Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Every new generation a great dawn emerges where a new game in the acclaimed Super Smash Bros. series graces Nintendo's newest consoles… for the Wii U, that time is almost upon us. Nintendo is truly pulling out all the stops with this one. Here's the breakdown on what we can expect… (Learn more at the Super Smash Bros. website.)

1.) 45+ playable characters (new characters, returning fighters, or accessible via alt costumes)
2.) Releasing November 21st, November 28th, or December 5th depending on your region
3.) Tons of content; from trophies to levels to music tracks to items to pokemon to modes… it seemingly never ends!
4.) Customizable Move-sets
5.) Many control setups; Wii U Gamepad, standard Wii U options, Gamecube controllers, even your 3DS!
6.) Online capable (and encouraged)
7.) Check out Nintendo's 50 Things You Should Know about Smash Bros!
8.) Stages exclusive to the Wii U version. Some epic stages!
9.) Amiibo Support for all existing Amiibos
10.) Gameplay lands somewhere between Melee and Brawl

As you can see, there really is something for everyone, perhaps more than ever before. As I wrote this whole post up, I was listening to the Super Smash Bros. Brawl soundtrack and remembering the hours and days and weeks and months of fun I've had with that game. This will be no different and really will shake the Wii U community up in the best ways. Nintendo is on the eve of quite possible the most acclaimed game the console will have. This is a very exciting moment for Nintendo gamers. Speaking back on the music, you can listen to a bunch of neat samples from the upcoming game at the SmashBros.com Music Page. Be sure to check out Kapp'n's Song! It's a personal favorite of mine. The 3DS version is to have two-songs per stage but the Wii U version is meant to have that and more, even some songs from past games as well.

Please enjoy a few of my favorite images found on the official Super Smash Bros. website.

The release date in North America is November 21st and it was just moved up to November 28th in Europe. For all other regions you can expect December 5th. In the mean time, there's always the 3DS version which looks incredible in it's own right! You can discuss it in Jargon's thread here; Super Smash Bros. 3DS. We should aim to keep this thread focused on the Wii U version so that the 3DS discussion ends up in it's right place. Keep in mind that the Daily Updates are still being provided by Sakurai (for a few more weeks at least) and the best place to find and discuss those is Stephen's Super Smash Bros. News Discussion (Roster Spoilers) Now With Daily Images thread. I do my best to update that daily with the Sakurai posts.

Who is your main? What are you most excited for? Finally, be sure to have your friends added on your Wii U! I'll do my best to keep this thread updated with the various users who are playing this online.

@missypissy

I didn't find it that hard to do, but there was a good amount of luck with it. I too did it with the character that would unlock both and you can't really just lower or raise your percentage because of other factors like how far away you are when you swing the bat and whether or not you smash through the glass by hitting early. I think I managed to get 1642. Consider me pleased.

I did manage to get one kill with Kirby on Cruel Smash but I'll tell you... I think the max you need to get for one of the boxes is 8 and... umm it was hard enough getting 4 on the 3DS.

The smoothness of online compared to Brawl is extremely impressive.

Everyone should update their status for ownership and currently playing.
You can do so right at the top of this thread!

Pfeh. So it turns out that we're not getting the GC adapter released seperately here. And I thought the bunde included the adapter AND a controller (which I didn't need), so I didn't bother to preorder- Besides I wanted the digital version.

Apparently I can order the adapter direct from Nintendo though, so I did that.

I think I did ok in the end. Ordinarilly doing it my way would be stupid- The bundle was $89.95 here, with the game alone being $69.95. Buying the game digitally however costs $79.95 + $30 for ordering the adapter directly from Nintendo. So $109.95 for a digital version of what I could have gotten for $89.95.

BUT, I snared $180 worth of E-shop cards from EB on the weekend at 20% off, effectively giving me a 20% discount on whatever I buy on E-shop- Including Smash. Factor in the 10% E-shop credit from the DDP, and a $79.95 digital copy effectively comes down to about $56.

Add in the $30 adapter and I actually beat the bundle price. Yay!

Only problem is that I now have to wait 5-10 business days for the adapter to be delivered. Game is out (digitally) on Friday night. Boooooo.

Also no preload in Australia from what I can tell so far. This is awful.

.....I'm going to go play my 3DS.

So I'm hearing the Gamecube controller adaptor is pretty much sold out everywhere? Is this true? Maybe no 8 player Smash in the near future for me after all...
11/24/14, 02:35
@Zero

I heard that too, which is why I scrambled to make sure I could lock one down.

