Fantasy Life on the 3DS
9.14/10 from 5 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Fantasy Life on the 3DS!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Fantasy Life is an RPG with a mix of elements. You first create your own character from a variety of character options, and then you can choose one of twelve "lives" to start off with (think classes or jobs in other RPGs). But don't worry, you have the option to switch between all twelve and can master each one. Different lives excel at different tasks such as crafting, cooking, gathering, fighting, and more. Some people (like Nintendo) compare this game to Animal Crossing but it's really more akin to Rune Factory, as it's more about taking on quests, crafting, gathering, and other such activities than it is about interactions with townsfolk. There are also multiple towns to visit, and the villagers are a lot less in-depth than AC, plus the game does not run in real-time. You can still get a house to fill with furniture though, so AC fans may still like this game.

How Online (and local) Multiplayer Works

-DLC Warning: If you buy the DLC, you will not be able to play multiplayer with anyone who does not have the DLC, and vice versa.

-Multiplayer supports up to three players in one world. The NA, EU, and AU versions of the game are all compatible with each other, but cannot play with the JPN version.

-All players must be on each other's 3DS friend list in order to visit a world. If you try to join someone's world which has two players in it and it won't let you in, it's probably because you are not 3DS friends with the other visitor.

-You cannot advance the story in multiplayer. It would be ideal to first unlock some areas before hosting.

-You do not need to stick together in multiplayer, you are free to travel independently to any part of the world.

-You can fast-travel to the location of another player or the Castele Guild Office, but you cannot fast-travel to any homes. You can still use the airship service to travel from town to town, as well as escorts.

-Items that drop from defeated monsters, felled trees, mined rocks, treasure chests, and fishing spots are not shared, and appear specific to each player. So when you pick up a drop, it will still be visible and available to the other player(s).

-Items that appear on the ground such as flowers, weeds, bugs, etc. are shared. If you pick up a flower, it will disappear for the other player(s) too and won;t be there for them to grab also.

-Bounties are also shared. When turning in a bounty, you will receive as many items are there are players, giving you the option of using the exchange box to share the reward with the other player(s). Only 3 bounties can appear in the world at one time; if a 4th one appears, the oldest one will disappear.

-The Guild Office in Castele has an exchange box which can be used to give/trade items and equipment with the other player(s). There are no limits to what can be given. DO NOT leave any items in the box when you disconnect from multiplayer, or they will disappear for good!

-The game cannot be saved in multiplayer, except when using the exchange box. It may be a good idea to take save breaks if playing for long stretches.

-When a player is going through the loading screen from one area to another, some weird quirks might happen. If you try to pick up a shared item or perform an activity like cutting a tree, you may find that your character freezes in place for a moment, followed by a message that reads "Synchronizing..." before you can move again. If this quirk happens when no player(s) are on a loading screen, and you're unable to perform these actions, then it's lag. Usually, having every player leave the area and come back will fix it.

-You cannot switch your Life in multiplayer, so be sure to choose the one you want before connecting.

-You can still complete active Life challenges and sidequests when playing, but you cannot accept or turn them in until you return to single player.

-You are free to craft/cook/alchemize all you want.

-You cannot use pets or CPU allies in multiplayer.

-You cannot rent a horse in multiplayer. Only the host can use a horse, and only one they own.

-Press Start or Select to snap a photo, saved to the SD card. Photos cannot be viewed in-game.

@ploot Ah, okay, it shouldn't take too long if you focus on it. There are a total of seven story chapters, but the final one does not open up any areas, so you'll have everything available after six chapters.

@gtarrant Not yet. It'll probably be a while.

I've gotten half the Lives to Legend now, and the other half are Hero. Almost there! It's still gonna be a bit though, the challenges that require leveling skills to 15 are really lame, especially since making every item once is only enough for like level 9 or 10.

@gtarrant So, how exactly does the DLC work? Is it possible to just "activate" it for one save file, and then have another save file without the DLC?

I finally got rolling in this recently. I stumbled a bit when the game opened up because I honestly couldn't decide how I wanted to move ahead. I finally chose to focus on the main quest a bit to get moving. I'm only a dozen hours in, which is nothing to most of you crazies, but it's decent for me. I still haven't switched my Life yet. Maybe I won't. Thankfully, I have a buddy at work who's also crazy into this game, so my interest should hopefully remain for a while. That said, Persona Q will be in my possession tomorrow, so we'll see.

@Koovaps
I'd say it's important to at least become an Angler, a Miner, and a Woodcutter at least for a bit so you can fish, mine, and cut trees during your adventure.

