Top 10 Favorite Things I Learned In Today's Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Nintendo Direct [top ten]

Since the moment that Nintendo announced having a special event for Super Smash Bros. Wii U, I knew I wanted to do a special article or 'something' for it. When they said it was a "50-Things" type Nintendo Direct, it felt right to pick my 10 favorite things and post about them in this manner. The list is indeed a general order of preference but really, I liked everything this Nintendo Direct had to say. I could probably write a small paragraph on each and every item stating what I think but alas I've chosen ten things and guesstimated my preference order the best I could, even whereas some may be 'equal' more or less. For those interested in checking out the Nintendo Direct directly... /pun... you can do so below.

Now please enjoy this write-up.

Trophies and the Trophy Box
The Super Smash Bros. series has always been ideally based around toys and/or trophy-like toys which 'come to life' and fight for your sick and twisted pleasures. Collecting these trophies have always been such a highlight of the series. From the model designs to the descriptions of each one... they're some of the best collectibles video games have ever offered. The 3DS version has some clever and informative descriptions for example. There is reason to believe that the Wii U one will also be written by the same team. I can't wait. Just check out this awesome K.K. Slider Trophy!

The Nintendo Direct announced the Trophy Box which allows you to not only group trophies by specific categories but it presents them in a way that will help a gamer understand where they're missing something. Completing a box of Super Mario trophies will feel good and not knowing what will fill the holes you're missing leaves even more anticipation than ever before!

Mewtwo as Free DLC
Mewtwo has never been a character I utterly missed from Super Smash Bros. Melee... but I definitely starting turning a new leaf after playing some more Melee recently. Of all missing Melee characters, having Mewtwo back would actually make the most sense. Nintendo surprised us all by announcing Mewtwo's return in the upcoming Smash Bros. Not only will Mewtwo be in the Wii U version but it'll also be in the 3DS version! In fact, to get it, you need to have both versions! Then and only then... (probably not) will you unlock this coveted character. It's a heck of a way to incentivize some folks who may not yet have taken the 3DS plunge. To me this wreaks of a DLC future for Super Smash Bros. At the very least I'm sure they'll offer Mewtwo as a purchasable DLC for non-3DS owners. Coming soon... Spring 2015.

Stamina Battles
Simple as this... I've wanted these back and their omission in Super Smash Bros. 3DS was disappointing. Technically I guess fighting the Master Hand is a stamina match but not quite. Welcome back old friend.

Smash Tour
While the thunder of this mode was spoiled by the Amazon leak from earlier this week, Smash Tour was still quite interesting and impressive. As Super Smash Bros. Wii U's signature special mode, you're put in what looks akin to a Mario Party board game map and you traverse the pathways collecting all sorts of loot. You collect characters if you're the first to pass by them. You collect power ups to super charge your fights. When your Mii finally crosses the path of another Mii, it's time for everyone to fight with the stuff they've collected. These battles can be randomly unique like in Smash Run. Perhaps you'll find a standard smash or perhaps a lip's stick only battle. If you've collected multiple Smash Fighters, you'll use them in the order of collection. Be careful as you could potentially have your characters stolen by other players! Up to 4 players at once in this mode. At the end you'll play a final standard battle with all that you collected... who will be victorious!

Paint Mode
In this game you're able to take plenty of cool unique screenshots. For the creative types out there, you can now manipulate those screenshots Miiverse or Art Academy-style! The potential is infinite! Miiverse artists 'fludd' Nintendo's special forums with awesome art on a daily basis, but now they'll be able to use their skills for fun and interesting modifications to screenshots! The potential is so great here. Do something funny, do something unexpected... just do SOMETHING! And soon enough, when some apparent kinks are worked out, send it to your friends and post it on Miiverse! Very cool surprise. A bonus to something that didn't really need it, but I'm glad it's happened.

