Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on the Wii U

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Every new generation a great dawn emerges where a new game in the acclaimed Super Smash Bros. series graces Nintendo's newest consoles… for the Wii U, that time is almost upon us. Nintendo is truly pulling out all the stops with this one. Here's the breakdown on what we can expect… (Learn more at the Super Smash Bros. website.)

1.) 45+ playable characters (new characters, returning fighters, or accessible via alt costumes)
2.) Releasing November 21st, November 28th, or December 5th depending on your region
3.) Tons of content; from trophies to levels to music tracks to items to pokemon to modes… it seemingly never ends!
4.) Customizable Move-sets
5.) Many control setups; Wii U Gamepad, standard Wii U options, Gamecube controllers, even your 3DS!
6.) Online capable (and encouraged)
7.) Check out Nintendo's 50 Things You Should Know about Smash Bros!
8.) Stages exclusive to the Wii U version. Some epic stages!
9.) Amiibo Support for all existing Amiibos
10.) Gameplay lands somewhere between Melee and Brawl

As you can see, there really is something for everyone, perhaps more than ever before. As I wrote this whole post up, I was listening to the Super Smash Bros. Brawl soundtrack and remembering the hours and days and weeks and months of fun I've had with that game. This will be no different and really will shake the Wii U community up in the best ways. Nintendo is on the eve of quite possible the most acclaimed game the console will have. This is a very exciting moment for Nintendo gamers. Speaking back on the music, you can listen to a bunch of neat samples from the upcoming game at the SmashBros.com Music Page. Be sure to check out Kapp'n's Song! It's a personal favorite of mine. The 3DS version is to have two-songs per stage but the Wii U version is meant to have that and more, even some songs from past games as well.

Please enjoy a few of my favorite images found on the official Super Smash Bros. website.

The release date in North America is November 21st and it was just moved up to November 28th in Europe. For all other regions you can expect December 5th. In the mean time, there's always the 3DS version which looks incredible in it's own right! You can discuss it in Jargon's thread here; Super Smash Bros. 3DS. We should aim to keep this thread focused on the Wii U version so that the 3DS discussion ends up in it's right place. Keep in mind that the Daily Updates are still being provided by Sakurai (for a few more weeks at least) and the best place to find and discuss those is Stephen's Super Smash Bros. News Discussion (Roster Spoilers) Now With Daily Images thread. I do my best to update that daily with the Sakurai posts.

Who is your main? What are you most excited for? Finally, be sure to have your friends added on your Wii U! I'll do my best to keep this thread updated with the various users who are playing this online.

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

Just unlocked another slew of challenge boxes from a single Smash Tour game. I'm loving this weird little mode.

2000G - Place first in 5 or more battles in a single game of Smash Tour.
Crazy Orders Pass - Defeat 12 or more fighters in a single Smash Tour.
Pac-Land - Play all the maps in Smash Tour.
Air Attacker Brawn Badge - Collect 15 different special moves.

Edit: And why can't I simply restart an event? Damn it's a pain to back out and go back in when trying to unlock the rewards.

@DrFinkelstein

I know you asked me which event my friend and I struggled with 2 pages ago, but I didn't want to be rude and not answer. Haha.

It was the one where all the Game & Watches fall from the sky and you can't let them touch the ground. It seems so easy, but if either person even makes one stupid mistake on hard, you're done!

We've decided that we refuse to play on any other difficulty when playing together. I find that playing the events alone can become a lot more frustrating... I guess not having that other person there to keep morale up or be the other guy responsible for making a mess of things.

@Hinph

Ah okay! I haven't come across that one yet. I've been doing pretty well solo on them. I've managed to get most of the rewards too... but... that very first one. The one where you fight Bowser and DK without taking a hit (for the item that is) and I just can't do it without taking some kind of damage.

Any tips folks? Also, thanks Hinph for not forgetting about me.

I'm loving the game. I went to a local gaming group meetup last night and got to play with 8 players and that was just crazy fun, even if it was difficult to keep track of what was going on.

Words can't express how happy I am that the online is functional. Just was playing some great 4 player with Lou, Peter and AJ and it it was definitely good enough on my end to feel like honest to goodness Smash. And that seems to be the typical experience for me so far. I've only had one really terribly lagged match with friends.

I consider myself very fortunate that I was able to play local multiplayer in Brawl on a consistent basis for years and years, and now I feel lucky again that it seems they've made a usable online just in time for me moving far away from my family. I'm sure if I had regular local games I might find what lag there is a little more frustrating, but as it is, it's perfectly fine for me. I just hope we keep the Negative World online community going strong for many years to come.

I had fun playing with ya, Jargon! There was input lag, definitely enough to mess with some timings, but certainly not enough to make it not fun! Online has been pretty decent to me, thank goodness, and that seems to be the case for most!

