers, while the Wii U and 3DS versions were $15, so that was the major differentiator. Without the price advantage, it would have been a coin-flip between PC and Wii U (which I didn't have at the time anyway). I wouldn't have gone with 3DS because I find the D-pad uncomfortable.

I picked up the Steam version because it wasn't on Wii U at the same time as Steam for me from what I remember anyway. Plus I am on my PC more these days.

@GameDadGrant

Well, I got it as a gift. But I would have gone with Steam anyway because I'll almost certainly able to play it 10 years from now on whatever new PC I'll have whereas I likely won't be able to play it on whatever Nintendo platform. Also I can play it in either on the TV or portably on my laptop. And I can choose from a variety of controllers.

Beat the game! Definitely a good one.

I will say though, for all the praise this game has gotten for wearing its influences on its sleeve, there were several parts of the game where I feel like it crossed the line from homage into ripoff. I mean there's that part that is strikingly similar to one cave section in Super Mario World. To the point where I feel like the exact layout is practically the same. As I said when I first started playing, it really goes to show just how good those classic games are. Hopefully this game inspires people who haven't played them to check them out.

So what's up with the new game plus? How do you start it and what does it entail? Worth playing?
01/31/15, 11:27
@Jargon
That's sorta like saying "insert practically any new rock band" is ripping off The Beatles or The Rolling Stones.

No creative work can be 100% new and original, and if it was it probably wouldn't be any good. All of human civilization is built by standing on the shoulders of giants.

@deathly_hallows

Sometimes bands do rip off the Beatles and the Stones. Like I said, there's a line. Often this game crosses it, in my opinion. On the other hand there's plenty of games inspired by Mega Man and Mario that don't have sequences that feel exactly like moments from its predecessors.

The New Game + lets you keep all your upgrades while you start the game over from the beginning. Though this time around, there are far fewer health recovery items in the stages, and even fewer checkpoints. I can't tell if the enemies are any tougher or not, but it doesn't appear so.

There is a "Feat" that is unlocked when you beat the game twice, but how much that matters is up to the player.

Just finished the Treasure Knight stage and I'm not sure how to feel about it.
I seem to experience an equal amount of frustration as I do enjoyment - I wish there was a way to properly save progress in a stage. I think I struggle to come back to the game when I don't have a dedicated block of time to play.
