New 3DS Firmware update! Menu themes, and enhanced performance!

Just in time for some Smash 3DS partyin', Nintendo rolled out some menu themes for the 3DS today in a big ol' update. The link to all the info is here, but the update also gives these upgrades to your system, according to ZeldaInformer:

-Users can now use themes to customize the design and sounds of the HOME Menu

-Five themes are pre-installed and additional themes can be purchased from the Theme Shop

-Themes can be changed by using settings located within the HOME Menu settings

-A feature has been added that allows users to capture screenshots of their HOME Menu

-The Nintendo eShop Title Information page has been updated to provide easier access to any available videos, demos, user reviews, and other information.

The only kinda bad news is that only five of the themes are free, and they're all pretty basic ones (basically just different colors). To get the fancy Link Between Worlds one, you've gotta shell out a couple of bucks.

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

Dished out the $2.15 (ugh) for the A Link Between Worlds one. It's nice. Background music is awesome, artwork scrolls, and that's about it. Matches my Zelda 3DS XL.

Themes are something where it would make sense to use coins instead of real money to buy them. But of course not.

It has music!?

I might have to splurge on this too (although I must echo your "ugh").

But no Smash theme yet?

Annnnd there's Isabelle again. Nintendo's really pushing this character, aren't they?

But the New 3DS isn't even out yet!

I'd never pay money for a theme but I might get one from Club Nintendo if ever they were offered.

Wait, so the Theme Shop is separate from the eShop?

Theme Shop is its own button at the top left (like on the same level as the notifications). It still ties into your eShop wallet.

Every theme has it's own music, I believe. One of the Mario ones had the Secret Level music from Mario Sunshine as the background. It tells you up front if the image scrolls and what the music is (though I don't think you can test it).

Hyrule Field theme is just my major weakness in life.

Kinda, although it uses the same money and stuff. You access it in the new Theme Menu where you'd normally change the system's brightness.

I picked up the Hanafuda theme and I'm liking it. My only gripe is that we don't get a preview of the music that comes along with the visuals.

This is a pretty big update!

I suppose I should take a breather from Smash... For a bit.

I'm doing the same thing. I thought the themes were only for the new 3DS models. Glad they're coming to the current ones too.

@TeamBrian1020

I wonder if this update also increases download speeds like they showed off in the New 3DS Direct. I would think faster downloads wouldn't be restricted to your handheld but more of a server side upgrade.

I was all set to download the Animal Crossing theme as shown during the themes intro after the update, only to find it unavailable. Boo! Hopefully it'll be made available soon, as it'll coordinate swimmingly with my Animal Crossing 3DS.

@Abdooooo

I was looking at the Hanafuda one myself and read something I hadn't a clue about... Nintendo's former name was, Marufuku. Crazy that I just now found out about this! I suppose this was its original/early name when it was in the hanafuda card game business. I just naively assumed it was Nintendo from the beginning. Duh me.

@NoName

Huh, I didn't know that either! Thanks for informing me.

@Abdooooo it can be a hardware. I believe, don't quote me on this, that the CPU handles downloads in terms of directing incoming data to it's apropriate location and that the CPU can only handle up to a certain threshold of data before it can't take anymore.

You are all welcome.

Like the idea of themes, but I don't think I care enough to spend money on them. These should definitely be Club Nintendo coins we're spending for them.

Well, I don't like any of the free themes enough to make a change and I'm not going to spend money on them, but programs seem to close noticeably faster so good update!

If they did custom themes like on the PS3 that'd be awesome. I've had the same one on my PS3 for several years now.

I actually coughed up 20 SEK to get the Hanafuda theme because I'm a sucker for that type of artwork and I had some cash left on my eShop account. It's pretty, and the new music and sound effects are really sweet, but I bet it will feel pretty busy after a while. Still, so far so good! The zippier transitions between games and the home menu is very welcome too. Good update.

@Abdooooo
Yes! Music previews should become standard for this sort of thing, 'cause it would suck to pay for a pretty looking theme only to find out it has a soundtrack that sounds like cows in a slaughter house.

I'm sure themes will be offered as rewards on club Nintendo, so I'll wait it out. Though I'm really tempted to get the Luigi theme since they didn't include a default green-coloured theme.
