Mario Kart 8 Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U
9.14/10 from 37 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U!

This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!

Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.

With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Are you impressed with the Mario Kart TV feature, excited for the Super Horn, or bummed at how battle mode has changed? Share your thoughts on the game below, now, upon release, and well after! Below you'll find a list of Nintendo Network IDs as compiled by our own Mop It Up! Be sure your friends are added to your console!

Guess I'm the only one still playing this game then.

Experienced a strange blue shell incident on Tick Tock Clock in single player just now. On the second lap I was in the lead, pretty far ahead of DK in second place, when someone launched a blue shell. It came up towards me like usual but then just changed direction and passed me like a dog suddenly spotting a squirrel far off in the distance or something. It made almost a full lap and nearly caught up with me again when something caused it to explode on its way. Don't think it actually hit anyone apart from the ones it knocked over while speeding along the track.

The blue shells... they're becoming self-aware.... they can see the error of their ways! The tide is turning! Lol.

Also, nuh-uh! I've been on a few nights this week. I'll catch you soon.

I popped it in the other night for a few online matches, have been kind of busy lately though so it has been awhile.

I think this may be my least played Mario Kart in a long time, although a large part of that is due to my life at the moment. But I think it also has to do with the fact that I just plain don't like the battle mode, and there is no "challenge" mode or anything like that, so except for doing a few cups early on the game is basically "race against people online" for me. Which gets a bit old after awhile.

@Super_Conzo
I actually haven't been online in a while due to real life and trying to get three stars on all the cups in single player. Didn't understand why everyone said the game was so hard until I started playing mirror mode. Holy crap, the game can tear me to pieces at times.

@Zero
I've only tried the battle mode against the AI so far, and while I miss the arenas big time I think it's an enjoyable mode, if not comparable to the old stuff. Would love to see them add arena style levels in an update at some point, even though that probably won't happen. Challenge Mode was really sweet in MKDS, wouldn't have complained if they'd had one of those in here either.

I love the game right now, and I love how it feels when driving, but I was probably more impressed with the course designs in Mario Kart Wii at the time (although, thinking back, the best ones in MK8 are probably just as good as the best ones back then, in my opinion), and more obsessed with Mario Kart 64. If Nintendo were to give us a downloadable level or two, the odd vehicle and accessories, and just generally keep entertaining the Mario Kart fanbase through this game I think I can see myself playing this for a long time, though.

Trying to get 3 stars on all cups? Didn't realize that you hated yourself so much.

@Super_Conzo
I don't think it's all that bad, even though it's clear the game really does it's best to screw me over with cheap tricks quite often in Mirror Mode. Got one more retro cup to go, and two of the new ones, I think.

EDIT Actually, now things are really getting ridiculous. Three times in a row I manage to finish in first place on the three first tracks of a cup only to get my ass kicked on the finish line on the final track. Last time I suffered through two blue shells on every single level, the last of which was delivered straight up my anal cavity just as I thought I would make it. Since the game clearly wants to humiliate me, it gave me one measly banana peel when I so desperately needed something good to be able to catch up with the three people who passed me while I was busy extracting the spiny shell from in between my cheeks. Starting to think the game has some sort of let-player-win variable in its code.

Don't forget that tomorrow is the day of the patch/DLC. I'll be hosting a room at 10PM EST where everyone will use one of the Mercedes karts, so anyone's welcome to pop on in.

It's not that hard to do. I did it...even on the 50cc and 100cc cups, just for the heck of it!
08/26/14, 23:56
@ludist210
I always play the 50cc and the 100cc cups just to get warmed up and to learn the layouts of the courses, so getting the three stars there sort of came naturally. 150cc wasn't all that bad either, but Mirror Mode was insanely unfair at times, I have to say. Nevertheless, I got my three stars on everything earlier today, so I shouldn't complain too much.
08/27/14, 00:13
@ludist210
Yeah, I noticed you did that. Thought you were crazy too. My experiences with 150cc were utterly disheartening so I just backed away.

Personally I'm too addicted to Ogre Battle 64 from back on the Wii VC to care about the Karts.
08/27/14, 07:33
Anyone figure out how to get the map to appear on the TV? The race starts too fast for me to fiddle around with the Wablet to figure it out. Although at this point, I'm pretty used to looking at the map on the Wablet when I'm on straightaways.

@TheOldManFromZelda Press the Minus button on the GamePad. This won't work before the countdown starts.

All I'm gonna say is that Roy Koopa loves his new treads on the new and improved Roy Koopa Pimpmobile

@pokepal148

Nice!

I happen to think the Benz's look fine. It's no different than the classic carts you would ride around in as a kid at the local amusement park.

They also were fun to use and cool to see them all on the track during last night's cup series with Mop.

I also enjoy that they tried to authenticate the sounds each Mercedes makes, obviously in go-kart form. As a car guy, it was a nice touch that I didn't expect.

I haven't seen that many of us together in one room since the game launched! Now, how can we get these people to stay? Will I have to wait for the next DLC in November before people play again?
08/29/14, 02:23
@Mop it up

Hey, I'll always play when I can! This is a really good pick up and play game. I can have the system on, and in a game, in less than 2 minutes. Awesome.

I also like the nice teaser touch they added to both the character and cup selection screen, to show everyone what's coming and hopefully entice people to buy the packs right now!
08/29/14, 02:50
@TheOldManFromZelda I know I can always count on you, but it's awesome when we can cram ten NegWorlders into a room!
08/29/14, 02:57
@TheOldManFromZelda

Is it there as a placeholder for everyone or just folks who pre-ordered? I'd be annoyed if I didn't and they forced me to have that placeholder stuff on my game.
08/29/14, 05:09
@DrFinkelstein everyone, I take it it won't go away if I give in and buy it then... maybe if I disconnect wifi...
