Pikmin 3 Review (Nintendo Wii U) (9.8)  by
Just thought this title needed an official thread.

Yesterday, while browsing the interwebs at work, I found a hands-on of the game that mentioned something that I had not heard of anywhere else. Unfortunately, I don't remember where it was, but here's the gist...

Pikmin 3 now has an evade move! From Nintendojo "Handy, then, that our new lead character has a nifty dodge ability that sees both him and his band of Pikmin roll to the side in perfect unison whenever danger’s about to rear its ugly head. It took a while to master, especially since there seems to be a small amount of recovery time before you can initiate another one, but it brought a welcome sense of drama to the fights, as well as a greater feeling of control over your large army."

Let's give this launch window game some love! ERRR..... Releases August 4th!

Well, I tried to post the trailer. Thanks Renjaku!

Now lets take a look at Gamexplain of the newest video

@Jargon

Yeah, sorry. I didn't mean for that to come off as touchy as it did. Now that I look at it again, I see what you mean. What I was thinking - at the end of a long, long day of work and birthing class - was, "Eh, me and Jargon are about to start a three page long debate about 3D World and what constitutes a True Mario Experience in the Pikmin 3 thread. Better cut that off at the pass. How can I say my piece in as short a reply as possible." So that was my project with that post. But you know how it is where you type something and you think the tone is right and then you look at it again the next day and realize it sounds a lot different than you intended. This was one of those times. I didn't mean "finger-pointing" as an accusation, for instance. I meant, "let's not let this get out of hand and turn into finger-pointing". I used the word hypocrite, but I really didn't mean it in such operatic terms as that. I mean, it's Mario we're talking about here, not politics or morality. The rest, which I agree sounds curt, was really just me trying to compress my feelings into as small of an explanation as possible.

So, it was just a failure of writing. Seriously, sorry for that. Sometimes I think I should start using emoticons again. I didn't used to have this problem. :)

@kriswright

It's cool, sir. I was honestly just curious about whether Bee Mario felt more in line with previous power-ups to you and I even reread my post to make sure it wasn't misconstrued so I was pretty taken aback. Thanks for clarifying.

Steph and I have been working to get Platinums on the Collect Treasure mission levels and... it's almost more fun than the actual game! The partner-based problem solving, divvying up the workload, the mad scramble, the improvisation... this is so much fun, man. She and I have both been talking about Pikmin all week. You know, we play a lot of Nintendo games together but only DKCRTF has had that kind of effect on us in the last, oh, couple of years. We're constantly saying to each other "One more try" and loving every minute of it.

Seriously, this game is a masterpiece.

This would easily have been my Game of the Year for last year.

@kriswright

Yeah, Mission Mode (Treasure especially) is super addictive, and possibly my favorite part of the game. It's really fun to try out new things each time around and improve your gameplay enough to snag that elusive Platinum. Have you gotten the DLC?
04/19/14, 05:57
@TriforceBun

Had to! Platinumized all the included options and, like a dope fiend, had to have more!

That Christmas level sure is crazy, isn't it?
04/19/14, 05:59
Yeah, took me a good while to nail that one down. And I definitely couldn't resist nabbing up all the DLC either.

I think I have about 2 platinums left to get in each mode now--treasure, enemy, and boss. I held off on enemy for awhile but it's actually quite fun. I'm not really crazy about boss mode, though--it doesn't quite lend itself as well to speed runs as the others, IMO. But it is very cool to have the option to refight bosses either way.

I'm so glad people are discovering the fun of the missions, especially co-op. Karen and I had a blast platinuming everything save one or two maps we didn't care for.

@Guillaume

It is an excellent "play with a gal" sorta game.
04/19/14, 21:08
Someone send me a girl so I can get platinums.

*sigh*
04/20/14, 03:12
I have a girl, she just isn't much of a Pikmin fan.

@Zero

You let your woman have her own preferences in life? Bad form. You're going to ruin this good thing we got going.
04/20/14, 17:56
Ha ha well... she's kind of a non-gamer so I think trying to force stuff on her wouldn't go over very well. I just kind of show her a variety of stuff and anything she shows some interest in we play for a bit. Sometimes she legitimately likes something and we play it more than a bit.