Event Mode
Event Mode was a pretty cool addition to the Super Smash Bros. series back in Melee. Brawl took it slightly further but not quite that far. Not that it needs to be even. It's a pretty basic mode presenting unique challenges for you to complete in order to unlock new ones. This time around however, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U has decided to make things a bit more non-linear. You can play the mode with two players but depending on if you have a friend or not, the map will be completely different. Also, depending on the difficulty level, you may find yourself unlocking new paths!

The Challenge Wall
Simply put, this is an expanded version of the ones found in the 3DS. While the 3DS has three pages of 35 challenges, the Wii U features a whopping 140 challenges and all on one page! The single-page setup allows for constant clues to new challenges. On the 3DS you have to complete each page separately and hammers are allotted for each. Here there's five total hammers which means to fully open this you'll need to complete 135 flawlessly.

Good luck...

Special Orders Mode
Special Orders Mode was also somewhat spoiled recently but it was great getting the final exposing of the mode today.

First you'll find what's known as Master Orders. Here you'll battle specific challenges based off of tickets. Harder the ticket, the greater the reward. Looks like a lot of fun and it's just another way to enjoy unlocking and collecting.

Next there's Crazy Orders. This is where you battle continually, racking up the awesome items, but be careful... if you fail you lose it all... and to keep everything you need to end the mode with a battle between yourself and Crazy Hand! Good luck!

Tons of Music
The second to last point in the list is a simple one. Music. There's tons of it! The Wii U version includes almost all the music from the 3DS version and then some... like many times more than it!

Anyone who knows me understands that music is one of my favorite things about not just this series but video games in general. I am beyond hyped to hear all the fantastic tracks in this game. It's going to be awesome.

Here's one of my favorite samples from the Super Smash Bros. Website Music Page.

New Stages
My absolutely favorite thing that this Nintendo Direct showcased for me was the new stages. We've probably seen most if not all of these already but it was so great seeing them all once more in beautiful HD. On the next episode of the Negative World Podcast, currently in editing, I mention how disappointing it was that the 3DS edition does not feature an all new stage for franchises like Pikmin or Sonic. I want to see more because so many franchises earn great representation and frankly I'm a little sick of some of these stages, even if I like them anyway. My wishes are certainly granted and I get to play them in mere weeks! Here are some of my favorites...

Windy Hill Zone

Garden of Hope

Jungle Hijinxs

That last one is a very unique level with some new gimmicks never seen before in the franchise. Plus it plays as a great homage to it's source material. They all do!

Honorable Mention

Stage Builder is back! Gone are the days of simple blocky assets on a grid... now with the power of the Wii U Gamepad you can free-hand draw whatever you want! Apply different skins! Use assets anyway! It's going to blow the lid off of stage building and creation. They've just really stepped up their game.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well that's all for this feature! I hope you all enjoyed the read and will continue to comment or even make your own Top 10 lists! In just a few weeks we'll all be playing this awesome game. I have a strong feeling this will be the Thanksgiving of Smash Bros for us USA Negative Worlders. I'll end this by reminding everyone to be sure and register your Smash games so you can get that very cool 2-disc CD set of some of the best music this game has to offer. Each CD holds 36 songs! That's a whopping 72 tracks! WHOA! Though it makes me wonder... as Brawl had damn near 300 or more... I wonder...

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

Wow, 8 player Smash didn't even make the list? That was definitely the biggest game changer for me, even though I probably won't get to play it often.

Exactly why it didn't make the list. It wont be used possibly ever for me. I love the concept and am happy for it's inclusion but it's not a big thing for me personally.

Between my girlfriend, nephews, and brother-in-law, I might be able to pull off a five or six player match someday but that'll really need some stars to align.

@DrFinkelstein

Yea, understood, but to me it shows that Nintendo is still thinking big with this franchise.

Great idea for a top ten! I too enjoyed this presentation quite a bit, especially since I sort of expected a bunch of these things to be filler. But it was constantly entertaining and hype-building.

For my own list, I'd have to add Stage Builder in there somewhere...and Item Frequency settings! Two things I missed from the 3DS version, and the tweaks to Stage Builder look great.

Two players can go online together in For Fun. Wooooo

Forgot about this. Fantastic.

