Welcome to the official discussion thread for Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U!

This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!

Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.

With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Are you impressed with the Mario Kart TV feature, excited for the Super Horn, or bummed at how battle mode has changed? Share your thoughts on the game below, now, upon release, and well after! Below you'll find a list of Nintendo Network IDs as compiled by our own Mop It Up! Be sure your friends are added to your console!

The ice one is pretty fun. Those shortcuts are hard to hit though!

OH! The first DLC pack is available today?!? I know what I'm playing when I get home! Anyone up for some online MK8 tonight?

My wife and I tried it all out and we really enjoyed it! I didn't own mk wii our mk on snes (though I played each a couple times) so those levels were pretty fresh for us. Hyrule is definitely very cool, but we had a lot of fun with both f zero and the dragon one. I'm not a big fan of ice ice outpost so far.

I really enjoyed my first play through of the two new cups. I need an option to turn down the sound effects and turn up the music. From what I can hear of the new tunes, they're great.

My wife and I played through, and we quite enjoyed the new tracks.
Wario's Gold Mine seems to have taken out its ramps, and changed the mine carts from hazards to helpers. I like it!
The Master Cycle does not gel with me, though. BLAH.

@anon_mastermind
I agree.
The music sounds so good. Why is it so drowned out?!

I only tried a couple on time trial when I was home, but so far, so good!

@ploot

The carts don't hurt you on Wario's track!? I might finally enjoy that one then!

@ploot

Imagine my surprise when I tried to squeeze by one to make it to the shortcut, failed miserably, and rather than being toast as I'd assumed, I was given a pleasant boost!

The Zelda course is great and it looks the part. I'd love to see a Zelda game with that art style.

@ploot git gud. Seriously I'm still getting used to how awkwar-err I mean awesomely the Roy Koopa Pimpmobile (tm) handles.

Especially now that the Triforce Tires have replaced the Mercedes ones.

Just had time to play through the Triforce Cup. Very nice.. And yes..I was one of many that avoided those Carts on Wario's Track.. So they help you out now?? Cool. And yeah..the ramps are gone. pooh.

The Zelda course itself was unique - I like all the different sound effects (like the "opening of the treasure chest" when you collect at ? block and let it cycle through the items.

The SNES Rainbow road was beautiful... Dare I say FINAL DESTINATION of MK8?? I only played through on a slower speed.. Online at 150cc would be absolutely insane - nowhere to go but off the track with those square corners. I didn't mind the Master Cycle..especially on that course.

Anywho..Can't wait to play through the rest later this weekend..maybe I'll see you all online then

The Triforce Tires look surprisingly good on the Roy Koopa Pimpmobile.

I'm loving this damn DLC. That is all.

@gojira
Thanks for that.The guitar and sax combo kills it!
11/14/14, 08:58
@anon_mastermind

Yeah, it's perfect. Now I want a new version of Big Blue.

@gojira

Those arrangements are so dynamic and harmonious. I love them!

The courses in this DLC pack are very fun. The Excitebike, Legend of Zelda, and F-Zero-themed tracks capture the spirit of their respective video game series so well.

I came out of video game retirement to play the new Zelda course last night and I was a little disappointed. It's okay, but it's really just a small loop around the castle, no changes in scenery, no diverse locations, no major short cuts, secrets, or alternative paths, not even any ant-grav or underwater (just one small jump). Not super impressed, I feel like most of the standard courses in the main game are much better.
11/14/14, 21:50
@Jargon I felt that way about the retro tracks in here at least, the visuals for them didn't seem as updated as the retros in the base game, not so much in textures but more in that they seem kinda empty with objects. Not sure about the other tracks, they seem fine for what they are. I mean something like ExciteBike Arena is smaller in scale than other tracks, but it looked fine to me.

If the visuals on all tracks are a step down from the regular game, part of it may have been to keep the data size lower.
