Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Every new generation a great dawn emerges where a new game in the acclaimed Super Smash Bros. series graces Nintendo's newest consoles… for the Wii U, that time is almost upon us. Nintendo is truly pulling out all the stops with this one. Here's the breakdown on what we can expect… (Learn more at the Super Smash Bros. website.)

1.) 45+ playable characters (new characters, returning fighters, or accessible via alt costumes)
2.) Releasing November 21st, November 28th, or December 5th depending on your region
3.) Tons of content; from trophies to levels to music tracks to items to pokemon to modes… it seemingly never ends!
4.) Customizable Move-sets
5.) Many control setups; Wii U Gamepad, standard Wii U options, Gamecube controllers, even your 3DS!
6.) Online capable (and encouraged)
7.) Check out Nintendo's 50 Things You Should Know about Smash Bros!
8.) Stages exclusive to the Wii U version. Some epic stages!
9.) Amiibo Support for all existing Amiibos
10.) Gameplay lands somewhere between Melee and Brawl

As you can see, there really is something for everyone, perhaps more than ever before. As I wrote this whole post up, I was listening to the Super Smash Bros. Brawl soundtrack and remembering the hours and days and weeks and months of fun I've had with that game. This will be no different and really will shake the Wii U community up in the best ways. Nintendo is on the eve of quite possible the most acclaimed game the console will have. This is a very exciting moment for Nintendo gamers. Speaking back on the music, you can listen to a bunch of neat samples from the upcoming game at the SmashBros.com Music Page. Be sure to check out Kapp'n's Song! It's a personal favorite of mine. The 3DS version is to have two-songs per stage but the Wii U version is meant to have that and more, even some songs from past games as well.

Please enjoy a few of my favorite images found on the official Super Smash Bros. website.

The release date in North America is November 21st and it was just moved up to November 28th in Europe. For all other regions you can expect December 5th. In the mean time, there's always the 3DS version which looks incredible in it's own right! You can discuss it in Jargon's thread here; Super Smash Bros. 3DS. We should aim to keep this thread focused on the Wii U version so that the 3DS discussion ends up in it's right place. Keep in mind that the Daily Updates are still being provided by Sakurai (for a few more weeks at least) and the best place to find and discuss those is Stephen's Super Smash Bros. News Discussion (Roster Spoilers) Now With Daily Images thread. I do my best to update that daily with the Sakurai posts.

Who is your main? What are you most excited for? Finally, be sure to have your friends added on your Wii U! I'll do my best to keep this thread updated with the various users who are playing this online.

Steph and I just spent some time working on a dodgeball variation in Smash. Calling it Dodgebomb. It almost works, but you've really got to set the rules up right.

Tell us more!

There are some challenges, but I'd like to see if I can get it to work with a 4 player game.

First, the map is simple. It's a platform, but in the middle you need a dividing line with lava on it, since in dodgeball you can't cross into the opposing teams territory. (In school we played variations on this, where you could move 3/4s of the field, but not deep into the opposing teams territory. I toyed with this, but the problem is that the temptation will be too high to actually fight at that point.)

In Special Smash, turn on 300%, so we get instant kills.

Then the Item Switch... this is where it's a little problematic. In a perfect world, we could set Mr. Saturns to go farther and eject a player at 300%. Unfortunately they don't. So we were playing with a combination of bombs, shells, deku seeds, pitfall seeds and Mr. Saturns, all set to populate on high. There's a problem, though. For some reason, even set on high, you mostly get Saturns, bombs and pitfall seeds. In multiple games we got almost no shells or deku seeds, which would be pretty fun in this game, I think. I'm not sure why that happened as they were clearly turned on and did appear like once a match.

Also, of course, you gotta have a no blocking/counter rule.

The only other issue is that it takes a while, even at high settings, for the items to populate. So the first 30 seconds are probably going to be spent taunting each other.

Still, I think there's potential if I look into it a bit more. A 2 on 2 match would probably be more fun, I feel. I can see the pitfall seeds being used in tandem with a second player's shell attack in interesting ways. And I may be ignoring a setting here or there or an item that could pull the whole thing together. So I haven't given up on it, yet.

@kriswright

That does sound fun. If you used characters with projectiles, that could fix some of the item problems.
12/15/14, 20:17
@kriswright

Its too bad you can't throw bombs into barrel cannons to have them shoot. More items/options at our disposal would have been a good thing. I'm not complaining but it could have opened the flood gates with Smash mods.