Wait where is 8 player smash
10/24/14, 06:39
I don't know if I'm feeling the large levels. They were just a complete waste in Brawl IMO. Even with the after resolution it sounds like a mess.
10/24/14, 08:43
8 player Smashhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

@PogueSquadron

What from the Nintendo Direct are you feeling?
10/24/14, 13:05
Event Mode making a return is huge for me. I was really disappointed it wasn't in the 3DS version (and if it is, I still haven't found it yet).
10/24/14, 16:11
@PogueSquadron

I don't need a ton of them, but the occasional fight on Temple is a blast. Will be even more fun with 8 players.
10/24/14, 19:05
Temple was my favorite stage in Melee. Likely won't get much use out of 8-player these days but it might be fun if I ever get the chance. They also confirmed it remains 1080p/60fps even in 8-player matches.

Paint mode really looked awesome, but I can't do shit with it.

The Miiverse stage also seemed like an interesting concept.

Oh man, the Miiverse stage sounds so f'n cool! I will LOVE to see those messages cheering me on!

Top ten for me in random order:

8 player smash
2 player online, 2 player classic, 2 player EVERYTHING!
tons more music and my music
smash tour
little ending videos
stage builder
sharing replays online
Miiverse stage
event matches
master/crazy hand challenges

10. I liked collecting trophies in Melee but didn't care about them in Brawl. The novelty of them may have already worn off for me, but we'll see how it goes in this new game.

9. I don't care about Mewtwo but it's still good to know that DLC is a real possibility. It does feel odd to be thinking about extra content before the game is even out, but still, it's nice to know that the things I wanted which aren't in the game, might be available sometime later.

8. I've never cared about this mode before since it's more like a regular fighter, so I doubt I'll care now. I wonder if you can change the health amount this time.

7. Smash Tour looks pretty simple but still fun. Seems like a similar concept to Smash Run executed in a different way. I hope it isn't too random.

6. I'll never use paint mode meself, but it'll be interesting to see what others come up with. I expect to see lots of phallic imagery.

5. The more fleshed out event mode does look interesting.

4. Looks pretty much like Brawl and other challenge walls in Sakurai games. Nothing exciting.

3. I still don't quite get how this mode works, but it still sounds like it could be good.

2. I've liked the couple of remixes that I've come across so far, so I'm looking forward to see if there are any more good tunes in the game. Not something I'd have in my own number two though.

1. A good number one, stages are pretty important!
10/24/14, 20:37
I know some people are upset that Mewtwo will only be available to people who purchase both visions of smash 4 but if you look at it another way, this will mean that Mewtwo is that special charter that only a few people have and as a result he will be prized like certain Pokemon. (Manaphy, Jacuri, Deyoxes, [the spelling might be wrong sorry])
What are your opinions?
10/27/14, 11:05
10. 2-player modes because while this is awesome, I won't get to play them much...

9. Kid Icarus Uprising and Star Fox chats because these were fun in Brawl with Snake and will only be better with Pit, Palutena, Viridi, and company.

8. Miiverse Stage because Miiverse art is wonderful, and the Battlefield layout of the stage is a classic for a reason.

7. Photo Studio because Miiverse art is wonderful and people are going to make amazing Smash pics with this.

6. Online tourneys because it looks like Nintendo will be hosting themed tourneys and letting us set up our own. Hopefully the settings and administration are flexible.

5. Stage Builder because I'm totally cool with boring stages as long as the base layouts are neat, and now they can be shared! And hopefully played online, at least with friends.

4. Master / Crazy Orders because it looks like a more reliable way to grind for customizations. Custom special moves were one of the reasons I was really excited for the new Smash, but the fact that you have to unlock them all totally sucks, doubly so when the fastest way to get them is grinding through Classic mode and you can't get them in Versus (Smash) as far as I can tell.

3. Event Mode because I missed it in the 3DS version, love these weird little setups that encourage you to try new things

2. Mewtwo is playable because Mewtwo is cool and it means there's a pretty good shot of more DLC

1. Ridley isn't playable because Ridley sux lol
