Amiibos! How do you feel about the phenomenon? [roundtable]

Since the other thread seems like it's mostly about procurement. I'm curious as to how all of my NW chums have been affected by the Amiibo craze. I think it's kind of insane that releasing a steady string of amazing games only marginally helped Nintendo's position, but releasing a bunch of practical figures of questionable utility has made such a splash. (I say "questionable utility", but I personally enjoy the Amiibo integration into Smash Bros. I think it's innovative and cool.) That said, I can't deny feeling the hunger myself.

Anyway, I'll ask a couple of questions. Feel free to answer as many as you wishhh...

1) How many Amiibos did you originally think you were going to buy?

2) How many Amiibos do you have so far?

3) How many of them are still in the box?

4) Have you felt the hunger?

5) How far have you gone to obtain one? (ex. highest price paid, most finagling, import, pre-order, etc.)

6) How do you feel about the Amiibo product, overall? Cool toy? Real-life Pokemon metagame? Crass and exploitative?

I'll answer in a while. Unless the thread disappears, in which case I will forget.

1) How many Amiibos did you originally think you were going to buy?
No more then five.

2) How many Amiibos do you have so far?
Five. A couple from each wave.

3) How many of them are still in the box?
Zero. As has been said many times already, I play with my toys.

4) Have you felt the hunger?
A bit, but mostly for certain figures.

5) How far have you gone to obtain one? (ex. highest price paid, most finagling, import, pre-order, etc.)
Not very far. I've paid no more then retail price and I can't see changing that.

6) How do you feel about the Amiibo product, overall? Cool toy? Real-life Pokemon metagame? Crass and exploitative?
They seem to be a neat addition to Smash Bros. adding another layer of game play. That being said, I mostly enjoy seeing lesser known characters getting a little love in the form of a collectible. Getting things with Mario or Luigi's face on it is easy, but Captain Falcon? That's just amazing IMHO.

8

All 8 out of 8

4) Have you felt the hunger?
No.

5) How far have you gone to obtain one? (ex. highest price paid, most finagling, import, pre-order, etc.)
I bought them on-line, so not very far and at base value.

I honestly don't care about the interactivity at all. I wasn't that interested in Disney Infinity either at first, but I changed my mind after trying the game out and then bought a bunch of adventure packs and figures because I thought the concept was cool and the quality of the toys was good too. I really wish that Nintendo would do more with these figures, like Disney Infinity maybe. A sandbox mushroom kingdom where you could play co-op and design levels like Disney Infinity would be nice. The Nintendo toys look really neat and detailed, especially Samus! I don't feel pressured to buy them in order to play any game. I can take it or leave it, and I'm really curious to see what creative 'possibilities' can come from this tech feature besides printing money for Nintendo.

Just wanted to take an opportunity to welcome both Beardednerd and GameBoyGoul. Nice to see some new faces!

@kriswright Yeah!

...where did you both come from?!
01/14/15, 05:05
@Zero

I was lucky enough to meet BeardedNerd through Ploot recently. Hell, I've played Smash Bros with him and you and I haven't even played Smash Bros!

I blame game development for everything I neglect in my life.

@Beardednerd
Oh, hey! Excellent.

@GameBoyGoul
Welcome!

All of them

Not applicable

I think the figures themselves are awesome. I think how they interact with games has been pretty cool so far, but Mario Party 10 has me worried for the future. It has an entire mode locked behind Amiibo figures.

I was incredibly, INCREDIBLY excited for Amiibo before it launched, but after launch day, that excitement turned to frustration, then anger, then sadness, then I finally accepted that these figures aren't worth it for my sanity. If I could easily find the majority of the figures at a decent price, I would own them all and I'd probably even be ok with paying a bit extra for some of the rarer characters. But since I cannot, I have decided to skip them entirely. If Nintendo decides to make them easier to come by in the future, maybe I'll reconsider, but as of now, the whole thing has been a pretty big disappointment for me.

Yeah, honestly, today was kind of a dark day for Amiibos. Nintendo's locking quite a bit of game content behind them now. Hopefully, it's just ancillary stuff, but wtfffff. And it was exciting to hear that different versions of the same characters would work across different games. UNTIL they said you'd have to erase your Smash Bros. data to use the same Amiibo in Mario Party 10. WTFFFFF squared.

When I heard about the tiny capacity of the onboard memory in each Amiibo, I thought Nintendo would have some clever system-level process to back up the data to and retrieve the data from the system. Not like this, Nintendo. Not like this.

@Anand

I wonder how much the amiibo inclusive Mario Party 10 will cost. I mean, if the normal game is $50 and the amiibo version is $60, that's not really much savings. Still it does make it more likely that me or someone in my hosuehold own an amiibo at some point.
01/15/15, 02:33
@Anand

Yeah, it's pretty bad. A whole mode is locked out of Mario Party 10. That's terrible.

@Jargon@kriswright
Hmm, my understanding was that you needed Luigi to play the Luigi board, Mario to play the Mario board, and so on. Did they confirm that you could access all of it with just one Amiibo? Because that wouldn't be nearly as bad.

Also, if it's more of an unlock, then why do you have to erase your Smash Bros. data?

How much for the bundle? Maybe it's retailer-exclusive? I can't see it going higher than $10+standard price. Maybe it'll be the same price, but they'll only make ten of them. And they'll go for $10000 each on eBay. With Nintendo getting none of that markup. It's the new hotness!

Thanks for the welcome everyone! I hope that the poor grammar you will see in my posts doesn't offend anyone but Ploot too much.

@Beardednerd
Don't worry. That guy's on thin ice around here, anyway.
01/15/15, 03:11
@Anand

Yea I think that's the case. I really don't like this "amiibos will show up in every game with varying levels of significance" stuff. Just make one amiibo-centric game that I can ignore like Skylanders.
01/15/15, 03:40
@Jargon Just ignore them in all games. I still haven't actually used mine in Smash or Mario Kart.
01/15/15, 04:04
@Zero

Yea, so far that's been easy, but what if this Mario Party mode gets great reviews? That would suck.
01/15/15, 04:07
@Jargon
A Mario Party getting good reviews is one thing that you don't have to worry about.
01/15/15, 05:37
@Jargon That MP mode looked boring as heck, it was a square board. I suppose it could be fun but I doubt it will be that substantial.

I'm more worried about whether they will let everyone move independently like old MP games or not.
