@chrisbg99spoken from a true fan of the game ...or someone who hasn't watched a good league game..like ever. (MLS does NOT count) 5-0 or more..is a blowout in soccer. Or...how the team played as a whole and even if Germany only scored 3 goals, they completely destroyed Brazil in almost every way for most of the game. Usually World Cup games are one of the most boring soccer matches ever..which is a shame because it's the one event that gets so much press. Interested people tune in..see a boring game and conclude thats how soccer is played. I'm a huge soccer nut..but even I draw the line somewhere. I've been overly impressed by this World Cup. There has been more goals this year in this tournament then ever and it's been generally very unpredictable. Hopefully the next two games that are left prove to be memorable. ***** But to each his own ... Shouting out to everyone here... What are your favourite sports to play/watch? I said I'm a soccer nut..but I watch the BPL (Barclays Premier League based in England) and the Champions Leage (Top teams from several European Countries) which prove to be a much faster paced game....it's what made me a fan of the game (to watch).. I loved softball (playing)...but I can't stand watching a 3hr baseball game on TV... I mean how boring can a game get when the announcers start talking about a fan sleeping during the game?? Hockey is Canada's game... but I hate the NHL. Only in the NHL can a team (Toronto) suck so much and fans keep showing up paying for a lousy team. Way too much crap (fighting/swinging sticks to the head) I tend to watch more Olympics or World Juniors. I Like Basketball..but dont' watch too many NBA/NCAA games.. Football..(American/Canadian)... CFL is more fun to watch..it's a bit faster. But I tend not to watch any unless it's like..the final. Golf ... does mini put count? I can't stand watching it either..although the highlights can be cool... and Wii spots golf is fun. Nascar....they turn left ....right? Go ahead - name your fav and why! This thread is so long I have no idea who likes what.. |

@SmerdI think the OP at the top has all of our favorite teams, but not really favorite sports to play/watch... I love sports. Sports sports sports. I used to play football and baseball in high school. I was pretty good at football. I was ok at baseball. As I got older, I couldn't keep up with the skill level. Now, I play softball recreationally. It's a fun diversion. I played volleyball recreationally, and that was fun too. I wish I could do it again. I regularly golf. My handicap is about 14, which is average, but not great. I can hold my own out there. I like to play tennis too. It's a lot of fun, even though I never played as of 3 years ago. I can play basketball. I may not be able to score a lot, but I can dribble successfully (between my legs, crossover, behind the back, etc.) and pass. On TV, my favorite sport to watch is Hockey. There's no downtime at all. It's the only sport where's there's no downtime while the clock is running. 60 minutes of play. No between plays, no in bounding the ball, no players getting carted off on a sled. It's great. I enjoy the NFL, but the games take too long. Ugh. Baseball is ok. I like watching the playoffs. Every pitch counts then. I hate the NBA, but love college basketball. More of a team dynamic there. Live, I'll watch just about any sport. I've seen the big 4 (NHL, NBA, NFL, MLB), plus NASCAR and MLL (indoor lacrosse). I've also attended the PGA Championship twice, and worked it once! I have a half-season ticket package to the Rochester Americans (AHL franchise). It's just fun to be part of the live experience anywhere. I've traveled to Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Ottawa, and Boston to see NHL games as well. Great times. Boston is easily my favorite city to see a game. |

@SmerdI played football in high school and dabbled in track, swimming and crew, but my favorite sport to play by far is basketball. I can hold my own against even the best competition as far as recreational games go, but I've lost the stamina and lateral quickness in my old age so I'm not the defensive standout I once was. I'll still always be best at tackle football and I'd love to play competitively now since I weigh a lot more and still have very good straight ahead speed. But the best you can really find is flag football which is fun but just not the same. I'm not very skilled at baseball but I am quite good at wiffleball. I play softball in a work league now and had the game winning home run the other day, which was my first ever softball home run. Probably would have been an out with a decent left fielder but oh well! Mostly though I just use my speed to get singles. Played golf twice and sucked but I may try again when I can't play more physically taxing sports anymore. Tennis is fun but I never spent enough time to get good so not all it could be. Never played hockey. Is beer pong a sport? I user to be quite good at that (and took it way too seriously). |

