I can understand why some Christians (and religious folks in general) would find the story of Bayonetta uncomfortable but like some of you have already said, it's not really a "Biblical" take on angels, demons, heaven, hell, etc. In the universe of this series, angles and demons are about equal on the morality scale. I wouldn't say Bayonetta is working for Satan (is Satan even mentioned in these games? I don't think he is...I'm not even sure he exists in this world). She, as a witch is simply allied with the inhabitants of Inferno, whereas the sages are allied with Paradiso, in order to keep balance.

I'm not really religious anymore but I was when I first played through Bayonetta 1 and its themes didn't bother me at all then. The world Platinum has created shouldn't be looked at through the lens of Christianity as it's only taking minor inspiration from it.

Yeah, you've got angels and demons, heaven and hell... but this doesn't have anything to do with Christianity. Yahweh, Jesus, and Lucifer are not a part of this universe.

Skip the cutscenes if you are uncomfortable. The story is awful and the characters are obnoxious. You wouldn't be missing anything.

Although I think the story in these games is a bit silly, I actually really like the lore and the universe.

I'm in it for the monster bashing! No dissatisfaction there.

I haven't bothered reading any of the books you pick up during the game and often check my phone during the cutscenes, to be honest... they get a chuckle out of me every now and then. I also like Bayonetta herself, which is the important part.

@OrbitalBeard
@Hinph

They DO outright mention others though, which is kinda weird. When going through some of the Items, I'm pretty sure there is what that mentions Kali. Aren't there other ones in there as well? Can't remember (too "halo poor" to endeavor..)

And as mentioned earlier, Bayonetta does at some point go "Jesus, what happened here?" even if you don't see the guy, so Christianity is around in that universe..somewhere.

I think I'm on the final chapter of Bayonetta. Not sure how long I'm going to stick around here before moving onto Bayonetta 2. I've really made an effort to collect as much as I can though! I like the things that you get for "finding half" of something, so you have an idea of what to expect. The fact that I didn't hit my Alfheim halfway point is confusing though..I must REALLY stink at finding stuff.

After knocking down 67 and 68, I went back earlier and did get what I thought would be my last Blood Crow Whatever until I realized (when I didn't get an award for the pair) that I simply read wrong. So now I'm back in Chapter III (or IV) looking for one more. I'LL FIND YOU!

I can't tell you how surprised I was (a while ago) when I realized that after they fly away, you can simply back up and try again. Having one shot at these things (as I initially thought) was a sad time.

I finally beat the game (again). It was a bad sign if I thought to myself "I remember this part/boss." Because that usually meant it was something I didn't like the first time I played it. The game was much more fun towards the beginning when you were going through a level and doing a bit of exploring while you meet a handful of enemies every so often. Late in the game it feels like just a boss rush for three or four levels.

I know we've all complained about the QTEs but I'm going to pile on a bit. They feel kinda inconsistent. You're in the middle of a boss fight and something's coming at you. Should you dodge? Even though that is maybe the most major mechanic of the game, probably not. Should you press X+A because that's what every similar situation has call for in the last few levels, nope. You should press up + jump, something you haven't had to do since the third level. Stupid.

Or after you beat the final boss. We all know this game is super over the top. And there have been a few similar situations you've played in this game before. So what do I think would be the over the top, aligning with earlier levels thing to do? Maybe bash through all the planets on the way to the Sun? And get extra points for every one. Nope you're supposed to avoid them all which is extremely easy and boring. And if you fail it's counted as a death. Ugh...

But in the end that doesn't ruin the game for me, it just makes for some really annoying parts in an otherwise fantastic game.

@gojira

I'll try to finish tonight so we can talk more.

This game is fun, but skimming through the comments shows that I have some of the same issues others do.

1) QTEs. They feel out of place and inconsistent.
2) The driving stages. I felt they went on too long. They were a nice deviation, but could've been shorter.
3) I like the beginning stages more than the last few. As someone stated before, it was nice to explore and roam around. These final stages are sadly just boss rushes, which is ok because I like the combat, but I still would've liked to run around.

I'll give some final thoughts when I beat it.

Finished the game today. I scored it a 7 out of 10. I'm hoping the sequel improves on this game. The combat was so fast and fun, and some of the bosses were engaging and epic.

Too bad about the things I mentioned previously. I also want to add in that the camera at times was pretty awful. Plus, I hate the old down is up/up is down when controlling it. Bah.

The final chapter and credits were very long. I'm not a fan of games with unusually long credits. But, I have to admit I enjoyed the playable bits and the bonus at the end.

