Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Every new generation a great dawn emerges where a new game in the acclaimed Super Smash Bros. series graces Nintendo's newest consoles… for the Wii U, that time is almost upon us. Nintendo is truly pulling out all the stops with this one. Here's the breakdown on what we can expect… (Learn more at the Super Smash Bros. website.)

1.) 45+ playable characters (new characters, returning fighters, or accessible via alt costumes)
2.) Releasing November 21st, November 28th, or December 5th depending on your region
3.) Tons of content; from trophies to levels to music tracks to items to pokemon to modes… it seemingly never ends!
4.) Customizable Move-sets
5.) Many control setups; Wii U Gamepad, standard Wii U options, Gamecube controllers, even your 3DS!
6.) Online capable (and encouraged)
7.) Check out Nintendo's 50 Things You Should Know about Smash Bros!
8.) Stages exclusive to the Wii U version. Some epic stages!
9.) Amiibo Support for all existing Amiibos
10.) Gameplay lands somewhere between Melee and Brawl

As you can see, there really is something for everyone, perhaps more than ever before. As I wrote this whole post up, I was listening to the Super Smash Bros. Brawl soundtrack and remembering the hours and days and weeks and months of fun I've had with that game. This will be no different and really will shake the Wii U community up in the best ways. Nintendo is on the eve of quite possible the most acclaimed game the console will have. This is a very exciting moment for Nintendo gamers. Speaking back on the music, you can listen to a bunch of neat samples from the upcoming game at the SmashBros.com Music Page. Be sure to check out Kapp'n's Song! It's a personal favorite of mine. The 3DS version is to have two-songs per stage but the Wii U version is meant to have that and more, even some songs from past games as well.

Please enjoy a few of my favorite images found on the official Super Smash Bros. website.

The release date in North America is November 21st and it was just moved up to November 28th in Europe. For all other regions you can expect December 5th. In the mean time, there's always the 3DS version which looks incredible in it's own right! You can discuss it in Jargon's thread here; Super Smash Bros. 3DS. We should aim to keep this thread focused on the Wii U version so that the 3DS discussion ends up in it's right place. Keep in mind that the Daily Updates are still being provided by Sakurai (for a few more weeks at least) and the best place to find and discuss those is Stephen's Super Smash Bros. News Discussion (Roster Spoilers) Now With Daily Images thread. I do my best to update that daily with the Sakurai posts.

Who is your main? What are you most excited for? Finally, be sure to have your friends added on your Wii U! I'll do my best to keep this thread updated with the various users who are playing this online.

I'm sure this has been pointed out all over the place, maybe even in this very thread, but it just occurred to me that Duck Hunt has a Banjo Kazooie thing going. Could that have been the original idea behind the design?

Perfect Scores on Targets? Man, do tell. I'm STRUGGLING with all 3 Stages.
Four up-smashes with Kirby, then whack the bomb with the hammer against the wall on the first go. Same with the second, but whack it forward with the hammer, not nearly as hard...took me several tries, but it worked.

I've got that Metroid one left too for Smash Tour. Can you still earn these in multiplayer? I might have to cheese them by just turning on three other controllers and having them sit there. I actually do like the idea of Smash Tour, but feel it's better suited for the hardcore Smash player who knows how to use every character, so I'll never play it without online.

@Mr_Mustache Do you have any kind of healing equipment? Sounds like that could help you with the Crazy Hand fight. It'll still heal you even during a stage where you have HP instead of %.

@Zero Huh, did you never do this in Melee? ;)

@ludist210

I'll give that a whirl..

@Mop it up

Yes, you can definitely earn those in multiplayer. I've earned ALL of my Smash Tour awards in multiplayer. (And I, too, can't stand Smash Tour. I feel like a fish out of water with 80% of the characters.)

One little quirk I noticed: if (for other awards) you have Custom ON, but still select a NON CUSTOM CHARACTER, your chance to qualify will be BLOCKED. I have Custom ON by default pretty much (first thing I do), and I went in and picked Wario, did the appropriate level with a non-custom guy, and received no credit. Very disheartening. Tried it again, made sure I didn't touch that thing, and it worked. Careful!

I can / maybe should go back to the KO Healer stuff. My problem, I was focusing on KO'ing the "support" fighters instead of fighting the hands, and before I know it, CRUSHED TO DEATH.

@Mop it up No. Mostly because I had frie... well, relatives who played games back then, so I barely ever played it alone.

Also I didn't have a girlfriend, and calls from the girlfriend are about the only thing that will make me pause in the middle of a Smash Bros. match.

Not sure, but you should totally buy this shirt!

It looks kinda cool, eh?

