The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D Discussion (Nintendo 3DS) [game]

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D on the 3DS
9.57/10 from 9 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D on the 3DS!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Some things in life are inevitable. Death. Taxes. The moon falling from the sky and obliterating the world. And of course, remakes of popular video games.

With the recent announcement of Majora's Mask 3D, Nintendo manages to cover the entire list. (Unless your video game prices don't include sales tax, in which case, lucky you.)

Thankfully, it seems that this will be no lazy remake. According to a recent interview with Eiji Aonuma, work on Majora's Mask 3D began in June 2011 shortly after development on Ocarina of Time 3D wrapped up.

With any luck, this means we'll be getting Majora's Mask 'Master Quest'. Feel free to post any new info in this thread as it comes to light.

They could have added more statues and kept the old save mechanics and it still would be handheld friendly. All they have done is dumb the mechanics down.

I thought they did add more statues.

The problem with temp saves is that they're a bit fickle and can sometimes be lost, so maybe that's why they didn't want to use them.

They did add more statues, but that is really all they needed to do to the saving.
I've never had a problem with temp saves outside of game crashes and that is generally how it goes for most people I imagine.

I had an issue one time when I ragereset my N64 in disgust at something, and then realised I'd lost something else I'd accomplished earlier in the timeline. But that was my own stupid fault

But, like I said way back on the first page, there's a better way of dealing with the 'Lost save' problem:

Shadowlink said:

The ability to 'soft save' anywhere rather than at statues would be an ok addition. Or even better, have an autosave feature that triggers & overwrites the previous save every time you do something significant/enter a new area. That way you can't savescum within a single timeline. AND it protects people from losing hours of progress because they lost power (in this case battery power) before they saved or their game glitched out forcing a reset- Both issues with the first release.

That has to be the best option, surely. The chosen option just panders to the savescummers.

This remake seems to be intended for new players rather than the hardcore fans, and so I think that's why they're making it easier to play. If the fans don't like this (mostly optional) new stuff, they can just play the original game. For example, I didn't like some of the changes in the remake of Final Fantasy 1, so instead of complaining about it I just went back to the original. Seems simple enough to me.

@Mop it up

This isn't just an optional addition though, it's a fundemental change that alters the game. And unlike say the Super Guide from the newer Mario games, completely unavoidable.

Telling me I have to go play the original instead is a copout. So I'm not allowed to enjoy any of the new stuff like the Fishing holes or whatever unless I put up with a save system thats ripe for abuse now? Come on.

So the Ocarina of Time save is gone? Or they just "expanded" the Owl Statue feature?

I really am not sure how the "expanded" Owl Statues benefit anyone. It's nowhere near what people were asking for...and if they took out the other save method...dumb.

@missypissy

More Owl statues, but now the statues function as a permanent save point. Resetting the timeline doesn't save at all.

@Shadowlink
What...in the literal fuck is this...
01/16/15, 00:14
Oh, I didn't know that resetting the timeline didn't save anymore. Yeah, that is a weird change, and means you can't play it like the original anymore if you ignore the owl statues, since you can't ignore them. Nintendo sure are weird with this game with both the original and remake!

@Jargon

Haha.

I think it's probably a better change but they shouldn't have taken out the old mechanics completely. Especially when it is a remake rather than a successor.
01/16/15, 01:44
Yeah, the best idea would probably had been to include two "modes" to the game, and have a "classic" mode for the purists where the game plays out like the N64 game.

@Jargon

Yeah. Like winning free tickets to a Justin Bieber concert.

Congrats .

@Jargon

...Tickets to a bigger Justin Bieber concert?

I have a sneaking suspicion they might put the old save mode in Master Quest or something or indeed have it as a separate option. I hope my suspicion is right.

Also the new Save System does kinda ruining some of the themeing and mood.

So the IGN video mentions something that I haven't seen talked about yet. The Song of Double Time lets you choose which time you want to jump to instead of it just being half day increments.

@Stephen
Yeah that's a really good change that got overshadowed by the really bad change. Definately a good change for them to make. Some of those sidequests will be a lot less frustrating.

Just cleared Woodfall Temple. They really did change Odolwa up!

Is it just me or does the changed fairy placement make things easier? I didn't have to hunt at all.

There used to be one hiding in the water in the block room on the left side of the map. Now you have a pile just scattered in open bubbles. Bleah.
