This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart8!
Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.
With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Are you impressed with the Mario Kart TV feature, excited for the Super Horn, or bummed at how battle mode has changed? Share your thoughts on the game below, now, upon release, and well after! Below you'll find a list of Nintendo Network IDs as compiled by our own Mop It Up! Be sure your friends are added to your console!
@carlosrox I'm not sure, I never have tried it outside of Battle Mode but it wouldn't server any purpose outside of it. You need a little bit of space, but you basically gas into a slide, let off the gas once you are into the slide, and the kart comes to a near dead stop, does a "180" (less since you are turned a little) and then you can gas it back into action. It's pretty seamless once you get down the timing of it.
I'm glad the feature is there and it has already brought some pretty great moments to light but I feel like this is a case of Nintendo trying to make something user friendly and in doing so gutting some functionality that people would want. For example, last night I played a match against a friend and there was a humorous moment where his Piranha Plant snaps at something but due to some network latency or some kind of glitch the plant extended a good 20 feet to chomp at whatever it was going after. So I hop in to MKTV and try to find it. I can't use the highlight reel obviously as it was something that wasn't a big hit or whatever other criteria they have as trigger points so my only option left was to go through the full race. Now right away this introduces a couple problems. First, I have to share this whole race which is annoying but doable. Unfortunately if you want to upload to Youtube it caps out at 30 seconds. Even if I could get the clip as I want it in the time frame I have another problem. The only camera option seems to be this automatic mode which is all well and good for a lot of things but for something like this it just so happens it is stuck facing the wrong direction when the moment of interest occurs.
It's a step in the right direction but yeah, it's a far cry from what we've seen in say, the most recent Halo games. Some more control would be really appreciated.
And I put up a 60 second one which is the max. I agree about lack of edit options though. With how much people have been sharing their stuff, the game NEEDS it.
I think someone here compared the battle mode to jousting, and that's probably a good comparison to what it's like now. I actually think the setup is interesting and a decent spin on battle, the only problem I have is that it replaces the arena mode instead of being an addition to it. People would also probably be more accepting of it as an optional mode to compliment the normal battle.
@kriswright I think the Wii battle mode needed more options for offline play (such as a free-for-all mode) but playing a 6v6 match online could be surprisingly fun. It was fun enough that I played until I reached 9,999 BR as part of 100%-ing the game, and it was likely the most fun I've had in any MK battle mode.
@Zero Have you played the game online yet? That's where the extreme lack of balance becomes apparent.
@missypissy I didn't stumble upon it, but rather heard about it elsewhere.
I feel incredibly inadequate playing regional/worldwide races online. I always finish in the bottom 4 or 5, and I can never catch up. Very frustrating.
I feel like it makes the game way more offensive. I'm way more likely to shoot or dump an item when I'm approaching the item boxes to get something new.
