Mario Kart 8 Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U
9.14/10 from 37 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!
This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!

Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.

With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Are you impressed with the Mario Kart TV feature, excited for the Super Horn, or bummed at how battle mode has changed? Share your thoughts on the game below, now, upon release, and well after! Below you'll find a list of Nintendo Network IDs as compiled by our own Mop It Up! Be sure your friends are added to your console!

I had some fun races with a few of you guys. Nice finish on Yoshi Valley, Ploot!

@kgtennispro

Hopefully that will get addressed, especially if it's a recurring issue for players.

Yeah, racing was fun tonight! I got disconnected and stopped playing for a while, but when I was playing it was good to see all Negative World people dominating the top few spots in every race.

Definitely looking forward to playing more of this with you all.

OK, wow... Worst Roster ever. If it wasn't for Pink Gold Peach, I'd be super bummed.

Also, I'd like to thank the MK8 promotion for this:

Yeah... I don't understand why they keep thinking they have to reinvent the wheel with Battle Mode. Just fucking do it like it was in MK64.

I'm hoping proper battle mode tracks are in DLC plans.

Initial thoughts after playing last night, both alone and online...

1) It looks spectacular. It controls great. Animations are smooth and fluid. Awesome.

2) Great variety of tracks.

3) Hate the lack of voice chat during races. Oh well.

4) I started playing off TV, but couldn't switch the pad back to the map after I wants to play on the TV. There's like, no option menu at all. Unless I'm blind.

Folks, please bitch about this in your post-play surveys. It is so frustrating that we're going to yet again have to go to Skype, or Xbox, or Playstation to properly chat while we're playing our Nintendo game. A global chat app on Wii U, if possible, would be a wonderful catch-all solution, of course.

@TheOldManFromZelda Don't you just tap on the map?

My thoughts so far.

1.) Looks awesome.
2.) Sounds awesome (but why is Charles Martinet's Mario voice seemingly getting higher and higher each game? )
3.) No voice chat during races is a bummer. I guess having 12 people talk at a time could be annoying (I know we were talking over each other last night) but still, I hate when we get cut off.
4.) Still have a strong dislike for unlocking characters and stuff through single player.
5.) Wish I could put different stuff on screen, like the map overlay. I know you couldn't do this in other versions of the game, but it would be nice.
6.) Wish you could have the option to split the screen horizontally, though I probably like it better vertically now.
7.) I miss having a parade upon completing a Cup in single/multiplayer.
8.) Mario Kart TV is cute, but I wish we had more control over the highlights that display at the end of each race. Not sure how much use I'll get out of this mode outside of just looking at the game in slo-mo now and then.
9.) I wish you could see who is talking in the lobby. From what I could tell there was no indicator or anything.
10.) The tracks are awesome, and the upside-down parts add more to the game than I initially thought.

@PogueSquadron

I don't have a map anymore. I lost it when I switched to off TV play. I don't know how to get my map back.

@TheOldManFromZelda

Is it in the manual?
05/31/14, 15:50
I'm actually happy there are no voice chatting going on during gameplay. That would be way too annoying hearing a bunch of people yelling and screaming around. I want to focus on the gameplay and being able to hear the game's soundtrack without interference is a huge plus.
05/31/14, 15:53
Yeah for some reason I thought we would be able to talk during our races....guess not yet. The good thing about it is I believe there are possible fixes/patches that can be done if we all complain during our post play surveys.

I agree with RAW - WE MUST SPEAK UP (no pun intended)

A lot of impressions here pretty much align with mine - Game is so pretty to look at.... Play this game for an hour then put in Mario Kart Wii.. Your eyes just may start bleeding...

@gamewizard65

I guess it would be nice to have an option for people, so while you could locally cut off the voice chat, others could have it. I totally agree with the concern of cussing and screaming and stuff. Still, I find myself on Skype with Stephen and ShadowLink and such and it's still fun to chat during the races. Being competitive and what not.

This game is awesome. Played online a bunch last night, tried to join the game Lou and Rob and Bun were playing but it was full

How do I get added to the OP? My name is rebonack
05/31/14, 16:23
@rebonack

All you need to do is what you've already done!

MopItUp (and me to a degree) has been keeping an eye on the people who want their names in here. I've been generally adding from her list to keep things updated.

You can unlock kart upgrades based on how many coins you collect in online multi-play.

Also, everything that unlocks in single play also unlocks in local multi-play, which is a definite improvement over the Wii version.

Amen. They're lucky the rest of the game is fantastic. I don't get how they have such good design all over, and then one thing that's clearly just shit. Who lets these things pass?

Hmm, other thing is I find it odd that you can only hold one item at a time. I kinda liked the reserve item system from before. All the previous games had it right?

Add me to the list of NNID's, please.

Hero_of_Hyrule - Deku_Scrub

I post some strange and stupid stuff on Miiverse, so don't take that as an accurate representation of what I'm like.
05/31/14, 17:14
@Griptor

I like having only one item at a time. It prevents item hoarding for people who hang in the back with a star or something, then race to the front.

Just tap on the upper-right part of the screen and it'll come back.

That had to be the best set of games I played online. It was a total NW and Twitter takeover for me Such insanity.
