Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker Review (Nintendo Wii U) (9.0)  by

Time for adventure!

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker releases in just a couple of days! Reviews are flowing in. For the moment I'll quote Zero until I can flesh this information out later today or tomorrow.

Review embargo must have lifted, tons of reviews pouring in

Mostly in the 7-9 range. Averaging an 80% exactly between 16 reviews right now. About what I expected. Should be fun.

I think it's about dang time for Toad to get his own game and deeper personality. Captain Toad is so ridiculously adorable that I think he needs his own amiibo too. Sounds like there are a lot of stages to be had with a lot of uniqueness.

I look forward to sharing tips, strategies, thoughts, and scores(?) come Friday the 5th.

I was watching a youtube video showing off some of the shows I used to watch as a kid. Toad now reminds me of Doozers from Fraggle Rock.

Breezed through Episode 1 this afternoon, replaying each stage a couple times to 100% them. It's just as fun and charming as I was hoping for. The standard Toad levels ala 3D World are nice, but I'm also really liking some of the stages that are more standard Mario levels that have been re-tailored for Toad.

Was a little worried when the credits rolled, because I had heard the game was short but I didn't think it was THAT short, haha! I'll probably start the next episode later tonight.

Started this game today, playing alternate levels with my teenage daughter, both really digging it and shouting instructions at each other. Up to level 8 at 100%. Good times.

Tried the first 3D World level but found it a bit dull. Do they improve? Are there many of them?
01/13/15, 00:11
@Super_Conzo Maybe like five or six? They don't get better, but there's not that many of them.

I'm glad to see people giving this game a chance during a relatively slower part of the year. This is a good time to pick up any games you may have missed during the rush of releases and holidays at the end of the year.

Finished all of the non-Bonus content tonight (100% complete through Episode 3).

Things really got legit in the back-half of the final episode. Some of the levels were very tough, especially to be able to complete some of the challenges. The level that I struggled with the most was Ghost Gallery Gambit, and the toughest challenge so far was probably defeating all of the mud troopers on the last train level.

Loved the little cinematic at the end of the game.

Definitely lived up to my expectations for it. It's a ton of fun, and the quality is at the level that you'd expect from a mainline 3D Mario game. Definitely no phoning-in on this one...all of the super creative level designs and puzzles you'd expect from an EAD Tokyo game, it's all there.

The bonus content is up next...

So, for anyone who has 100% completed this...

Is the content after Mummy-Me Maze Forever worth seeing? I don't see myself putting in the time and effort to get the challenge on that one, haha...
01/16/15, 04:32
@TheBigG753 Not really. You've actually seen it before: it's just the three Coins Galore stages.

@nate38

Alright, cool. Then yeah, I'm perfectly okay with stopping at 99%. For me, the bonus content was neat but nothing special (I did like the Toad Brigade levels though). The peak of the game for me came in the second half of the last episode anyways...

@TheBigG753

I thought the ending was wonderful. Maybe a little heavy-handed with the "Too be continued in Super Mario 3D World!" text at the very end, but the way they tied it all in was great. It was like seeing Nick Fury at the end of Iron Man.

My favorite level was the one with the three rotating cylinders, if that rings a bell. I could live in some of those tiny worlds forever.

@Secret_Tunnel

Yep, that was a good one, especially the stuff hidden underneath.

I'd have to go back and look all of them over again to pick my favorite, but the one that stands out at the moment was this one:

I just started playing the game and I'm really enjoying it.

I really agree with what has bee said on the thread up to now. The game is very relaxing with a charming and whimsical feel. I enjoyed the Toad levels from SM3DW, finding them to be a neat little diversion. Taking that concept and expanding it out to this is great.

I would also have to agree that a middle range for the camera would make a huge difference on certain levels. But that feels like a small point against an otherwise well put together game.

I've basically finished this game now...except for Mummy-Me Maze Forever. I read that there are 50 floors, and I want to make a run to finish it sometime in the near future. I got to 18 before I lost yesterday, but I was going about it the wrong way (going for every coin on every floor). I'll make another attempt properly soon.

Other than that, I've finished every stage with all three gems and the bonus objective completed.
02/09/15, 17:00
And we're all done here. Mummy-Me Maze Forever was tough...but once I slowed down and started tapping every enemy (even the Boos because it does slow them down for a split second) it become much easier. My first attempt using this method got me as far as floor 49 (so close). I would then get anywhere from floors 35-45 easily. A few tries later I was successful.

The bottom floor.

Happy Toads.

@ludist210 Oh wow, I totally forgot you could tap enemies to hold them. Still, that seems like it would require a bit more coordination than I can handle, haha.

@ludist210

Congratulations! What did you think of the game? Are you going to give the time trials a go?

@Hero_Of_Hyrule

I got a few time trials, but I don't think I'm going to attempt them all. Getting par times would be tedious.

@nate38

It really wasn't that bad. I only really HAD to tap the Goombas, Fire Piranhas (nifty tip: if you tap them right as they shoot fire, you kill them), and the Boos...and occasionally the Chargin' Chucks if they got too close. Oh yeah, Shy Guys too.

...okay, every enemy except for the Piranha Sprouts, Bullet Bills, Magikoopas, and the Piranha Plants. But still, it wasn't nearly as daunting as I thought it would be.

I just beat Episode 3. Once I get enough coins to earn the achievement in the final Wingo battle, I'll need to tackle the bonus stages.

Does anyone else here feel like while making this game they must have regretted ever calling the actual Birdo 'Birdo'? 'Wingo'? A forced second choice if you ask me...
03/08/15, 16:18
annd... I just 100%'d the game. Took about five tries to get through that final level. Pretty proud. The last five are just like "eff this lets go!" and I just was focused on the right path, not the coins. There was one point where I was in a mosh pit of Charging Chucks and Mummy-mes but somehow I escaped unscathed. Wicked. Nabbed the 5,000 coins at about the 39th floor maybe so I was finally good on that even if I didn't make it (I think?).

Glad to be able to put this one on the shelf.

We bought this for my son's 5th birthday present. We've had it for probably a month, and his birthday isn't until March 30th. Urrrg. Patience, patience.
