@nate38

Yup, I tried it 3 times and it won't save at all.

I encountered another glitch. Ugh. Spoilers for the final boss!

I was fighting the first form of the final boss of the game. I ended up killing her at the exact moment that I fell to my death. This caused the sequence to play where The Enchantress flies to the top of the screen and Shield Knight begins to fall. Normally, the player would have to move Shovel Knight in position to catch her, but since he died at the same moment the boss did, Shovel Knight was nowhere to be found. Shield Knight just hit the ground and laid there. Since Shovel Knight was complete gone, I couldn't do anything to advance the game and had to exit out to the home menu and redo the final level and boss.

But I did finish the game today! 100% Of the items collected and about 60-70% of the feats performed. I want to go back and get all of them except for the crazy ones like beating the game without dying or without falling into any pits. I was halfway through a level in an attempt to get the "beat a level with no damage" feat, but my Gamepad's battery died and my Wii U froze again. At that point, I had to take a break.

@Hero_Of_Hyrule

Apparently you can get the "no death" challenge by simply exiting a level when you die. It seems it's intentional too... which is kind of cheap really. Or if it's not intentional, they sure didn't make it sound like they were gonna change it according to their replies to someone on Twitter.

@VofEscaflowne Yeah you can use that for the speedrun achievement, too. If you make a mistake in your run that slows things down, just exit to the map and the in-game timer will be reset to before you entered the stage.

Now that I am at the final levels of the game, I have to bring up the difficulty issue again... what are those people who think this game is too easy smoking? My neighbors probably think I have tourette syndrome with the things that are coming out of my mouth as I continuously die. I wouldn't dream of smashing these checkpoints.

@Hinph

lol, I'm midway and I still feel like you. This game isn't too easy at all, especially the bosses.
06/30/14, 11:02
Hehe. Not that this is a bad thing. Hinph likes dying and saying vulgar things to his TV... always has.

Finished my first playthrough this weekend, and this game is the best NES game I have played in years. A little over five hours in, collected 94% of stuff (missed a couple of music sheets) and died less than 50 times. Can't wait to jump into a new game +!

@Hinph

I didn't think it was overly difficult, but it wasn't easy.

I'm really digging this Shovel Knight. It's such an impressive tribute to the NES and its celebrated games. The 8-bit aesthetic is so refined, and all of the gameplay elements harmoniously blend together to form a really fun, inspired game.

Also, I think Shovel Knight is pretty challenging so far. Some levels are intense without checkpoints. The fear of losing gold and your progress motivates me to improve, and its satisfying to overcome a difficult part of a level. These checkpoints are there when you need them, but destroying them changes the playing field in an interesting way.

One more thing...I love Shovel Knight's run animation.

@ludist210

Yeah, just right really... the fact that "too easy" is one of the complaints out there is just nonsense. Most of the bosses are surprisingly on the easy side so far, but the levels? I'm sure finding many ways of dying and losing my precious gold.
06/30/14, 20:07
@Hinph

Yeah, "too easy" isn't a fair assessment. It's certainly not hard, and the punishment for dying isn't brutal, but it's not too easy. Mole Knight's stage especially gave me trouble for whatever reason.

Interview with Yacht Club guys here...

It's kind of all over the place, but they discuss their future plans in it... the other playable characters should make for different experiences than Shovel Knight, some offering an easier campaign and others more difficult. So it looks like it might be awhile before they get to move on to their next project, but they once again bring up the possibility of Super Shovel Knight and a 3D-platformer style Shovel Knight 64 (but without ugly N64 graphics, which is good).

Also, this game was apparently only made by half a dozen people which is awesome. Truly just like NES games in the 80's.

So did the first few Knights.

Thoughts. Loving the gameplay for the most part. Platforming is great, but when it comes to platforming + combat I feel I lose a lot of control. The game is probably closer to Zelda 2 than most 2d platformers and I can't put my finger on it but the controls just seem off compared to that.
The world map is great and the towns so far are perfect. Graphics are of course nice and the music + sound effects remind me of the Oracle of Ages/Seasons for some reason more than the NES/SNES.
Bosses are my least favorite part so far which strangely makes it the same as Zelda 2. They basically have boiled down to me just bashing the enemy over and over as the game hasn't clued me into any other ways to kill them and they often jump around too much for me to make use of my other weapons. When I can make use of my other weapons, I run out of magic too quickly and have to resort back to bashing them up with my shovel. I also miss the up attack that Zelda 2 had and find it strange that they chose to use up attack in this to use items instead of the something like the B/A button. It would mean you would be less likely to accidentally use up your item and add in another attack.

@Pokefreak911
You can reassign the sub weapon button to a separate button instead of up+attack in the Options. I'd recommend a shoulder button.

@TriforceBun
Wait really? Oh thank the stars. Why on earth is this hidden away in an options menu for!

@Pokefreak911

Remember when you fight a boss: shovel everything. (saved me a world of trouble against Mole Knight)

Just beat the game. Great game overall though I had some gripes. Mostly the tendency of the game to push you back with successful attacks and for whatever reason your jumps and swipes didn't seem to go as far as I thought they would.

But still great game. Of the NES style indie games coming out lately I think it is the best of the lot by far. Many times the games have a single gimmick sandwiched around brutal difficulty (1001 Spikes being the more recent example) so it is nice that one feels more varied in its gameplay and scenarios.

I beat it! Very good game, felt like the perfect length and it kept me hooked. I'm really looking forward to the additional modes coming later this year (for freeeee). The ending was kind of sweet.

All in all, I'd say it's definitely the best game of last month, and one of my top picks for the year. DK's still the king of the jungle, but is it weird if I think Shovel Knight tops Mario Kart 8?

@ploot
Haha, Butt Mode sounds hilarious.

Pretty much agree with Ian here.