Maybe you can order direct from Nintendo too?
11/24/14, 02:49
They massively underestimated the demand for the adapters and bundles. I'm surprised I was able to get one... ordered it for store pick-up on BestBuy.com at midnight before launch. Had I known they would be so damn rare, I'd have picked up a few more to ship off to you guys. People are selling them for ridiculously slimeball prices on eBay and Amazon.

Hopefully they'll get more out there soon and we see other software support the device in the future. Still really want those Gamecube Virtual Console games, Nintendo.

I miss the old target practice.

I'm down for some online 2night! Let's make it happen.
11/24/14, 04:42
I gotta say, I'm a bit disappointed with the input lag online. I've heard mostly good things about the 3DS multiplayer, "lag free" this and that, but I have a several frame lag happening online. Amanda felt it too. It's like you hit a button and then wait a bit until the guy onscreen does the action. Is this how it's always going to be or can they patch it to improve performance?

Ironically this also happened during Halo 4 campaign online the other night, but that game's online performance is another story.

(And my internet is good. Ping is good, 25mb down, 30mb up, DMZ Hosting on my Wii U's IP...not sure what else I can do). And it sucks because I mostly just get my butt whooped online.

@PogueSquadron
It is absolutely, positively possible to have no lag. No quotes.
I played for about 3 hours tonight with my Smash rival and we had no problems at all.

Absolutely no difference between my controls against the waiting room sandbag (no lag) and battles.
Trust me, it's possible.

Now, for the first couple rounds before that we actually had the 1/4 second (or so) input lag for a few matches. I really don't know what changed.

@Zero
The adapter is sold out everywhere, yeah, but there are several GCN Smash controllers available everywhere. Makes no sense since these things require the adapter. BOOOO.
I scoured my city to no avail. Luckily, the 3DS version acclimated me to the diamond layout for Smash. My Pro controller works pretty nicely, although I will be getting an adapter when I can.
11/24/14, 06:59
Are you sure? I trust you ploots but I know I've seen others online think they have no lag, when really they're just used to it. Maybe there IS something about my internet?

My TV and the Gamepad share identical input lag specs. I've probably played online for several hours at this point and have yet to find an opponent that really feels comparable to local play

I also suspect the Gamecube adapter is presenting its own lag but that's another story. I'm sure the Wavebird doesn't help but all these things probably add up.

Maybe I need to go get some sort of one frame or better TV to play on, haha.

Edit: Also, if it's not ideal or we're just way too sensitive to it (even though Amanda is my witness here), would an Ethernet adapter help?

I got the game for my birthday, but I haven't been home for a few nights, but now I finally get to play it!

Brick20 is my Nintendo ID, and of course Brick is my nickname.

@PogueSquadron
I'm positive.
Trust me, Smash has been my favourite series since the N64 game. I've put countless hours into all of them, and the input lag you're talking about is very obvious to me. Drives me nuts.

That said, tonight was the first time I've had such a good connection. I'm hoping it can stay that way.

As for the Ethernet adapter, I don't have one myself so I'm not sure about it. I know Nintendo suggested it in a Direct.
11/24/14, 07:53
I use an Ethernet adapter and it works well enough to get a good connection despite my distance from the people I'm playing. I've definitely had matches with input lag, of varying strength, but I can also definitely report that it's possible to get them without it as well.

lol
11/24/14, 17:32
It took me a while to understand what the amiibo were for. All you do is scan them in and fight among side them in smash mode? It's pretty fun to fight along side them. I am a little disappointed in one thing: I like the idea of two player classic mode, but I wish there was a way to let your Amiibo be the second player in classic mode. I'd be more attached to my figure if they were helping me through classic and all star mode instead of just being an extra player in smash mode.
11/24/14, 17:54
Yeah, I'm pretty cold on the presentation of amiibos after playing with them in Smash. I'm not going to develop a relationship with a piece of plastic and a computer AI that doesn't technically need that piece of plastic to exist. I bought my amiibo on impulse and I hadn't really been paying too much attention to the implementation in Smash. That's my fault, of course. But I'd hoped this would be a way I could save and carry my custom character to other Wii U's for me to play with. I thought that's what was going on in that "Boy Meets Girl' video we saw a while back. The fact I can't do that really makes the implementation bland, to me.

So my take on Amiibo, at this point: Only get them if you want the toy. The game implementation is nothing special, so far. At least with Smash. Haven't tried MK8.
11/24/14, 18:00
@kriswright I could've sworn before smash came out that Amiibo fighters could be either AI or controlled by the player. The fact that I can't scan in my unique Amiibo and fight as it is a failure.
11/24/14, 18:05
@Scrawnton

Or you could, I don't know, actually choose said fighter from the roster?