This game has a good sense of humor, and engaging characters. I look forward to starting 2!

@TheOldManFromZelda
You can change the camera controls (Y and X axis) in the options.
I THINK Bayonetta 2 defaults to the way you like it though.

Started my first play through yesterday... 2 hours later and I'm diggin' it. The combat is fast and furious, and I like the tone and style so far. It's pretty difficult, too - need to learn the enemy patterns.

@TheOldManFromZelda

Hey, good job! I SHOULD'VE been done by now, but I've been away from it for a few days. BARGH.

@ploot

Wow, I had a problem with that, too. Thanks, bro!

@anon_mastermind

Good luck! Note that using Items hurts your bottom line.

Alright, the credits have rolled (though I was getting a serious Too Many Cooks vibe), and I moved onto the Hard mode. Apparently there are 3 separate groups of birds to get (boooo) so I've only got 33% of them. I can't even imagine doing this game on Very Hard or whatever it is.

I redid the 2nd stage, and I STILL missed the 3rd and 5th medals. Does anyone have ANY idea what the scoop is with this (without looking it up)?

EDIT- I'll probably move onto Bayonetta 2 next week.

I finally started this today. I got through the first bit of the prologue and had to run back to work...but so far, so good. The controls are solid and the action is fun.

@ludist210

It lays a GREAT foundation for Bayonetta 2. Anything you're having trouble with now (IF you're having trouble) will be alleviated when you get to the sequel. Everything.

Late to the party!

A friend loaned me this game earlier this week, and I cracked it open. To quickly echo a few things I've read here, the immediate start is so terrible, with a disorienting and overwhelming fight overlaid with an exposition dump (Platinum apparently loves doing this, I recall one horrible example halfway through Wonderful 101). The cutscenes are too drawn out and rarely funny. Bayonetta herself is totally fine. She's sexy without feeling sexualized, if that makes sense.

I've played a few chapters, and so far I feel like the combat is one-dimensional, and that one dimension is Witch Time. I feel like I'm just mashing punch/kick until I notice an enemy is about to strike. Then I hit dodge and...mash punch/kick more. You have so many potential combos available at the start, and the game just sorta tells you about light/heavy attacks, so maybe it just expects you to experiment with how things work and figure out what you like. And I'm still not totally sure how Torture Attacks or Wicked Weaves work, and if they use the magic meter, but admittedly the game probably explained that and I wasn't paying enough attention.

But yeah, so far it's good. I actually mostly got Platinum and Gold medals and trophies until the part I just finished, where I got owned by QTEs and bosses that were kind of hard to read and got my first Shameful Italian rankings.

@nate38

Is there anything worse than a Shameful Italian? The eternal question.

Glad you finally got going on this! I think you'll be in for a treat when you make the hop to 2, but you're a good man for trudging through the first one. It may as well be a "tutorial" for the next game, because a) I don't really think you get one there and b) you'll hit the ground running so hard it'll rock.

Yes, there are combos. I can't remember what I used a lot, but I often had HUGE FISTS and HUGE FEET doing all kinds of things. You'll find something you like and go with it. And yeah, there is a lot of mashing, but the game is meant to be like that, I think? Mostly mindless. So Witch Time, you're not a fan? Loved that, so satisfying to get it and then do some serious damage while they're all slowed down. Dig it!

Torture Attacks; I think there are certain attacks that work on certain types of enemies. Its probably in the 2nd game, but you're fighting these Centaur like guys, and a down kick attack will put them into the ground, and it opens up their heiny for a ripe spanking. Otherwise, I think you just beat the crap out of guys? I can't remember about magic meter usage for your other attacks, I think only when she summons huge beasts or whatever it uses the meter? I'm sorry, this may TOTALLY be incorrect. From the sounds of your medal count though, it appears that you've got things in order. How do you like those Challenge Rooms? Nephelheim? I can't remember the names..
02/11/16, 01:12
Done! I liked it when it was good. I hated it when it was bad. I'll take a break before playing the second one and hoping there's more good and less bad.

@Mr_Mustache I don't think I found any challenge rooms after the one I found in like the first level. I guess I kinda stopped exploring for the most part, though.
02/14/16, 04:55
@nate38

What is good? What is bad? I definitely liked it better across the board, and the boost in graphics alone will make the game feel so much CLEANER. The play control felt better to me, too; might be my imagination though.

No on the challenge rooms? Bummer. I think they're easier to stumble across in 2. Do you pay attention to the Verse # at all? I really like that, because if you do Verse 4 and then Verse 6, you'll know that you missed something between where you just were and where you are now. Neat!