You can switch Lives very quickly, and it doesn't require you to be (for example) in your Angler Life in order to fish.

@ploot

That makes sense, and I always really want to collect all the ore and trees and fish as I see them, but part of me also kinda wants to just remain a modest tailor throughout the game. We'll see.

IMO, the gathering Lives are all pretty much essential, and they're some of the most fun I've had in the game.

The crafting Lives are fun too, but their skills are NEVER useful in the field, only at the workbench.

So the way I've been playing it (and I recommend to anyone to do the same) is to switch to tailor, alchemist, carpenter, cook or blacksmith only when you're crafting in town. When exploring, then pick the fighting or gathering Life you prefer.

If you're going to do some fighting then I'd recommend at least briefly switching to a combat Life in order to learn its weapon skill and be able to use them. The dagger is a decent starting weapon, but the other weapon types quickly outclass it, especially after more skills are learned. Daggers never gain any more abilities than what you start with.

You could also try unarmed if you're feeling brave... If nothing else, it looks hilarious.

It can also be helpful to have a wand available, equipping it just to use its healing magic in any Life.

My friend and I have decided that we're going to get the DLC by the end of the year. If anyone who doesn't plan on getting it still wants to play, we'd better do so soon!
12/09/14, 21:17
@Mop it up
By that time, I'll probably get the DLC as well.
For now, I'm a little burnt out on the game.
12/09/14, 21:52
@ploot Aw, bummer. Did you get burnt out because you were trying to rush through the story, or was it for some other reason?
12/10/14, 00:29
@Mop it up
I realized that I needed to upgrade my carpentry pretty high in order to get good staves for my wizard, and just sort of got annoyed.
FOR NOW.
I will return.

Thinking of picking this up tomorrow. Thoughts? lol

What are your favorite classes? As a big fan of Harvest Moon who always wanted to get into Rune Factory but never did, and enjoys RPGs, particularly the class system of Final Fantasy Tactics A2, will I enjoy this?

What's the DLC?

@DrFinkelstein Have you played Dragon Quest III, VI, or IX? The class system is more like it is in those games, where you want to eventually use every class to learn all the skills that come with them. They kind of compliment each other too, since for example you can use the ore you gather as a miner when you make items as a blacksmith.

The NPCs aren't nearly as in depth as they are in games like Harvest Moon and Rune Factory, so for this game, you'll have to enjoy exploring, battling enemies, leveling each Life, and crafting if you want to get the most out of it.

The DLC adds one new area, raises the level and skill caps, adds two story chapters, a few more challenges for each Life, a few more side quests, and other odds and ends.

Its totally worth it. Listen to Mop it up, @DrFinkelstein.
I must add though that the game shines best when played co-op.

I'm tempted to get the DLC, but it'll have to wait after I'm through with a few Christmastime games I have on the go.
12/30/14, 04:04
I'm loving it. Put in well over 10 hours in the last three days. Probably closer to 13. I've worked on Fishing first, then Woodcutter, and finally Cook. Looking forward to continuing on. I've explored the mountain a little and the woods. I keep hearing about the port city but can't get there yet story-wise. My bliss allows the shops there to be expanded from the moment I get there though which is cool.

Any essential tips for me anyone?
01/04/15, 02:53
Any one else get the DLC yet? I am jonesing for some co-op.
01/04/15, 04:43
@DrFinkelstein There aren't really any tips to give, as there isn't really anything that's missable or a "wrong" way to do anything. Just play the game at your own pace, do whatever you feel like doing.

One thing I will say is about stats. You can't max every stat, so take careful consideration how you spend your stat points. However, after you complete the story it is possible to reallocate your stat points, for the cost of some money. So if you aren't happy with the build you have then you'll be able to change it. There is no limit to the number of times you can change your stats, it'll just cost money every time.

Do you plan to play online at all? There are a few restrictions for it, but I still think it's fun and it's how I played a majority of the game. The story can't be done online so that's something to focus on when playing solo. The combat and gathering lives have the best challenges for completing in multiplayer.

@gtarrant Not yet, probably going to be a couple more weeks at least.

@Mop it up
Grrrrrrrr
01/06/15, 02:15
I've gotten the DLC now. @gtarrant, we should set up some time to play, though I'm not sure what we could do together... You're a lot farther along!

Did anyone else get the DLC yet? It'd be nice to have a NegWorld team going!
01/27/15, 00:52
@Mop it up
We can have fun going after some bosses