I'd love an explanation for why there's no Retry option in Event matches. And of course I always forget and think there is and that means I'm taking a screenshot, which makes it even more annoying. Why doesn't it ask if you really want to take a screenshot? I'm sure my SD card is filling up with shitty pictures I don't want.
12/20/14, 02:45
I'd like to know why there's seemingly a different retry button for every mode. Maybe I'm just being crazy though, as I have tried a couple different controllers.
12/20/14, 03:00
@Jargon

You're going to go through it one day and see 300 pictures of you failing different events.
12/20/14, 08:22
@Jargon

I wish there was a retry option too--even if not in the middle of the event, let me try again faster after I fail. NSMBU had the same problem with its challenge mode! How did they not realize that when playtesting? Maybe they've just never played any indie platformer that's come out in the past five years so they don't know any different?
12/20/14, 08:52
@Jargon

I have the exact same issue all-around.

Goddamn I keep getting really close in that Lucina Cruel Smash challenge, but can't quite do it, even using the strategy in that video posted earlier. I can only seem to get up to 7.
12/21/14, 06:05
I'm currently struggling with getting Mario to 20 Crazy Orders. It's been a serious pain in the butt, especially when I get an unlucky match in the teens. I'm pretty sure I've tried it over 10 times already. Once got to 19. Ugh...
12/21/14, 06:59
Ugh, I tried to do Classic on 9 difficulty for the first time and I made it to Master Fortress or whatever and I didn't even know what to do. I thought I'd won when I killed one of those core things and it put me back to the Final Destination platform, but I guess not. Not knowing what to do next, I walked back in and touched something on the floor that killed me. How was I supposed to know anything about that? Blah.

And the truth is, I'm pretty sick of Classic mode having done it already a bunch on the 3DS version, even beating the highest difficulty without losing a life which I know is one of the last challenges in the Wii U version. Yet another reason I wish I had just skipped the 3DS version.
12/21/14, 07:09
I've spent the evening knocking out all the 'For Reward' needs in Solo Events... except for this last one. I've gotten incredibly close to beating The FINAL Final Battle on Hard. I just had to finish the last guy and he was weak. I am playing as a Brawler-Custom Lucina. She's probably going to work out well in the end so it's just a matter of persistence and some luck.

Anyone else this close to completing this challenge or already has gotten all the event bonuses?
12/21/14, 07:20
@TriforceBun

Jesus, that's one of the Challenges!? Those Golden Hammers are so tempting...but then that just takes away the fun, and the great sense of accomplishment if you are able to beat a super hard challenge.
12/21/14, 12:27
@DrFinkelstein

This morning I tweaked my Bruiser/Brawler Lucina and completed the task. Mario is a slick little one but in the end he felled to my sword!
12/21/14, 15:47
@DrFinkelstein

I got them all. Co-op events are a different story.

I'm at about 115/140 challenges completed, with a lot of the ones left being a grind (beat classic on 7.0 with all characters, collect all of the Mii Costumes) or too frustrating to be worthwhile (Beat classic on 9.0 with a stock of 1, defeat your rival 4 times in Multiman vs). I could go off on a huge rant about how infuriating the final boss of Classic is. He's a huge difficulty spike compared to the rest of classic, he has way too many forms, most of his attacks feel cheap, he's not even an accurate test of the skills you've been honing for the rest of the game. Somehow I beat classic on 9.0 with a default Yoshi. I usually end up attempting these challenges, getting frustrated, and walking away from the game unhappy, which is really stupid when I think about it. I can play as 50 different characters and here I am forcing myself to spend 4 hours in an attempt to get 8 trophy rush fevers with Doctor Mario. A majority of the challenges have been fun, but these final 35 or so are just unpleasant.

I guess this is a case where my completionist tendencies get the better of me. I hate leaving games 90% completed, even if I resent going for that last 10%. I'm not even sure why I do this. I love Smash Bros, but here I am forcing myself to play it in a way that I hate.

@DrFinkelstein

I did all of the Event Challenges, w/ Rewards a week or two ago. Good job on persevering!

@Hero_Of_Hyrule

Hesitant to REALLY read your post in depth, but I just saw the "beat it with everyone on 7.0," so I guess I better get going. Just doing it isn't enough it seems. ..Annnnnd I read it all anyway. I think I have 114 or 117, somewhere in there complete, so we're pretty much in the same boat. And I feel a lot of the way you do, too.
12/21/14, 20:07
@Jargon Because many "AAA" developers, especially Nintendo, still haven't figured out that gamers don't want to waste time getting back to playing games.

Did I tell everyone about how I was once curious and decided to time how long it takes to get from death to playing again in BIT.TRIP RUNNER versus New Super Mario Bros. U? RUNNER was about 2-3 seconds, depending on how far into the stage you got. NSMBU was about 17 seconds.

17 freaking seconds. Why?