@SmerdI should've also stated that I watch soccer and understand how it works. I should've also explained what I meant about the 60 minutes of full playing. I meant that when the clock is running, players are going 100%, whereas in soccer, there's downtime for injuries, juice box breaks, orange slices, out of bounds, etc. The clock doesn't stop there. And, you have to admit, there's a lot of lollygagging by many of the players some of the time while the ball is in play. In basketball, the clock doesn't stop for made baskets, etc. Plus, there's a lot of wasted time 'setting up plays' ('stars' trying to ISO and wait for 10 seconds on the shot clock). Baseball is the worst in terms of time management. Pitch, wait, scratch, adjust, spit, pitch again. If you think about it, all the action of a baseball game takes place within 5 minutes of time (each pitch, hit, catch, throw, etc.). Football is the absolute worst. Timeouts, commercials, milking the play clock. There's probably only about 15 minutes of action in an 'hour' long game. I like it, but c'mon. Pick up the pace! Hockey, not so much of a time problem. When that puck is dropped, players go full tilt until a goal or a whistle is blown. Commercial timeouts are every 7 minutes of game time, and intermission is understandably 18 minutes to allow for ice resurfacing and drying. Total time is about 2 and a half hours. It's a pretty quick game for 60 minutes of actual game time. |

I enjoy watching almost all sports. College football is probably my favorite to watch, I plan my fall Saturdays entirely around it. College basketball is a close second. NFL Sundays rank pretty high as well, but I don't get into it as much as I do college (and if I didn't play fantasy football, I probably would watch a lot less of it).
Interestingly enough, I absolutely love watching golf on TV, especially the final round of a major. I'll never understand the whole "boring" argument. There's always something going on, and watching the leaderboard shuffle around on a Sunday afternoon when some guys are hitting big shots, while others are collapsing under the pressure, it's great. And when the whole thing comes down to one putt on the 18th hole, there's really nothing better.
Hockey probably comes next. It's another sport I can just tune into and watch and be immediately hooked. True, it's an even better sport to attend live, but I still really enjoy watching it when it's on TV too. It has the most continuous action of any of the big sports.
Baseball I enjoy, but it's tough for me to watch it if I'm not interested in the team that's playing. For instance, I can watch a football game between two random teams that I don't care much about, and enjoy my time spent. In the case of baseball, I lose interest very quickly if I don't have a vested interest in the outcome of the game. But it's really gripping when you're watching your favorite team in September/October, and every pitch is crucial. In general, baseball is not one of my favorite sports to watch, but it rises to the top during the playoffs if my team is playing.
Soccer is one of those sports that I'm fine with getting into every four years. I don't find it interesting enough to get into on a regular basis, but I really do enjoy the World Cup. And it's more about the World Cup than the four year gap...if the World Cup was every year, I'd be into it every year. It's like March Madness in that respect.
Not a big NBA fan. I was huge into it when I was a kid, but after the '99 lockout I got burned out like I guess a lot of other people did, and never really got back into it. But I will watch some playoff games if the series interests me. In general, though, I'm watching a lot more hockey while the NBA playoffs are going on.
I don't watch any auto racing, it's the one sport I just never watch period. Tennis, I might watch the last set of a grand slam final, but usually not more than that. |

Lou's sister was keeping track of actual gameplay at the Super Bowl. I think she gave up about 5 minutes in.
----
I watch NASCAR every week; the full race, Qualifying, and as much Practice as I can. I like to get the whole story. Its a really different situation than other team-based things, even though there are small team dynamics IN auto racing. Its kinda tough to explain in a single post, so I won't try. What I WILL say is that there is so much SCIENCE involved that is discarded with a "they turn left, hur hur" that its mindboggling. I know that NASCAR is viewed as a hillbilly thing where the dumbest of the dumb watch, but ignoring things like aerodynamic drag and "the draft" and frictions and all those good things..doesn't that lower one to hillbilly level themselves? Yeah, I'm sure there is science involved in all of these sports that we're talking about, but if you get a stray hot dog wrapper on your grill in anything else, you aren't going to lose control of the way you handle and go on to overheat in 4 minutes.
I watch all of the football I can during the season, and I'm super into Fantasy Football. Tear that S up. I go to Bills games, one every / every other year. Lou and I had season seats (ROW 4) to our Arena Football affiliate for 3 years. Good times.
Baseball, I watch when the O's are on. Since we're out of market, that doesn't happen too often. I get to see them when they're playing the Yankees, or when Extra Innings has some freebie package going on. And I'm in New York, so the GD Yankees take precedence when they're up for a FOX game of the week, and if they aren't playing, the GD Red Sox are next up. Bummer.
I play Fantasy Hockey, and watch as much as I can during the Olympics.
I don't watch anything else. I went to pick up my suit today for my sister's wedding on Friday; they had ESPN on and the entire time they were talking about Basketball (TWICE -- and its the freakin' offseason!!) and Soccer. What an abysmal afternoon at Men's Wearhouse. Somehow they didn't talk about any baseball, and I was pretty confused by the fact that they aren't talking about football at all, which is one month away. Yes, the Bills have a preseason game against the New York Giants on August 3rd in Canton. Hall of Fame Game! |
