Mario Kart 8 Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U
9.14/10 from 37 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!

Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.

With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Are you impressed with the Mario Kart TV feature, excited for the Super Horn, or bummed at how battle mode has changed? Share your thoughts on the game below, now, upon release, and well after! Below you'll find a list of Nintendo Network IDs as compiled by our own Mop It Up! Be sure your friends are added to your console!

@pokepal148

Well then that's disappointing. My response continues in your thread but that is a bit annoying for non-bought-DLC folks.

Really dug into Battle mode for the first time tonight..Not with anyone in particular though (you are all playing Hyrule warriors right now). My feelings for it have changed - for the better:

Yoshi Valley is my new block fort/double deck. I really had fun - I know the battle mode in this game has not been everone's cup of tea this time around because it's on tracks instead of large 'rooms' but I'm starting to welcome the change of pace compared to the other releases.

Yes this mode still needs a full square room ...and maybe some more options (like having no time limit) but Yoshi Valley was/is glorious. Moo Moo meadows is a good one too followed by Donut plains. Don't forget that you can call up the map onto the main screen to find everyone.

Battle mode could be better..but it could have been a whole lot worse. It's also cool that you can play solo with just the CPU as opponents if you want.

@Smerd I agree, the new battle mode has its moments and some of the tracks they've chosen work pretty well. My only real complaint is that this is a replacement for battle arenas instead of an addition to them. I don't think anyone would be complaining about things if the game had the usual amount of arenas plus these 8 tracks thrown in, then we wouldn't be missing anything.

@Mop it up
yeah exactly....
maybe something will come along via DLC..but I doubt it.

PSA: the DLC is up.

@Hinph

Downloading NOW! It'll be ready by the time I get home (though it'll be ready probably before I leave for work but still...).

WOO! Excite-a-mundo!

So, I whined about Link being out of place in Mario Kart and everything, and while I still think that's true this Zelda themed level they've got in here is so good that I hardly even care anymore. Rupees instead of coins, 'unlocking' a boost pad through a puzzle of sorts...it's just too good.
11/13/14, 13:31
Awesome! I can't wait to try out the new tracks tonight.
11/13/14, 14:29
Just tried both cups with my wife! Our favorites are the F-Zero and Hyrule tracks. Lots of fun. Not as big fans of the retro levels they picked. Rainbow Road SNES is probably the highlight, and even that one was already in the Wii game as well. My wife got a kick out of the Excitebike level, but it was more interesting in concept that actually playing it, in my opinion. The other new levels are pretty ho hum, but not bad.

One thing I noticed was that the new levels definitely don't seem as polished visually as the ones originally included. Definitely not as pretty as I've come to expect from the game. Anyone else feel the same way or am I crazy?
11/13/14, 14:44
@Jargon

Hmm, they look fine to me. The F-Zero track is especially pretty. I like how you collect coins in it
11/13/14, 14:51
@Jargon

Small correction: the SNES version of Rainbow Road was in Mario Kart 7, not in Mario Kart Wii.

Which kind of makes it worse, since the 3DS game is more recent.
11/13/14, 15:42
Yeah that's a little too soon for a repeat. I wonder why they chose that one, aside from the obvious "it's cheaper" answer. Can't wait to try these out!
11/13/14, 16:10
Finally went ahead and preordered both last night. Something to look forward to tonight after the girls go to bed!
11/13/14, 16:17
Played through all the levels now and love pretty much everything. Not a big fan of Wario's Gold Mine this time around despite it being one of my favourites on Wii, but the rest is excellent, IMO. The ExciteBike track is perhaps not very spectacular, but the changing layouts and the heavy item bombardment on the straights make it lots of fun, I think. I'm already getting hyped up for the next DLC pack.
11/13/14, 16:23
@r_hjort

This is the second I've seen it mentioned but what changing layout? It's the same exact thing every time.
11/13/14, 16:25
@VofEscaflowne
Believe the ramps change with each lap.

Downloaded the content before work, so I'll get to try it out tonight.
11/13/14, 16:27
@missypissy

Must be pretty minor then cause I've noticed no such thing
11/13/14, 16:28
@VofEscaflowne
Yeah, like @missypissy says, the ramps change, but they change every race, not with each lap. Boost pads and mud puddles change too. Last time I played the level it started off with a boost pad and a series of smaller jumps, but now it's got some mud and the biggest type of ramp instead, for instance. Not the biggest changes ever, but it fits with the theme and I like it.

EDIT: The Time Trial version of the stage appears to be the same ever time however.

I really like the ExciteBike course. And the F-Zero one, and the Zelda one.

SNES Rainbow Road might be my favorite MK course ever, so I'm happy to see it return!

All in all, nice DLC. I was a little underwhelmed by Ice Ice Outpost though.
11/13/14, 16:58
I liked the ice one. I like seeing all these tracks with new music (or new versions of old songs). Nice job Nintendo.
