Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Every new generation a great dawn emerges where a new game in the acclaimed Super Smash Bros. series graces Nintendo's newest consoles… for the Wii U, that time is almost upon us. Nintendo is truly pulling out all the stops with this one. Here's the breakdown on what we can expect… (Learn more at the Super Smash Bros. website.)

1.) 45+ playable characters (new characters, returning fighters, or accessible via alt costumes)
2.) Releasing November 21st, November 28th, or December 5th depending on your region
3.) Tons of content; from trophies to levels to music tracks to items to pokemon to modes… it seemingly never ends!
4.) Customizable Move-sets
5.) Many control setups; Wii U Gamepad, standard Wii U options, Gamecube controllers, even your 3DS!
6.) Online capable (and encouraged)
7.) Check out Nintendo's 50 Things You Should Know about Smash Bros!
8.) Stages exclusive to the Wii U version. Some epic stages!
9.) Amiibo Support for all existing Amiibos
10.) Gameplay lands somewhere between Melee and Brawl

As you can see, there really is something for everyone, perhaps more than ever before. As I wrote this whole post up, I was listening to the Super Smash Bros. Brawl soundtrack and remembering the hours and days and weeks and months of fun I've had with that game. This will be no different and really will shake the Wii U community up in the best ways. Nintendo is on the eve of quite possible the most acclaimed game the console will have. This is a very exciting moment for Nintendo gamers. Speaking back on the music, you can listen to a bunch of neat samples from the upcoming game at the SmashBros.com Music Page. Be sure to check out Kapp'n's Song! It's a personal favorite of mine. The 3DS version is to have two-songs per stage but the Wii U version is meant to have that and more, even some songs from past games as well.

Please enjoy a few of my favorite images found on the official Super Smash Bros. website.

The release date in North America is November 21st and it was just moved up to November 28th in Europe. For all other regions you can expect December 5th. In the mean time, there's always the 3DS version which looks incredible in it's own right! You can discuss it in Jargon's thread here; Super Smash Bros. 3DS. We should aim to keep this thread focused on the Wii U version so that the 3DS discussion ends up in it's right place. Keep in mind that the Daily Updates are still being provided by Sakurai (for a few more weeks at least) and the best place to find and discuss those is Stephen's Super Smash Bros. News Discussion (Roster Spoilers) Now With Daily Images thread. I do my best to update that daily with the Sakurai posts.

Who is your main? What are you most excited for? Finally, be sure to have your friends added on your Wii U! I'll do my best to keep this thread updated with the various users who are playing this online.

Fireball. Fireball. Fireball. Aggggh. I think I won that one, thankfully. Man that was annoying haha. Sorry I had to go. Watching a movie!

Also, definitely not used to fighting Meta Knight. What is that one move where he disappears??

@Shadowlink
According to Vooks EBGames just got new stock in so gonna try them.

@Pokefreak911

Really? How the heck did they do that?

Maybe they were the ones who cleaned Nintendo out

Got a link?

I played an online match with three randoms, and Peach (me) won in Sudden Death against Sheik (also in Sudden Death), Jigglypuff and Kirby. Boom. I looked for other people online, but I just saw Bun playing in For Glory and TheBigG753 playing with other people (I couldn't join the room). Everyone else was playing offline.

I also got a KO in Cruel Smash with Kirby, so I unlocked the Duck Hunt stage (and Duck Hunt along with it). This game, y'all. This. Game. So good. I enjoy it a lot more than the 3DS version. A lot more.

A few of my friends were saying that the true skill of a Smash player can only be determined from their level of play when picking a RANDOM character. On the one hand, I agree, because it shows a full understanding of the game and maximum flexibility. On the other hand, I feel that the balance is so good in Smash 4 that any one character should be able to handle any other character in a given matchup. Therefore, you can measure someone's skill based on their top choice of character.

What say you, Negative World?
12/05/14, 17:29
@anon_mastermind I pick Random about 90% of the time because I enjoy using a good portion of the roster (and because I'm fickle by nature), but I certainly don't think less of anyone who picks the character that gives them the best chance to win. But I'm not all that concerned with someone's "true skill" at Smash.

And though Smash 4 seems pretty well balanced at this early stage of the game, there are definitely still characters who have sigfniciant advantages/disadvantages against certain opponents or in certain situations.

It is pretty GD annoying that we can't simply invite friends to join a game, no matter what mode they're playing in. Why is something like this so difficult?? I hate having to either A.) Post something on here and hope someone sees it or B.) Open a room and sit there for a half an hour hoping someone will join. Their only solution is to "Send a message", which goes to Miiverse, and the only notification there is the blue light on the Gamepad, that you're probably not looking at. I'm practically in love with this game, yet they still do stuff like this. Drives me crazy. It should just be like in Pokemon where you hit the internet button, and someone can send you invites wherever you are.
12/05/14, 20:21
Yeah Kris but what I'm saying is tiers might not even apply to us normal people. I mean does anyone here really think the average player gets an advantage by picking Diddy Kong?

