The one that comes with the bundle does not have a home button - it's just a straight up GCN controller. PDP will offer some that were announced at E3 to match the Mario themed Wii remotes that have released (and yet to release, such as the Yoshi one), that will have the home and +/- buttons. And then there are the two Hori is making that I am strongly considering, as they make awesome stuff, and they don't require the adapter (but sadly don't have finger cupping L/R buttons). However, I have four working GameCube controllers, plus the WaveBird, so I may just get the adapter only.

Yikes! Be gentle with your controllers, people!

I am gentle! It's Kid Icarus & Luigi's Mansion that were not

Looking forward to the new XL next year.

On a related note, I got that N64 PC adapter I mentioned in your other thread, and pulled out a shiny new 3rd party N64 controller to test it out. The stick is already wonky, right out of the packaging!

I love the N64 to death but, Jesus Christ those sticks were awful.

Game has apparently already sold over a million copies in Japan.

Awesome and unsurprising! Though isn't the 3DS not nearly as strong in Japan as it is here? Could this bode well for better numbers here in the Americas?

@DrFinkelstein

I think it's more strong in Japan. But the population is a lot smaller so it's still pretty good.

Third party controllers for the N64 were uniformly terrible, IIRC. The only controllers you should ever buy for that system are the official ones from Nintendo. Even though those do eventually wear down and break, too. Nintendo is usually really great with controller design, but the N64 design was a little hokey.

You're not totally right. I had two non-Nintendo N64 controllers, ones with like Auto-Fire on them and they weren't too shabby. Not the quality of Nintendo but Nintendo didn't have faceplates or the special powers.

Based on the control sticks of my Nintendo-brand controllers, the N64 controllers sucked in general. Loosey-goosey!

I'm not sure why this is happening in here, but, if you apply some ceramic grease to N64 control sticks, they won't get worn out. You can't repair any that are already ruined, but if you have any left in good shape, grease em up! If you use the controller regularly then reapply every year.

@Mop it up

Where were you in 1997!?!?
09/17/14, 02:58
@DrFinkelstein Too annoyed by the modem noise and line-hogging of dial-up to use the Internet.

@DrFinkelstein

Do you recall the brand of those controllers? The ones I had were crap.

@DrFinkelstein, @Mop it up

Oh wow...late 1990s-era internet. That brings back memories.

Not necessarily pleasant ones, but memories none the less.

Sure. You got a time machine so I can do that?

@GameDadGrant

I'll try to find out. They're around here somewhere.

I've been loving the demo so far. I've put almost as much time into the single-player stuff as I have the local multiplayer. (grrr, why can't this be online?!?) But I've been having a blast. Really helps to have buddies that have a 3DS and are willing to throw down in this game.

Now if only I could get them into Tekken....

@DrFinkelstein

Thanks, man! Don't bend over backwards to find the brand...I'm not buying another N64 anytime soon or anything. I was just curious.

This demo was a rude awakening. I knew I would be out of practice since I haven't been into Smash since the Cube days, but holy crap I suck. I suppose part of it is that I always played as Ness and that none of the characters available feel even the least bit like him. Maybe I shouldn't have tried the demo at all, and just waited for the full game to come out on Wii U.

@GameDadGrant

The controllers should be in a box somewhere very near. I'm mostly packed still from the move over the summer so I just don't know 'which' box.

Just had some good times with the demo. Plenty of button mashing with fairly satisfying results. Was literally squealing out loud with delight as I picked up a fireball sword and started knocking everyone out of sight!

Had so much fun with just the pause button. Miiverse will be ripe with hilariously-captioned pics at launch.

@r_hjort
Aren't you going to get the 3DS version? You were going to be my sparring partner.
09/19/14, 14:53
@Super_Conzo

Unfortunately my understanding is that Miiverse won't work for Smash Bros 3DS except on the New 3DS.
09/19/14, 15:05
@Super_Conzo
No, if I get any version it'll be the one for Wii U.
09/19/14, 15:05
@Jargon

Correct. This is actually one of the reasons I'm getting a New 3DS at launch.

@r_hjort

You'll eventually get the 3DS version though, yeah? I mean, I assume you will want to take advantage of the connectivity between the two versions. Plus, it'll be awesome. Don't deny yourself of awesomeness.
