Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U
9.14/10 from 37 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U!

This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!

Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.

With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Are you impressed with the Mario Kart TV feature, excited for the Super Horn, or bummed at how battle mode has changed? Share your thoughts on the game below, now, upon release, and well after! Below you'll find a list of Nintendo Network IDs as compiled by our own Mop It Up! Be sure your friends are added to your console!

Truth.

Been playing with someone with over 8000 VR points. He's been 1st every time, by a huge margin. I don't understand it.

@carlosrox Um... I really doubt Nintendo changed the code to secretly give higher ranked players more of an advantage. If anything Nintendo would do the reverse.

Isn't the more likely explanation that higher ranked players are generally just plain better than us?

I'm just imagining a whole bunch of Mop it Up's out there. I'd get 12th almost every race, and deserve it. Not to be a dick, but what makes you think that you should be able to compete with the best?

On occasion I get into races with people way better than me. I'll stick with it for a few races, but usually I bail on them soon enough and find another group. No interest in playing with a group who are all out of my league.

Semi-related story. I used to play the heck out of the original Super Mario Kart, got pretty good at it. My one cousin barely ever played it. On occasion we would play together. He would ALWAYS complain about how "cheap" the game was because we had the same karts but I kept ending up in front of him, so clearly the game was giving me turbo boosts or something. It's like he literally had no concept of how a racing game works.

Anyone game for some late races tonight?

@anon_mastermind

I might be, depending on what late means, heh

Same! haha.

Still, sometimes I'd really like to know what the people up in front are doing that I'm not. Is it simply trying to get out early? Item usage? I feel like I can power slide and have a good racing line like the best of them but sometimes I feel like I'm missing out on some sort of secret.

Have you done time trials against the best? Whenever I think I have "perfect" lines / sliding down, I try a few ghosts and learn how very, very far from perfect I actually am.
07/08/14, 06:38
@Zero

Hacks. All of them. Clearly we have the best racing lines.

I'm just bitter and jealous.

@Zero

And in all fairness, the chaos of online is vastly different to the controlled environment of the time trials.

What bothers me is that it feels like however the race starts, that's pretty much how it'll end. Like, if you're not in 1st by the middle of the 1st lap, you'll have an extremely difficult time ending in first; likewise, the guy who starts off ahead--if he races decently--will likely stay there without a problem.
07/08/14, 08:18
@TriforceBun

I'm the opposite. I can start a race really well (I can boost out to first often), but I'll almost always get bumped off-track by someone (I'm usually a lightweight) early to mid-race and then I'm lucky to get into the top 3 by the end of the race. I rarely finish last, but I also rarely finish first.

@TriforceBun

I led one race last night for 2 1/2 laps, and by the end of the race, I finished 9th, at no fault of mine. Lightning, which caused me to lose AND hit my own shell I was carrying (-6 coins), then a Red Shell (-3 coins), and then getting knocked off the track (-1 coin). I guess I was lucky to finish 9th.

Good races, I was stuck in the middle of the pack most of the time though. Usually one spot Behind Lou. I really have trouble with lightweights if I can't get to an early lead.

Love this article about the challenge of teaching games we're familiar with to complete beginners. And MK8 is such a perfect example. Showing Karen when to boost start and telling her to do tricks at every jump was easy, but the drifting!? It's hard to put into words. It's almost more about feeling than technique.
07/08/14, 18:53
@TriforceBun I'll tell you what... I am in 1st after the first lap all the time, but I really, really have to fight to stay there, and I usually don't stay there.
07/08/14, 19:57
@anon_mastermind

Indeed. My suggestion would be to switch to heavyweights to get that speed way up!
07/08/14, 21:58
@TheOldManFromZelda

But on impact, you slow to a crawl...if you're in front, heavyweights are great!

...hey, wait! Aren't you always Shy Guy?
07/08/14, 22:06
@ludist210

Online? Not anymore. I switched to DK, and the results were immediate, even with the same kart and wheels.
