Nintendo Smash-Fest: Play the new Super Smash Bros at participating Best Buy stores during E3

This looks like an event similar to the last Best Buy one for Mario Kart 8 / etc., which means the lines will probably be insanely long and the play times short, but hey, it still looks fun! And they are giving out gold coins and a $5 off coupon for the game to people who pre-order, so that's something.

To play, visit a participating store:

• Wednesday, June 11 from 4 p.m.–9 p.m.
• Saturday, June 14 from Noon–5 p.m.

Be one of the first 70 attendees at each event to pre-order Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS or Wii U and receive a rare collectible Super Smash Bros. gold coin (one per customer, while supplies last). You will also get a $5 My Best Buy™ certificate when you pick up your fully paid game upon release.

Bring your Nintendo 3DS or Nintendo 2DS system to the event and play games like Kirby: Triple Deluxe or Mario Golf: World Tour with other fans.

You can check the link below to see which stores are participating.

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

Chicago people, looks like the Countryside Best Buy is participating, which means we won't have to go super far north if we want to check it out. Anyone interested?

I'm going to try and go while in Georgia. I want to play and I want that coin.

The same Best Buys are participating in my area as last time. This means there's a slim to none chance of me going. Hopefully we get some good impressions from board members that attend.

Guess this thing isn't good enough for the biggest mall in the country. Wtf?

Last time they had this I showed up and all the slots had already been filled. It was lame. This time I will try to show up sooner and the place is closer so it wouldn't be as annoying if I got shut out again.

@Jargon

How early did you show before? Last year I showed about an hour early and was 7th place in line for demos.

I plan to go. I'll probably go by the store an hour early to sign up and just hang out in the area until it's time to play.

Who do you plan on playing as? I'm going with Little Mac, no doubt. That is, assuming he's playable. If he's not for some reason, then maybe the Villager or Mega Man.

I'm in line now. It is crazy. They said I won't get to play until 9 PM. Wondering if it's worth it for two minutes of playing. At least I got some Streetpasses.

@Jargon

HAHA! Wow, thats crazy.

What is this coin thing people are talking about? Is it free, or do you have to Win it?

@Mr_Mustache

You get it if you preorder the game. Which I can't do since I'm moving but I don't really care about that.

@Jargon

Yeah, read that up there after I wrote it, sorry. Did you bring Kirby Triple Deluxe or Mario Golf as they suggested?

Maybe you can convince the people in line to do a number type system so you guys can walk around. You're going to be sitting/standing there for 3 hours? Yikes.

@Jargon

Order in!

If they give you a problem, just flash some Mentos.

I'm up next on 3DS! And apparently the Wii U line is thinning out. This is already better than my last Best Buy event experience.

Played Smash Run! Controls took some getting used to after a decade+ of GCN controller, but seemed good. The game itself was rather Subspace Emissary-ish. Not that compelling. Wish they had let us play the actual game. But it looked good and I'm happy to say I got an early look at the game.

Wait, they made you stand in line and you didn't even get to play the main game?!

@Zero

You play the main game of the Wii U version, for which I am still in line. Guys with the 3DS version were walking around and letting people in line play.

I'm in the home stretch!

I waited 2 and 1/2 hours for 8 minutes of Little Mac glory.

It was worth it.

Finally got to play after 3 hours of waiting! Sure it was just a two minute match, but worth it! Well probably not, but oh well.

I played as Little Mac, went up against Mario (Nathalie), Mega Man (random dude #1) and Greninja (random dude #2). We played on the Dr. Wily stage.

Game looked really great and the music was awesome as you'd expect from a Mega Man stage. Playing with a Pro controller took some getting used to, but worked well enough (although I'll definitely get the Gamecube adapter).

The level was completely crazy. The Yellow Devil was fucking everyone up and no one knew when he was going to appear and what he was going to do. Led to absolute chaos.

I definitely didn't know what I was really doing with Little Mac. I missed on my only attack with the KO mechanic and I didn't know how I even triggered it. My best damage was done with simple melee attacks. His special moves were harder to figure and I killed myself twice with his side B attack which was some kind of dash.

Despite that, I was surprised to find out that I won the match. Guess everyone was as overwhelmed as I was.

Overall, the game feels basically just like Brawl except with new graphics and characters. I'm honestly fine with that since so much of the new stuff is so cool. But if you are hoping for the return of Melee, you may be disappointed. Then again, there might be options that change things in the full game. We'll see, but I had fun and am super excited for the game to come out.