Such a good game! Though, playing locally with my wife is a ton of fun, too. I hope one day she's grown enough in smash that she's my equal so I can always have my favorite opponent right next to me.

This Mii is for Carlosrox. He might want it (if he doesn't already have it) to fight against or as.

This is bogus. Look at how many challenge boxes cannot use hammers. Why even give us the hammers then? I like having the option but this is kinda ridiculous to have so many, let alone one, blocked off. I've already had this discussion in another thread but I at least wanted to share a screenshot to show which are no-gos.

Of those that I know of, the following are challenges you cannot pass up. (Note that others may also exist that aren't pictured but I've already unlocked them.)

Clear the true Solo All-Star mode on hard while playing as ???
Complete the reward conditions for all of the Solo Events.
Clear the true All-Star mode on hard difficulty.
Clear Solo Classic at intensity 8.0 with 2 or more characters.
Clear Solo 10-Man Smash without taking any damage while playing as Dr. Mario.
Get 1 or more KOs in a single Solo Cruel Smash.
Hit Sandbag between 1640 and 1656 ft. in Solo Home-Run Contest while playing as R.O.B..
Clear the "Fitness Junkie" event on normal difficulty or higher.
Play alone and as ??? and destroy 100 blocks in a single game of Trophy Rush.
Get a score of 25 or more in a single Rival Smash while playing as Dark Pit.
Clear 100-Man Smash within 3 minutes.
Clear 100-Man Smash.
Clear Solo Classic at intensity 2.0 with 5 or more characters.

I'm missing 10 other blocked challenges because I simply can't yet read what they are. Honestly, most if not all of those are within my reach at the skill level I currently possess but it's the principle of the thing... I wish I knew how Sakurai chose these and why. Then maybe I'd care less that he did what he did.

Had some good times last night and worked on opening up some of hidden characters tonight. So much fun.

@Jargon

This is great news!

Brawl's online mode was all but ignored by me given how god awfully laggy it was.

@Cubed777
@DrFinkelstein

Welp, Game & Watch just kicked Ganondorf's ass in my most embarrassing Smash Bros. memory to date. SIIIIIIGH.

I probably wasn't ready for him because I never got him in Melee! GARBAGE.

EDIT-
@Jargon

Phew! That worked, thanks buddy!

@DrFinkelstein

Why is that bogus? I wish you didn't get credit for any of the ones that you hammer open. You should only "reveal" what the are. I felt like a big stinking cheater when I got credit for stuff I didn't even do. Earn it, brahhhh.

@Mr_Mustache

No problemo. I had the same worries when a hidden character beat my ass in the 3DS version.
11/23/14, 13:39
@Mr_Mustache

Oh yeah. I should've told you that those new challenger encounters are 10x more difficult than previous versions of the game.
11/23/14, 14:59
@Jargon

Yeah, it was fun! My skills are just not as finely honed as you guys. My timing is all off too. I need to play some harder CPUs to get some practice with countering, blocking, and grabbing. Some of the combos you guys were doing were also so simple, but I cannot do them. I need to practice more!
11/23/14, 15:17
Tried playing Smash Tour with my nephews. It was just an endless string of "What is this?" "I don't understand what's going on!" "I hate this mode!"

...

I thought it was pretty cool, though...
11/23/14, 15:20
@Anand

I played it by myself, and it took half the game before I got the idea of what was going on. I actually enjoyed it. Fun way to get items and trophies.
11/23/14, 16:40
One of my favorite things so far is that we each hear our own songs for a stage.

It's a small thing I know, but I just like that fact that I'll always hear my selection instead of someone else's even when it's their stage that gets picked
11/23/14, 17:06
:Played online again. Thoughts:

-Finds players super fast (at least for 1v1)
-Matches are generally smooth with no hiccups
-there's still some input lag. Not enough to ruin the experience but enough to be a little annoying. I've heard of people having a practically lagless game, but I have yet to have a match that fools me into thinking I'm playing an offline match.

Is the lag online expected to get better? My internet is rock solid and fast, and I'm a little disappointed it's not more responsive. It's still pretty good though. Shulk is a BEAST.
11/23/14, 17:29
@DrFinkelstein
Nice pic, thanks! Haven't used any hammers yet (got 3) but it's good to know which ones I can't use on.

Spoiler for one of the challenges there

Hitting the sandbag between 1640 and 1656 is a bitch to do, so I only attempted it with the unlockable character because it clears both challenges that require it. Believe all I got were two trophies.

Also, I've completed 74 challenges already! :)

Speaking of which, I'm almost to 300 trophies and I see we've got a challenge to collect 700 of them!!! It's starting to really slow down, my collection rate, but I guess I need to hit the higher difficulties in Classic Mode since I tend to only get new stuff up there...