Reminds me of making up different games in Worms 2. The level editor had a bunch of options and on top of that you could download a small executable that would make the editor even more in depth. Games like Forts, Wormsketball, and roping obstacle courses were just a few that were made.

Don't expect any more character balance patches, unless some game-breaking exploit is discovered. So sayeth Sakurai.

@nate38

Hmm it's almost as if he just wants to be done with the game and move on. He can do that, but why not elect someone else to head the team while he moves onto his next project?

Why is Palutena so awful?

Her model is easily the worst in the game as well. I call filler.

I also can't find too much to like about WFT either.

Ness is the worst of the good/ok characters I think.

@carlosrox
Have you played people who have grasped these characters? Maybe you can't do it, but it can definitely be done.
Also, what's wrong with Palutena's model?
12/16/14, 00:34
Palutena's hard to get used to but she's not that bad.
12/16/14, 00:40
@carlosrox

Palutena is deadly. Her counter is as effective as Marth's & Lucina's. Plus her barrier is useful in getting people out of the way. She's a pretty good all-around for someone that likes sword-types.

I'm not particularly good with Wii Fit Trainer, but I've played against people that can beat me handily using her.

When I run into a Wii Fit Trainer then they usually just spam the sun ball charge move and the soccer ball. And it's usually effective.

I haven't really seen Palutena though.
12/16/14, 00:46
@carlosrox

Get out. Palutena's model is great. I've been using her primarily since the 3DS version and, while I'm still pretty poor, I see a ton of potential as a distance fighter. And I love using my custom Palutena!

Anyway, a character with that diverse of a moveset is a thing but filler. I will Angelic Missle your sorry smash!

@ploot
I grasp all but a few, really. I love using all characters. I'll practice her some more but I can't find many strengths at the moment. Her down and side smashes seem pretty strong, I'll give her that.

@ludist210
Is there some trick to her heal and ball move that make them not so useless? She has really short reach but apparently makes it up with her ability to hit behind her and from odd angles. I only really like her Sun Salutation.
12/16/14, 00:47
@carlosrox

I'll gladly fight you with Ness and WFT! They're two of my mains!

Deep Breathing doesn't just heal, it increases her power and knockback. Header (the ball) is great for chasing people offstage, using it offstage to discourage edge-guarders, and for hitting targets at a distance. Mash the button twice in a row to hit a straighter ball towards the opponent.

You learn something new every day. Huh. I'll need to try that...but I do like the idea of WFT. I'm just no good with her.

Palutena (vanilla, non-custom version) is actually a lot more straightforward than I expected. At first I was disappointed, but now I like her for what she is. She's pretty ordinary, but still feels good. Fun aerial style, definitely.

I'm not as into Wii Fit Trainer, though she's probably my least-used character so far. Maybe I just haven't figured her out yet.

Ness though, Ness seems like one of the best characters of all to me. Except that his recovery is so easy to gimp. Which, you know, holds him back tremendously...

Wii Fit Trainer shits me right off. I was doing that event against the 7 newcomers, and every time I went to smash her with Link's dash attack, she'd pull some yoga shit with her leg thrust up behind her shoulder, and then kick me in the face. Every goddamn time. Never saw it coming.

Ness, like Kirby with Stone, is much more dangerous in 3 or more player because he can catch people off guard with his PK Thunder self projectile move. But he's still formidable 1 on 1 in the right hands.

Is there a point to letting Wii Fit Trainer's soccer ball fall without kicking it else than to confuse the opponent?

Haha

@nate38

I was so PUMPED when I got my Ike challenge..because it hadn't even been revealed yet! BONUS. I'm up in the top 2 rows now though, so who the heck knows what awaits me! I'm more eager to do the 300000 challenge simply so more spots can be revealed. That should give me 3 brand new spots to look at (and panic from).

Got up to 6 last night. I'm doing pretty much everything you're saying. I've been doing it "like a tube of toothpaste," hitting from the bottom, Up+B putting OUTWARD towards the edge of the stage, and sometimes those guys near the edge will get knocked off and can't recover. I'm horrible at the grab+throw. Like, "help." I don't know what to do. Sometimes I go to grab them and next thing I know the round is over and I've failed.

I leave that to go to 9.0 No Custom Classic w/ Ike, and get dumped fighting the boss men.
Still plugging away on the Mario 20 Crazy Order, haven't been to the end in a few days though. Am I losing a step?

Thats pretty much what my last few nights have been like: failure bookended by failure.
