Animal Crossing: New Leaf Review (Nintendo 3DS) (9.7)  by

Animal Crossing... I still remember getting up early before heading to my high school classes just to see what Tom Nook was selling that day. This game series has always held such a dear place in my heart. I think it has to do with the fact that heading to the land of Plaisant, Tranquil, or other towns of mine always being a great escape for me. Making Bells, filling my catalog, and fishing in the ocean were always points of peace for me. While I've been very public about my discontent with AC: City Folk, I have a new-found hope once more for New Leaf. From all the information that has been dished out due to the game's release already in Japan, and Nintendo pushing more information through Nintendo Directs, I am confident this game will be a fresh take on a classic and comforting idea.

The game released in North America on June 9th, 2013 and released in other territories shortly after.

Please use this thread for all discussion on the game. If you would like to make trades or visit towns, please use the specific Animal Crossing New Leaf Trading Thread for further assistance. It makes more sense to keep this focused on the gameplay and game discussion while leaving bartering out of it. There are no Friend Codes this time around for Animal Crossing, which is a blessing! Many of us have already befriended ourselves via the 3DS Friend Codes Thread thread. That thread will be where we continue to befriend each other and trade 3DS IDs for the sake of visiting each other's towns.

Many many years ago I discovered a wonderful Animal Crossing website which has a great catalog feature set up. Now, the new game will mean it'll take time for the site to get a full correct catalog up and running but I expect it to work beautifully once more to allow anyone to track their catalog there. You can find this website at the Animal Crossing Community page. They also have forums there which are very active right now in anticipation of this game. Granted, the general age of the members of that site fall a bit lower than here, but I've found over all the years I've been there that the discussion is still mostly pleasant and easy.

Lastly, I want you all to enjoy the music from this new game or any of the games, whenever you want. The following site will allow you to hear the "Xam" or "Xpm" music that would naturally occur in your life right now as if you were in the game. You can select from any of the Animal Crossing games and the music will continually loop until the hour changes. It's pretty cool. You can find that page here. It's by default at the City Folk music.

So again, everyone enjoy this game! Enjoy this discussion! If you're interested in being negative about the title, just find your way to a different thread for that because this thread is about the experience and meant to bring the community together during the launch of one of the most community driven games Nintendo offers.

Say hello to Kapp'n, cause we're about to make it into town on June 9th.

(One more quick note; Keep an eye out for the game's review, which I will write sometime in the end of June probably.)

So I just got New Leaf last week and am enjoying it. Just got my house and everything.

Do you get a calendar at some point? I haven't played an AC game since the GameCube one, and I remember that you got a calendar that showed you what days you played the game and what days you missed. It was handy.

Do they still have furniture sets and all that? I remember that Nook gave me a catalog that you could keep track of every piece of furniture and wallpaper that you ever bought. Is that in New Leaf as well?

No calendar. Your 3DS can do that. Furniture sets, oh yeah. Tons of items. Be sure to get started on fish and bugs so you can not miss April ones. If you remind me or I remember, I have a Google doc I made I can send to you to allow you to easily track museum items.

Oh yeah, duh. I forgot that my 3DS can do that.

OK good about the furniture sets. I've gotten a good start on fish and bugs for only having the game a few days. I thought the fish and bugs were done by seasons. Do they appear by what month it is now?

@WrathOfSamus777

Yeah, they do.

I was playing during lunch today...

Headphones in. That's always been the best way to play this game from an audio standpoint. Babbling brooks, insects, music, villagers, footsteps... all so serene.

I've decided to quit letting my town be a shit hole. I have a few new visitors and old friends have left. I still have my fav, Sydney though. The bamboo forest just got way out of hand and a chore to clean up after. My town is covered in items because I have no room.

It's time to use my second character better for storage, get a better walking path going, actuallyale my town look pretty, and cultivate a heavenly place to be.

I don't know how much I can play in general buy a year later and I am still kicking on it. Wonderful. I just need 5 or so pieces of art, all paintings, and then I will have a full museum. Looking forward to completing that.

@DrFinkelstein

I planted my first bamboo shoot a few days ago after one of the villager's gave me one as a gift. It fully matured today, and I was surprised to see another shoot buried close by!

New Leaf is a pretty relaxing game. The audio you mentioned, combined with the colorful, scenic visuals, makes strolling around town a delight.

As far as other happenings go, Claudia moved into my town the other day. Her home is quite fancy. I also got a pair of glasses in the mail from Keaton. I guess he's looking out for my eyesight!

I probably don't even want to see the pitiful state of my town right now... I think last time I booted it up was December.

Though, I might have enacted the ordinance that auto-waters flowers and reduces weed growth, so maybe it won't be so bad, if did indeed do that. Probably wouldn't see any familiar faces, though.

@Mop it up

I think only one villager can leave in between sessions, so most of the familiar faces would still be there.

@Mop it up

The Beautiful Town ordinance is great. I love not having to pull weeds and worry about my flowers. I think your town should be in good shape if you had that ordinance enacted.
06/05/14, 22:08
@Jargon If that's true then that'd be nice. I don't want to lose my villager who looks like Falco, I have too much fun with his catchphrases!
06/05/14, 22:10
I should consider that ordinance now that I'm way less concerned with shopping and all that...
06/05/14, 22:28
Eventually I need to put in a 'Night Owl' ordinance. Most of my gaming is done at night now, so that's when I need to get my "work" done.

I'm going to try and max out my house as much as I can, before decorating it fully. I'm taking it slow and steady...
06/06/14, 17:50
You guys reminded me I need to check out my village now that it's June. I only jumped in in August last year.
06/06/14, 19:02
@GameDadGrant Why waste an ordinance? Just adjust the in-game clock so that it's daytime in the game. I have the clock set 5-6 hours behind because I can never play early enough to get the morning/noon/afternoon events.
06/06/14, 20:53
Almost forgot... Happy One Year Anniversary, Animal Crossing New Leaf!

250+ hours in, and I'm still loving every single minute of it!

@Jargon

I'm going in order, by column (left to right).

Insect 2: Flies around your town between August and October, 5:00-7:00 p.m.
Insect 9: Hit a rock with a shovel August-October, 7:00 p.m.-8:00 a.m.

Fish 6: All day in the river, but only in September.

Don't mind me, just moving this up so I remember it

Finally caught my last sea creature! Feels good.

Now I have just three bugs, one of which I can catch this month, and one fish to go.
07/03/14, 05:35
For those of you who have all the bugs, but haven't got your gold net yet...Bug Contest is today, don't forget to pick it up from Nat!
08/16/14, 11:22
Just caught a salmon which means... that's right... my fish collection is complete! Completed my bug collection last month. Only thing left is art, which I'm nowhere close to finishing. Probably not gonna bother there. But feels good.

@Jargon

Well I have a bunch of spares. So does Fink. We could probably give you a big boost for the art collection.

...If you help us get our last remaining pieces
