Late to the party!
A friend loaned me this game earlier this week, and I cracked it open. To quickly echo a few things I've read here, the immediate start is so terrible, with a disorienting and overwhelming fight overlaid with an exposition dump (Platinum apparently loves doing this, I recall one horrible example halfway through Wonderful 101). The cutscenes are too drawn out and rarely funny. Bayonetta herself is totally fine. She's sexy without feeling sexualized, if that makes sense.
I've played a few chapters, and so far I feel like the combat is one-dimensional, and that one dimension is Witch Time. I feel like I'm just mashing punch/kick until I notice an enemy is about to strike. Then I hit dodge and...mash punch/kick more. You have so many potential combos available at the start, and the game just sorta tells you about light/heavy attacks, so maybe it just expects you to experiment with how things work and figure out what you like. And I'm still not totally sure how Torture Attacks or Wicked Weaves work, and if they use the magic meter, but admittedly the game probably explained that and I wasn't paying enough attention.
But yeah, so far it's good. I actually mostly got Platinum and Gold medals and trophies until the part I just finished, where I got owned by QTEs and bosses that were kind of hard to read and got my first Shameful Italian rankings. |

@nate38Is there anything worse than a Shameful Italian? The eternal question. Glad you finally got going on this! I think you'll be in for a treat when you make the hop to 2, but you're a good man for trudging through the first one. It may as well be a "tutorial" for the next game, because a) I don't really think you get one there and b) you'll hit the ground running so hard it'll rock. Yes, there are combos. I can't remember what I used a lot, but I often had HUGE FISTS and HUGE FEET doing all kinds of things. You'll find something you like and go with it. And yeah, there is a lot of mashing, but the game is meant to be like that, I think? Mostly mindless. So Witch Time, you're not a fan? Loved that, so satisfying to get it and then do some serious damage while they're all slowed down. Dig it! Torture Attacks; I think there are certain attacks that work on certain types of enemies. Its probably in the 2nd game, but you're fighting these Centaur like guys, and a down kick attack will put them into the ground, and it opens up their heiny for a ripe spanking. Otherwise, I think you just beat the crap out of guys? I can't remember about magic meter usage for your other attacks, I think only when she summons huge beasts or whatever it uses the meter? I'm sorry, this may TOTALLY be incorrect. From the sounds of your medal count though, it appears that you've got things in order. How do you like those Challenge Rooms? Nephelheim? I can't remember the names.. |
