Welcome to the official discussion thread for Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U!

This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!

Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.

With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Are you impressed with the Mario Kart TV feature, excited for the Super Horn, or bummed at how battle mode has changed? Share your thoughts on the game below, now, upon release, and well after! Below you'll find a list of Nintendo Network IDs as compiled by our own Mop It Up! Be sure your friends are added to your console!

This is a very unlikely thing for a DLC hater like myself to say, but I enjoyed the DLC. All it needed was a Nintendo logo!

My favorite track is probably the Excitebike one. The randomized hills are a fantastic concept. (Now where are my blue/green/yellow variants?)

The F-Zero track is super-cool and very fun, but kind of simplistic. Ditto for the Dragon track. The fanservice on the Zelda track had me grinning, but how "Zelda" was the track itself?

I guess I felt that most of the new tracks were kind of simple, overall, in terms of overall layout and racing lines, although I definitely appreciated getting five of them. And, come to think of it, tracks that are too busy (like Grumble Volcano and Maple Treeway) kind of turn me off. I'm looking forward to Time Trial-ing a lot of these tracks.

Bring on the next DLC!

I find the DLC to be a mixed bag. I don't care for any of the "characters" it brings, but some of the vehicles are nice. They should all have come with tires and a glider though, but I have that complaint about the base selection as well. As for the tracks...

-Yoshi Circuit: They probably should have spiced this one up more, but even still, this was one of my faves from Double Dash!! so it's still fun.
-ExciteBike Arena: I like the concept, but feel the track should be longer. This just makes me want a new Excite game though.
-Dragon Driftway: This one has some fun twists and turns, but I don't like the theme of it. The whole Chinese motif for the graphics and music just doesn't fit at all, I don't get it.
-Mute City: This one definitely captures the soulless feel of an F-Zero game, heh heh. Aside from the boring visuals it's fun to race on, but I felt like item spamming was bad here. Or maybe it was just an unlucky period.

-Wario's Gold Mine: I don't really like the changes they made to this one, it feels less dynamic and easier compared to the original. The original was fun because it took some skill and had some danger.
-SNES Rainbow Road: This one feels like a throwaway, it's a real stinker.
-Ice Ice Outpost: I like the idea of the two "lanes" thing throughout this track, but it seems a tad plain. There should have been an underwater section here at least. There are a couple shortcuts that I haven't figured out how to take properly yet, but, they seem pretty dangerous for the small payoff.
-Hyrule Circuit: Probably the best of the bunch, this one just has a nice flow to it and is fun to race, not to mention the nice Zelda nods.

Overall, the DLC is a bit underwhelming and the tracks don't seem up to the quality of most of the new tracks in the base game, but still worthwhile.

@Mop it up
SNES Rainbow Road (MK7 Version... in MK8) is actually my favourite Rainbow Road, you stinker!

I have noticed some issues of the camera clipping slightly through the ground for a few seconds.

Also SNES Rainbow Road sucks.

I loved all those little touches. The chest music playing when the item roulette is running, the rupees instead of coins...

I want an option to make the whole game like that

@ploot@pokepal148

Best Rainbow Road is MK Wii. I still have no clue how the N64 version challenged it in my poll a couple of years back.

People are insane.

@Shadowlink eh, I like the actual MK7 one, one of the few good things about that game.

just played a few online matches with fellow NW 'ers... Once the round was done the communication error happened and none of us got a chance to say our thanks/goodbyes. Nice matches.

As for the DLC tracks - yeah the F-Zero/Hyrule courses are the stars for sure but for what we got for the price we paid... It's been more then worth it. By far the best Mario Kart ever in terms of tracks. If only that battle mode would get updated.... oh well...

I hate this game and it's stupid. My favorite new track is definitely the dragon one.
11/17/14, 05:40
DLC great. The F-Zero track is a feast for the eyes and ears.

The signs say Show Me Your Moves!!

I'm pretty happy overall with the DLC. I think the "themed" tracks are all pretty solid (Excite Bike might be my favorite?), and both Yoshi and Rainbow Road are two of my favorite classic tracks so having them back is nice. Don't really care much for Wario's gold mine but it isn't bad. Neither of the new non-themed courses (Dragon and Ice) do much for me though. I kind of half suspect they were made with the original set and held back for not being up to par... but that is just a theory.

I'm kind of sad that unless I go out of my way to do so, I may never get to play these stages online due to the weird way Nintendo set things up. Ah well.

@Mop it up The Chinese motive is a bit odd, and doubly so since it seems to be a "Lakitu" stage and like... is Lakitu Chinese? Is that the message here? Why does Lakitu = China?!

Finally played both packs this weekend, and I'm impressed. I like that Nintendo changed up a few things, even if they were somewhat little (rupees instead of coins for Hyrule Circuit, the sound effects for the item wheel on Hyrule Circuit, all anti-gravity for Mute City, the way coins refill on Mute City, random placement of obstacles in Excitebike). Good fun!

pokepal, is that you?

SNES Rainbow Road is the best Mario Kart track of all time. You're all insane!
11/17/14, 17:10
@Zero

Why can't you play the new tracks online? I was playing online over the weekend with random people and the new tracks were chosen frequently. The game will automatically pair you with other people who also have the DLC, and there's an option to turn this off in case you want to play with people who don't have the DLC.
11/17/14, 17:26
@TriforceBun Not me!

There is something about this one in 8 though that felt a bit off though. Is it wider now? I've only raced it once (on 150 cc) but it seemed too easy, usually this track makes me work a bit harder to stay on. Also it feels like it is a lot tougher to get the boost when the track waves from the thwomps. Am I going nuts?!

@canonj Oh I didn't know it paired you with people who have the DLC, I thought I remembered reading something about how that wasn't going to happen. Well... good then!

@TriforceBun

I think it's fantastic. 7 did it right, 8's is no different (and that's a good thing).
11/17/14, 17:45
@Zero

Ooh, nice list. I remember dat.

I do think the Wii U Rainbow Road SNES might be slightly wider, probably to accommodate for the 12 players. I still think it plays really well, but it would've been nice if it felt as intense and difficult as before. Of course, I only played it in 100cc which is already pretty easy, so I'm looking forward to going online with it and dealing with real competition.

They should at least make SNES tracks 5 laps, no idea why they're against that.

@Zero The original SNES Mario Kart has sharper handling, so I think SNES Rainbow Road is wider in MK7 and 8 to compensate for the wider turning radius that these games have. Most retro tracks are wider/larger than the originals, usually the ones from SNES, N64, GBA, and GCN Mario Kart games, and probably for the same reason: those games have sharper cornering than the more recent ones.
11/17/14, 21:19
@Mop it up Yeah but I mean that it feels a lot wider to me in 8 than in 7. May be my imagination, may be that they made it wider to deal with 12 racers. But it just feels easier to me.

@Zero Probably that it's on a big HD screen instead of a tiny sub-SD screen. The two versions feel about the same size to me.
