General amiibo Discussion Thread

amiibo is certainly turning out to be a big thing in Nintendo's eyes. Whether or not the rewards for utilizing each amiibo is worthy to you, Nintendo plans to implement all sorts of bonuses. It appears right now that every amiibo is meant to do 'something' in each game though games not featuring certain characters may have more limited uses or lesser-valued ones. We've had plenty of threads on here for amiibo and I'm sure that will continue. Still, I wanted to establish a general discussion thread that doesn't have a specific focus or thought. We'll also use this thread for informing the forums about upcoming news regarding new waves of amiibo or new compatibility. Enjoy! Tell us which amiibo you're planning to get! To get the party started, here are the various waves of amiibo on their way, compatibility information from Nintendo's website, and various links to other threads regarding amiibo.

Went out looking again today at another Wal-Mart and the closest Gamestop. Unfortunately didn't find Villager or Marth. :C

However, I did find out that Gamestop had a used copy of Xenoblade Chronicles, I maaay go back there this weekend to pick it up since it's around 100 bucks to buy it online and Gamestop sells it for 50.

It's a pretty quiet and rural place, so I doubt anyone will pick it up before I do.

Link and Fox are now a bit more pricey again on Amazon... a sign? Or perhaps Amazon is just running out of stock and people are hiking prices again to take advantage. Have people seen Fox and Link around?

@DrFinkelstein

I've seen Link and Fox in the wild a lot. I wouldn't worry. They're probably the more popular ones right now.

Nintendo: “We have not discontinued any amiibo”

And yet.. this article both confirms and unconfirms. Apparently an internal Gamestop e-mail shows Marth/Villager/WiiFitTrainer are all no-more. However it then discusses the e-mail someone got from Nintendo Customer Service stating that none are cancelled.

Yay for confusion!,,...

But at least both imply that the ones I'm missing are still going to be sold. But that really sucks for anyone else who needs the fateful three.

This does worry me about Lucario a bit...

Apparently Wave 2 is about to hit any day now but it's split into 2.a and 2.b because of issues supplying some of them.

Diddy Kong, Zelda, and Little Mac are incoming first. Then Captain Falcon, Luigi, and Pit. Good news since Little Mac will be a Christmas gift for my nephew and I didn't want to miss the holiday cut-off. It's looking like I'll be okay on that front.

Aaaand official word again from Nintendo saying that none of the amiibo have been discontinued, just that they'll eventually restock them in the future. Now onto tomorrow's official word of them being permanently discontinued. Seriously, what is this mess? It's ridiculous that they can't get a clear and definitive answer out there.

EDIT: Oh oops, missed a page somehow and beaten to the punch

Do we know if the exclusive characters will be exclusives in Canada?
Like, will Shulk be exclusive to EB Games?

@Kal-El814
Thanks for the release date!
Although, Amazon.ca lists them for the 12th. Hmmmmm.

@VofEscaflowne

Doesn't hurt to reiterate the mess this all is.

@ploot

I think at this point it's just 'whenever they are available' as there is no street date officially. Keep your eyes peeled!

Hey guys, just got word from my friend who works at Target that he has received confirmation that Star Fox, Donkey Kong, and Samus will be the next three Amiibos to be discontinued. Take this as you will but I honestly believe it.

I apologize ahead of time if this isn't thread worthy but I guess this can be taken as a rumor until more confirmations come forward. Pick them up quick!

Not sure how reliable any of that is but figured I'd pass it on regardless.

@Stephen

Wouldn't it be kind of weird to discontinue Fox if Star Fox is coming out next year?
12/11/14, 16:18
@VofEscaflowne

It might be that they plan to expand Star Fox in to its own line with more minor characters receiving figures and redo Fox in to a style that fits that game more than it does Smash Bros.
12/11/14, 16:23
@VofEscaflowne

I would think Nintendo has another fox planned. The bases for these so far all have the smash logo. They will probably release for other games even using the same characters. Maybe it's not certain but it's likely as an option. So perhaps that's why the rumor has some weight to it.

Either way I hate how this is all being handled.

@Stephen

Every amiibo display I've seen in any store that has one looks the same; they'll need to clear space to make room for the next waves, but straight up discontinued doesn't seem likely...

@DrFinkelstein

I'd always just assumed they'd release new lines for future games. Every amiibo so far references Smash Bros specifically.

I assumed that was the plan from the get-go. I'm skipping Fox for now regardless, but I would pick one up that was more in-line with the upcoming Star Fox game.

I just bought (well, preordered) my first Amiibo. Shulk.

I loved Xenoblade so it's a nice collectable, plus I'm positive it'll unlock something cool in XCX and I'm afraid they won't be available by the time that comes out. (buy all the Shulks now, get rich 2016!) :p

@Kal-El814

They should discontinue in stores but offer on Nintendo.com for up to 6 months.

I've wondered why Nintendo isn't offering them directly, but this is the same company that doesn't sell retail copies of their games online either...
12/11/14, 19:06
It won't last, but I olo'd.
12/11/14, 20:48
@Kal-El814

What kind of look does one get when buying that from a store?
12/11/14, 21:48
@DrFinkelstein
I'm sure he simply took it out of the box.
12/11/14, 23:39
I pre-ordered Pit, and I about bought Samus today...gah, what is wrong with me?!?
