Through all the stories and all the timelines found in the Zelda series... nobody saw this coming. Koei Tecmo and Nintendo team up to take the Dynasty Warriors formula, toss in a lot of Zelda-franchise fan service, and blend that stuff together in a funky mish-mash of Zelda lore that only the Wind Fish could dream up. That game is called Hyrule Warriors.

I was admittedly hesitant on this title upon first announcement. I had no idea what the Dynasty Warriors franchise was all about. I knew I loved Zelda. It wasn't until the excellent Nintendo Direct (embedded below) which sold me on the idea. I'm seeing a lot of reviews, which started coming in today, and they seem to agree that this isn't much of a Zelda game. I have to point out, the name borrows the Warriors from Dynasty Warriors and not Zelda. This alone helps me see what Koei Tecmo and Nintendo were aiming for. This isn't going to be a Zelda main-line game nor is it striving to be. For what it's goals are, and for what Nintendo has contributed to it, I'm pretty excited myself and now there's less than 10 days remaining. The game releases on September 26th, 2014.

Fun Facts
1.) Sends Link and 12 other playable characters from various Zelda universes into other universes. Mixing things up!
2.) Loaded with various locales, enemies, bosses, items, and music from throughout the Legend of Zelda series.
3.) Series offers plenty of DLC options (detailed below).
4.) Tons of combos and special moves for each character.
5.) 2-player Co-Op (though I hear it's pretty hard on the Wii U processing)
6.) Unique 'Adventure Mode' taking players back into the NES' The Legend of Zelda for a mix of challenges and adventure! (at least on the map)

Played late last night! A good few hours in now and I'm addicted.

I can't say whether my enthusiasm will last beyond the story (Legend) mode but I'm already enjoying a lot of the side modes and challenges, which is a good sign.

I've gone to Target three times just to play the demo. I can't wait for this.

I put this image together to easily express what DLC is planned right now for Hyrule Warriors.

09/20/14, 21:40
@DrFinkelstein Nah, I don't think Nintendo have much to do with it, this is apparently Tecmo/Koei's MO. Even if what you say is true, I certainly don't want to support the idea of "We MUST release this game by so-and-so date, whether it is finished or not! And if we don't complete it, we'll just sell the remaining pieces as DLC! MWA HA HA!"
09/21/14, 02:13
@Mop it up

I don't believe that was the case either. I don't think anyone aims to sell any portion of an incomplete game as DLC. That's the point I'm trying to make. If Hyrule Warriors was lax on content, I'd be bitching about this even. All signs show that isn't the case. This is all icing. Fair enough, I say.

The day anyone on a Nintendo console delivers a light but full-priced experience and then a slew of DLC to even it out to a 'normal' level, that's the day I turn on DLC. Nintendo has seemed to handle it pretty well so far.

I'm not trying to change minds or anything though. Just rebuttal-ing.
09/21/14, 03:00
@DrFinkelstein It seems to have a bit less content than other recent Warriors games, it doesn't even have an online mode. But what constitutes enough content seems to be a pretty subjective concept, so we'll have to agree to disagree when it comes to that.

@Mop it up

What would make the game complete for you?
09/21/14, 03:11
@DrFinkelstein It isn't about being complete. Any game that runs without crashing or major bugs is technically a complete game. It's more about the level of effort. Imagine, if you would, that the new Smash Brothers game had ten less characters and ten less stages than it currently does, and those ten extra characters and stages were sold as DLC a month later. I'd bet that many people would still say there's enough content in the game as is, so they'd be okay with having the rest as DLC.

The issue is that selling DLC like this allows companies to just put in the minimum level of effort to still have a competent game, but then don't have any incentive to go that extra mile to make that game something special. The extra mile is instead pieced off and sold as DLC. That's my issue with this, it just encourages bad habits and lessons the overall value put into games.

@Mop it up

I appreciate the response. Is there any conditions where you feel DLC is a valid thing for a game developer to include?

I think the argument really can go both ways on all points. I'll finish my thoughts just by reiterating that I don't feel I've seen bad habits and lessons in Nintendo games relating to DLC or value linked to it. Mario Kart 8, Hyrule Warriors, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Pikmin 3, Mario Golf World Tour... that's my two cents.