It's like saying an airplane is faster than a car. But if you put me at the controls of an airplane and tell me to go fast, it won't work.
12/05/14, 20:30
@PogueSquadron Agreed, that seems like a huge missed opportunity to me. I see friends playing Solo mode or in For Glory and want to send them an invite, but there's a very good chance they won't bother checking Miiverse to see it. I know I've missed a few invites already.

At the very least, they should have given us something to do in the waiting room. Wailing on Sandbag gets old after about ten seconds.
12/05/14, 20:54
@Zero

I kinda do, depending on the context. But it's not a huge advantage or anything.

All I'm really saying is, regardless of whatever the Tier system supposedly is, some characters are probably easier to play than others. So in the case of fairly evenly matched average players, there could be a slight advantage/disadvantage in a match based on who you pick. To use Brawl as an example, if I pick Metaknight and you pick Ganondorf, then I probably have a slight measurable advantage, even on the low-level that you and I play the game. Doesn't mean I'll win - that's the beauty of the chaos in Smash - but it'd be like a slight handicap in my favor.

But I don't think it's important enough that it should change how we play the game, as I say. I'm going to keep playing my low-tier Palutena no matter what. The idea that I'm going to invest a bunch of time into getting good with Fox just because some guys win tournaments with him is silly.

And, let's face it, the Tier list is mostly there because geeks like collecting stats and making lists of cool things.

In my limited time with For Fun mode, I would say that some of the top-tier characters for players who don't really know what they're doing (a group I, myself, fit snugly into) are Ike and Shulk. These characters have such good reach and powerful attacks, that even someone just flailing around wildly can still get KOs with them.
12/05/14, 21:31
@Mop it up

Ike, Shulk, and Little Mac to a lesser extent (but I haven't seen him online in the Wii U version once yet). The problem with the former two are they are soooo slow (especially Ike). I used to be pretty decent with Ike, but I can't use him for anything in Wii U.
12/05/14, 21:39
@ludist210 I find that speed matters a lot less in four-player battles, where there isn't just one opponent always focused on you. Though, Shulk actually seems pretty fast to me for his power and range, definitely faster than Ike. I always have trouble hitting a Shulk player.

Little Mac has some pretty straight-forward smash attacks, but his specials aren't as immediately useful as Ike and Shulk, and his airs really stink. I haven't seen a good Little Mac in For Fun, but I'm sure they exist in For Glory because he's a beast in the right hands.
12/05/14, 21:48
@ludist210 Ike's slow on the ground, but he's actually gotten a bit of a speed upgrade for his aerial attacks. His back aerial has always been fast (and so, so strong) but it seems even better now. His forward aerial was sped up from Brawl in the 3DS version, and the newest update for 3DS (and thus the Wii U version) actually made it even faster. It's so fast that I whiff with it most of the time because I'm expecting more delay than it actually has. And his neutral aerial is nice and safe, with very little startup, hardly any landing lag, and it wraps all around his body. It's my go-to approach with him. I still really like his up aerial too, not a lot of range but it's got KO power and is relatively safe against falling opponents, and even lasts through the entire aerial dodge window if I'm not mistaken. Really, the only aerial he has that I don't like is his down aerial, which I can never seem to hit with. I don't even know if it's a meteor smash or not. But for all I know, it could be a really good attack in the right hands.

But yeah, it's a shame his ground options are all either short range (up and down tilts) or ponderously slow (side tilt, all smashes) and thus not very useful except as blind swings in the thick of a free for all -- which, like @Mop it up says, is where those moves shine. Even so, Ike's probably my favorite of the many low-tier characters I really enjoy.
12/05/14, 22:06
@Shadowlink
Apparently they are sold out again -_-
I get the feeling I am not getting Smash for a while.
12/06/14, 00:35
@nate38

Yeah, Ike is a monster in the right hands. Those hands just aren't mine. I still like him though.

@Mop it up

Oh I know. I've never used really, really fast characters (like Falco, Captain Falcon, or Sonic) very much for that reason. I really like Mega Man and Peach, even though neither are know for their speed.
12/06/14, 00:37
Speed can be pretty important in four player matches for getting items. And things like Pokemon and Assist Trophies can really change a four player match quickly.
12/06/14, 01:19
I've been having a tough time with Shulk. His speed is starting to show a bit, and it feels like he just gets rolled by any kind of projectile.

I played it by myself, and it took half the game before I got the idea of what was going on. I actually enjoyed it. Fun way to get items and trophies.

Yeah, I think there's some fun to be had with the random events. But I'm not sure that I'll ever be able to convince anyone else to play it with me. Next meetup, perhaps...
12/06/14, 04:04
Shulk is definitely not an easy character to play as. Far too many of his moves leave him wide open. He's got great range, but needs good timing to get his strikes on target. He's still my main, and I'm still constantly tweaking how I play though.