What I've learned is that she basically doesn't get into much of anything that requires her to spend time learning complicated (for a non-gamer) controls. Or much of anything in 3D. So Pikmin already has two strikes against it.

I don't recall if she actually played it herself though. I think she might have just been watching me play and when I offered her a turn she was like nope, looks way too confusing.

Hmm, this makes her sound like... slow or unintelligent or something, but that isn't the case. It's just a matter of motivation. She doesn't really see the point of spending time learning how to play some games when she can jump right into other games.

Karen didn't like the game initially, but that was because she doesn't like not being immediately good at a game. But because the look of the game appealed to her and she liked watching me play, she gave it more of a shot and I took the time to explain the controls in detail. After that, she enjoyed playing the co-op missions a lot more.

@Zero

Sarah had a similar reaction to Pikmin. She likes watching me play it sometimes, but she says "I'm worried I'm gonna mess it up" when I offer her a chance to try it out.

@Zero

I'm working on a review of Pikmin 3 (coming December 2017, probably) and one of the points I make is the number of tensions in the design of Pikmin. It's a game that you could reasonably argue is both complicated and simple (also: totally cute vs. totally brutal, designed for kids and designed for adults, etc.). Shirley's right, there is a lot more to learn in Pikmin than in a standard game, mostly because you're starting from scratch, as Pikmin's pretty much its own genre and you have to learn all the rules of the genre. But, in reality, Steph watched me play for a while, to get the idea of what the game was all about, and then when she tried for herself in the challenge modes it didn't take too long for her to get up to speed. Maybe 20 minutes. So it's intuitive enough to pick up and play, once you know what the objectives are. Especially with the buttery-good Wiimote controls.

Of course, she's going to have to want to play it with you in the first place. It's weird, though. Even though I don't know her personally, on one hand I think, "That's the sort of game Shirley probably would actually like." But I'm not sure how easy that'd be to convince her if she didn't respond to it before. In fact, that's another tension I identify - Pikmin has got such a broad spectrum of appeal that should include just about anyone, and yet I think that's partly why the series is doomed to play to a cult audience. I imagine mainstream players often see it as a game made for someone else.

Which is a shame. I wish Pikmin was everywhere, with its own cartoon series and action figures and bars of soap.

@Guillaume Hmm, I rarely actually sit around and play video games in front of Shirley though, usually when we're together we do things together. I forget why she saw me playing Pikmin 3 but it was probably only for a few minutes.

@kriswright 20 minutes is about 20x as long as Shirley wants to spend learning controls, ha ha. She likes stuff like Rhythm Heaven and such where you can just jump right in. She even liked BIT.TRIP RUNNER despite how hard it is simply because it doesn't require much explanation to start playing it.

I sort of know what you mean about thinking it is the type of game she would like, but I gotta say... her tastes in video games are almost opposite of her tastes in other forms of media. She sort of just wants instant gratification when she plays video games. I'd almost say she is a lot like Anand in that respect... she'll be way more into a pick-up-and-play arcade-like game than a big RPG with a huge story or something. I actually tried to get her into To the Moon and after about 10 minutes of lots of dialog and no gameplay she was just done with it...

Well, I'm kind of that way, too. I prefer action-based games over anything story-based. Because I'll go to novels or movies for stories. When I'm playing a game, I want it to feel like a game. To me, though, Pikmin 3 is more like an instant gratification action game than an RPG. Running around a course collecting fruit? It's Pac-Man!

Also, you've convinced me. Anand and Shirley were made for each other.

Okay, that's not funny. But it IS almost funny.
04/21/14, 05:27
More than an RPG sure, but for a non-gamer it's not exactly an easy game to just jump right into. I dunno. I'm sure she could figure it out if she wanted to, but usually if she isn't having fun right away she just doesn't care to continue.
04/21/14, 07:33
@kriswright I played with my sister, so I guess that fits the "gal" category. We get so intense, still haven't platinum'd everything yet.

@TriforceBun This game stresses my sister out more than me, but I made her play with me. She still hasn't tried out the solo story mode yet...

If you're using Wiimote/nunchuck, is there any way to move some of the Gamepad stuff onto the TV? I don't know why I can't just have a minimap on the TV. The Gamepad seems mostly kind of superficial and unnecessary.