@DrFinkelstein How about my Smash Brothers example, do you think you'd feel okay with that as well?

There have been three Nintendo examples that I've been okay with, which are NSMBU, Mario Kart 8, and Pikmin 3. In my view, NSMBU is the best game in the NSMB series and feels like plenty of care went into level design, so I'm okay with NSLU which is almost a different game in itself. Pikmin 3 also feels like a game that they put a lot of time and effort into, and went the extra mile with things like the mission mode and bingo battle. The extra missions they sell as DLC have a decent price and seem like something they may have thought up after release. As for Mario Kart 8... well, I actually do feel this game is a bit incomplete and unpolished, since it's missing battle arenas and some features from previous games, but, the actual DLC itself is reasonably priced for the content and packaged in a good way.

The rest of Nintendo DLC is either overpriced or frivolous.

Value is another subjective concept so I know that people have different perceptions on what they feel is a good value.

@Mop it up

Since Brawl had even less characters and levels and content than the Wii U/3DS after subtracting the 10 you mentioned, I might be okay with that. It's too late now knowing that there's xx amount of characters.

Indeed. That's why I'm trying not to push my POV on you or anyone else. I would love all DLC to just plain exist in the game from the beginning but I don't believe we'd get any of it then. I would love to read some developer commentary on DLC and how they justify it in their games. Do you know of any articles or blogs or anything where we've heard it from the horse's mouth?
09/21/14, 03:51
@DrFinkelstein I'm sure there's some talk about it in some of the Iwata Asks, those are usually pretty in-depth and they don't usually try to hide or suger-coat something. It isn't something I've been looking into lately though, as all it does is frustrate me.

I know that in some examples it would require delaying a game, but, I'm okay with that. I'm patient. Besides, I believe it was Miyamoto himself who said "A delayed game is eventually good, a rushed game is rushed forever."

Someone in today's industry would probably say "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rush game could be released sooner and the rest sold as DLC later."
09/21/14, 04:06
@Mop it up

I really don't think that you can say definitively that your last quote is an actual belief of the industry right now, not Iwata at least. I'll have to do some digging in Iwata Asks articles and see if I can find anything. The fact that people like Miyamoto exist within Nintendo's quarters is why I'm not nearly as concerned about Nintendo DLC as anyone else's.

Speaking on Iwata Asks, I A.) would have loved one for Hyrule Warriors, and B.) are they even doing them anymore?
09/21/14, 04:14
@DrFinkelstein Yeah, I didn't mean the second quote as something Nintendo would say, that's more like EA, CapCom, or Ubisoft, probably. It was more intended as a tongue-in-cheek thing so it wasn't meant to be completely accurate. Though I worry what might happen to Nintendo once all of the longtime staff retire/pass away, I'm not sure if a younger generation will have the same values and beliefs.

I'm not sure if IwataAsks still happen, I just checked and I didn't see any for games released this year, such as Mario Kart 8. For a previous one, I felt the one for Zelda Link Between Worlds was pretty interesting to see how the ideas evolved.

Just to let anyone know (who read my post earlier) I use reviews to get a ruff estimate
of how good a game is I personal give games different reviews to what most others give
games, so please don't judge me. I will not post stuff like that again if it pleases the group.

".....I will not post stuff like that again if it pleases the group."

@Sormon

This is not some cult club/collective here - None of us are judging you for anything. Welcome to the boards.

In relation to your posts on this thread, I think it's safe to say that most of us do use reviews as a rough guide for a games quality. It's just wise to listen to other opinions (ie reviews) and not just rely on one.

We all have different tastes in games but we show up here because we enjoy them. Post whatever comes to your mind - as long as it's respectful of others.

Even without DLC I think most games tend to have a ton of content compared to older games.

I feel like I'd be down to play this if the price is right. It's just not something I'm rushing out to get. I know it would be one of those "pleasant surprise" type games though.
09/22/14, 08:29
@Sormon

Sormon, I use reviews as well! My comment was solely on the presumption that you had only read IGN's at that point and were making a decision off that. IGN doesn't have the best history for Nintendo fans so I was hoping you'd look at other reviews and articles as well, not none at all.

Also, Smerd said it very nicely in his post. So keep on posting, here or in any threads!
