Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U
9.14/10 from 37 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U!

This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!

Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.

With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Are you impressed with the Mario Kart TV feature, excited for the Super Horn, or bummed at how battle mode has changed? Share your thoughts on the game below, now, upon release, and well after! Below you'll find a list of Nintendo Network IDs as compiled by our own Mop It Up! Be sure your friends are added to your console!

@Zero Then make your Mii bigger! Bowser can't be light just because you want him to be. Or Koopa Troopa and having him be heavy.

@Stephen

Ha ha, exactly. And people wonder why Nintendo limits voice chat in their games.

Finally got my copy of Mario Kart 8 in the mail.

Now I just need to learn how to kart again.

Awesome news. I'm sure you'll be ready to enter the fray in a few days time - I'll keep an eye out for ya.
Meanwhile, my arm is out of the sling and back onto the gamepad. Come get some!

Hey, awesome! Is the arm feeling alright or is there a ways to go still, without the sling?

I bet it will take me a little while to get back into the swing of things, but mainly because I'll be busy with other stuff much of the time. Not that I've been particularly good at Mario Kart since the days of the N64.

"Other stuff" pfft. Hey, your MK64 skills will translate well here.

Elbow update: bone has healed (yay) but all muscle, ligament and tissue is shot (boo). Needs physiotherapy to get it functioning again! Cherish your limbs, people.

@Super_Conzo
The family's gathered, so there will be a lot of stuff to do, and I suspect my nephew will hog MK8, but I'll do my best to play it a bit. I don't have any real MK64 skills, btw, 'cause I literally meant I haven't been good at the series since the N64. Back then I could hold my own, but now I'm not all that hot.

Played my first couple of cups (measly 50cc) just now, and I love the game already. It does have the feel of MK64 somehow, and the zero friction stuff feels great for some reason I can't quite put my finger on. Tried a few rounds of battle mode against the AI as well, and while I do miss the arenas big time, it wasn't as bad as I thought. Yoshi Valley was actually a pretty good place for a battle, I thought.

Sucks about your elbow. Hopefully some waggle and repeated button presses can count as physiotherapy.

EDIT: Found gif. Posting gif.

Is it me, or has the fanfare for this game died down considerably?

I mean, we don't have a league set up.

I play every night online, and rarely see anyone from my friend's list playing online.

I'm also convinced Nintendo will never patch/update this game.

Pretty disappointing all around.

Does anyone else feel this way?

@TheOldManFromZelda

I was just thinking about that. To be honest life has been hitting me fast and hard right now and I kinda have a lot on my plate. Maybe I can set something up though it may not be as grandiose as previously imagined, or you may want to call Mr Mustache and have him sort this out.
07/16/14, 06:23
@Guillaume I feel the same way. I have no idea why they removed the auto-drift option, it was a great choice for beginners and/or casual players. The lack of it is one reason why my friends and family don't like this game as much as MKWii, because they feel the control is worse. Even those who have gotten a grasp on how the whole concept of drifting works would still prefer and find it more comfortable to not have a "turn button."

@TheOldManFromZelda I can't speak for in general, but it certainly has for me personally. The game just has so many problems that they're really starting to take their toll. I wouldn't be surprised if that's happening for a lot of other people as well.

I don't think Nintendo are going to patch things like balance, if they do anything then it will be things like adding a mini-map on the TV and removing fire hopping. Not sure if that will happen, but it could be a while; I think it was at least a few months before they added Pro Controller support for NSMBU. They just need to receive enough feedback I s'pose.

@r_hjort

I love those! Here's the full video. It's hilarious how seriously these people take themselves when they're in such fantastical and otherworldly costumes.

I like how Cap blocks the shell with his shield.

@TheOldManFromZelda

I thought about that last night too. I noticed nobody was playing on my friends list last night...needs some post-game content ASAP to keep it alive. It's a little bare-bones, and once it's over, it's kinda over. I still need more coins to get the golden glider, but eh...

I need to fire it back up. I'd like to finish Advance Wars first though.
07/16/14, 21:24
Played a few regional matches last night with Rosalina in my other kart setup...and I won half the races I raced, and finished in the top half in the others. Heavyweights are completely broken in this game.
07/17/14, 16:42
@ludist210

Agreed. In one room, 11 out of 12 racers were heavyweights. The other was a Mii, but I couldn't determine the weight class.
07/17/14, 17:33
@TheOldManFromZelda

Yeah, and that stinks. I like using Lakitu, but the only way to really compete online is with a heavier character.
07/17/14, 17:48
@TheOldManFromZelda @ludist210

This happens with most online games. After a game has been out for a while, people stop playing or don't play as much. I'm still playing, just not as often as I was in June.
07/17/14, 18:28
@canonj

Same. I did enjoy the matches I played last night, and it wasn't difficult to find an opponent.
07/17/14, 18:30
@Hero_Of_Hyrule
Thanks for the link! Never saw the videos, and I don't quite have time to watch them right now, but I will later!

Sad to hear some of you are getting sick of MK8, 'cause even though I haven't managed to play a whole lot, and haven't had time to go online, I'm friggin' loving the single player and the local multi.
07/17/14, 23:30
I just got this a few days back, and am still dabbling a bit in the single-player. I've gotten through the 50cc and 100cc races, going to do the 150cc next and then probably start checking out the online.

I already can see what you guys have been saying about the balance (or lack thereof). Really enjoying the set of tracks, though.

Nah. Don't feel that way at all.
