I did Chapter IX twice tonight, the second time took me an hour and 23 minutes (apparently) because I spent about an hour and change trying to beat the Alfheim part there. Good Lord. I finally did it, but holy cow. After that, haha, I was TEARING through the normal guys. I guess I just needed like an intense hour to warm up. Side effect: I earned an S-load of halos! I'm up over 60k now; Bayonetta vets, is there something in the 100k range that I should DEFINITELY be buying ASAP? I've just been doing 30k Hearts and 5k shots (generally), though I did buy a new costume (woo, chaps!) and a few moves. (I CAN'T GET THE STUPID BAT THING TO WORK. YOU'LL SEE.)

@Guillaume

That little Italian guy is spot on accurate to all of the little Italian guys around the world. I actually thought Joe Pesci was voicing him. Legit.

@TriforceBun

I can guarantee I'm well behind you in terms of religiousness, but yeah, it makes me feel uncomfortable, too. I played for a while tonight, encountered some new enemies filling up my books and yeah.. (The Big Guy is Jubelius though, right? Which..as far as I know..isn't a codename for God as we know Him in our plane of existence..though Bayonetta earlier said "Jesus...what happened?" or something to that extent, and a voice chimed in and said "I'm watching over you child," or something. I didn't really think about that until now. Was that Jesus talking?) This isn't the first time we've had this "bad religious" stuff though, right? Isn't there always some element of "evil" religious stuff lurking around? There was some pretty heavy Church stuff in Eternal Darkness, right? Even Billy Joel is singing about only the Good dying young (and not having any fun), etc.

After eleven or so hours, I've completed the main game on Normal.

To be fair, I didn't try hard to do everything, and I have more stone statues than I care to admit (though many were from quicktime event fails, boooo).

I have to say, the amount of references to previous Capcom games, and SEGA games was pretty fun, particularly the Space Harrier inspired level!

I will be spending more time with the sequel, looking harder for secrets and whatnot.
I'm pretty darn excited!

By "Bat Thing" do you mean the move where you turn into bats when you dodge to avoid getting hit? It's not so much a move as it is an extra bit of time to activate witch time. Instead of dodging right before getting hit (the regular way to activate witch time), you dodge right as you get hit. It's pretty much required IMO.

@ploot

Ah cool. I'm over 11 hours, but I've been scouring pretty hard. I figured I'd give this game a hard ride as I'll probably never be back to it with Bayonetta 2 on the scene already, know what I mean? Stone Statues are a tough thing to swallow. I wish that you could use Items (besides healing lollipops) without penalty. Seems..counter productive? Why would I make something if I'm going to be penalized?

@gojira

Yes, that's the Bat Thing. Now, there is a Try Before You Buy deal, and I just CAN'T get it to work. I figure if I can't get it to work in the fake part, how in the world am I going to get it to trigger out in the real world? I'd looove to have it work, man. Trust me!

In relation to the little rose that pops up, how are you supposed to hit it then? I figure you want to hit it right then, no?

@Mr_Mustache
I couldn't help myself. I REALLY wanted to get to Bayonetta 2! And boy, is it GOOOOOOOD.

@TriforceBun
I missed this for some reason.
Don't worry about the angel-killing stuff. The game uses Biblical names and such, but it's not Christianity really. You won't be facing off with God or anything.
10/31/14, 06:12
@Mr_Mustache

It's been awhile since I've seen that part of the game. I only played the prologue on the Wii U version and I don't remember a rose being in Bayonetta 2. You never would want it to work in the real world because ideally you would have dodged the attack. But if you really want to get it to work I would suggest hitting the dodge button a split second after you would normally.

I find it invaluable personally. I think you may still get some damage, but it changes a definite blow into at least lesser damage and witch time. When you're fighting 3+ enemies or learning new enemies' patterns it'll come in use.

Honestly I forget about most of the techniques I've purchased, but that one gets used a lot because you don't need to activate it. It just happens.

@gojira

Yeah, maybe I'll just get it and it'll "accidentally" start working. Right?

I'm so close to 100k though, I want to buy a gamechanger!
10/31/14, 07:40
Thanks for the feedback, guys. Interestingly, this game has gotten me to brush up on my faith a little bit more, so that's kind of interesting. I've pretty much come to the same conclusion that @ploot mentioned--there are elements inspired by Christian (and other religions') imagery, but when you come down to it, it's an original, fictional story by Platinum and not the traditional approach to Christianity by any means. I'm still a little weirded out occasionally, but I feel better than I did a few days ago.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the combat, though. Right now, I'm kind of stuck in the first of those little side-challenge rooms (forgot the name). I'm supposed to beat all the enemies in time with Witch Time disabled, and I'm having a heck of a time getting it done quickly enough. I don't understand how the magic meter works in this game--can I only do Torture Attacks when it's full? If so, what's the point of getting a longer magic meter bar if I can't activate it for longer? What's the best way to kill the final enemy in this room (the quadruped beast thing)? I can usually have one Torture Attack ready for it, but its defense is so high otherwise against my punches and kicks that I can never seem to kill it in time. How do I get better at combat??

@Mr_Mustache

Like I said, I always felt there weren't too many must buys. So I checked online and it seems that Air Dodge and Bat Within both come highly recommended. Also Stiletto is often mentioned (I like that one too).

The closest thing to a gamechanger I can find is the Moon of Mahaa-Kalaa. It's a parry move and sounds quite difficult to use. But I guess it has big benefits. You can actually use it without buying it if you wear the Link outfit.

@TriforceBun

The extra magic orbs you get extend the amount of your magic, but not the threshold to when you can execute a torture attack. There are other uses for magic. And those deplete your meter so it makes sense to want a longer bar.

That's the right way to view it, in my opinion. It's like when a lot of Christians were boycotting Harry Potter because of its imagery of magic and such...really? Our pastor (an SBC fellowship, so you know we're conservative) has read them all and enjoys them. It's fiction, not real. As long as we go into the story knowing that, I think we can all enjoy most, if not all, video game stories.

@TriforceBun

Alfheim. The 6 punches, 7 kicks one? I had to tap out on that one. I've done the other ones I've found though...and they've each taken me well over an hour to do. When you come to the one in Chapter X, might I suggest XX-A. Good Lord.

@gojira

I bought the Bat Dodge, and like I thought (and you inferred), my delay on some of those freakin' fast jerks where I would've got hit is working out just fine. Bats have triggered well beyond what I thought they would, and I didn't know that WITCH TIME would be activated as well? Thumbs up!
10/31/14, 20:36
After a long stretch of Stone Assholes, I actually managed a Bronze and Gold Statue on Chapters XII and XIII! Rock it.

And yeah, Bats is definitely a big help. I bought the Navajo Healing Bracelet Thing, too. I've been taunting here and there, getting little boosts. And you know, using the LITTLE items (not MEGA) doesn't hurt you too much on the bottom line, it seems. Could be a good way to get ahead here and there, way better than getting CRUSHED constantly. 3rd fight with Jeanne was TOUGH. I got whipped the first time, and the 2nd time back, holy cow, I was rockin' her.

Boss Fights in this game are nasty. Definitely feels a lot like Ninja Gaiden: Razor's Edge sometimes.

I got my copy Monday afternoon and a few hours later I suddenly came down with a vertigo like feeling. I cannot say if it had anything to do with the game but it isn't a great combination with this game I can tell you what.
11/01/14, 16:14
I had the game on the 360 but only made it to chapter 3 or 4. I started playing the Wii U version on Saturday and marathoned it in one day. Crazy game. I played a bit of the second on Sunday. I'm off work until the 12th, so I'm hoping to get through it during that time.
11/01/14, 17:10
The boss fights are crazy. And all the false finishes too. I thought I was done with the game 3 or 4 different times before the end finally came for real.
11/01/14, 17:11
@Mr_Mustache

All I have are Stones. Maybe one Bronze. I get great individual scores but I get penalized for using items and dieing. And many of my deaths are stupid QUICK PRESS THIS BUTTON RIGHT NOW, aww... too late. I'm so happy there's nothing like that in the second game.
11/01/14, 18:06
@gojira
Yeah, a pretty high percentage of my deaths were from failing QTEs. It annoyed me quite a bit.
11/01/14, 19:04
Failing QTEs should result in little more than a loss of some health, a slight knock on your score, and an embarrassing cutscene of Bayonetta clumsily messing up and getting hurt... like Ryo getting hit in the face with a soccer ball. Hey, mister, let's play soccer!

Picked this game up on Friday. I don't plan to sink my teeth in until the semester ends, but I did play an hour just to make sure I hadn't made some terrible mistake =) So far, it's about what I expected. The things that looked cool are cool and that the things that I thought would turn me off are turning me off. One thing that I was not aware of was how anime-esque some of the presentation was. Even in the first hour there was a shot or two that reminded me of Sailor Moon in some twisted kind of way. So that's a pleasant surprise.

Now that I've finally experienced (a very small slice) of the combat first hand I can say that it feels pretty good and I'm looking forward to getting comfortable with it.

There have also been a few things that, based on what past/current students said about the game, have made me smile and/or roll my eyes -- so that's been cool too.

I'll try to report back once I'm really in the thick of the game!

@TriforceBun

Yea, first I went to my mom+pop game shop. The clerk didn't even think the game was out yet. They had zero copies.

Then I went to the Gamestop at the other end of the mall. The clerks didn't even think the game was out yet. They had ONE copy and it was the "floor model" so to speak. Open box, separate discs and such. I told them I would pass on their classic Gamestop-y shadiness. They were very understanding about that.

Then I went to a Gamestop about a mile down the road. The clerk was aware of the game and said she loved the first one! They had ONE copy and she sold it to me.

So, overall my shopping experience was classic 3rd party Nintendo. No awareness, no concern, severely limited purchase opportunity. *sigh* But as far as what's in the box, my hat is off to the devs and pubs for including the first game (on disc!) and working with Nintendo for the sequel. That is a 3rd party Nintendo dream come true as far as I'm concerned.

@chrisbg99

There was a stage (a later Chapter, like XII or XIII) where you're in some spinning room, and you can see the outside, so you KNOW you're spinning. Its probably the most disoriented I've felt in a game, so long as I can remember. Never had that feeling with Mario Galaxy, but this one I felt like, I was there, and I wanted to lay down on the floor or something. It wasn't super-fun!
