Reviews:
Just thought this title needed an official thread. Yesterday, while browsing the interwebs at work, I found a hands-on of the game that mentioned something that I had not heard of anywhere else. Unfortunately, I don't remember where it was, but here's the gist... Pikmin 3 now has an evade move! From Nintendojo "Handy, then, that our new lead character has a nifty dodge ability that sees both him and his band of Pikmin roll to the side in perfect unison whenever danger’s about to rear its ugly head. It took a while to master, especially since there seems to be a small amount of recovery time before you can initiate another one, but it brought a welcome sense of drama to the fights, as well as a greater feeling of control over your large army." Let's give this launch window game some love! ERRR..... Releases August 4th! Well, I tried to post the trailer. Thanks Renjaku! Now lets take a look at Gamexplain of the newest video URL to share (right click and copy)

@JargonYeah, sorry. I didn't mean for that to come off as touchy as it did. Now that I look at it again, I see what you mean. What I was thinking - at the end of a long, long day of work and birthing class - was, "Eh, me and Jargon are about to start a three page long debate about 3D World and what constitutes a True Mario Experience in the Pikmin 3 thread. Better cut that off at the pass. How can I say my piece in as short a reply as possible." So that was my project with that post. But you know how it is where you type something and you think the tone is right and then you look at it again the next day and realize it sounds a lot different than you intended. This was one of those times. I didn't mean "finger-pointing" as an accusation, for instance. I meant, "let's not let this get out of hand and turn into finger-pointing". I used the word hypocrite, but I really didn't mean it in such operatic terms as that. I mean, it's Mario we're talking about here, not politics or morality. The rest, which I agree sounds curt, was really just me trying to compress my feelings into as small of an explanation as possible. So, it was just a failure of writing. Seriously, sorry for that. Sometimes I think I should start using emoticons again. I didn't used to have this problem. :) |

@ZeroI'm working on a review of Pikmin 3 (coming December 2017, probably) and one of the points I make is the number of tensions in the design of Pikmin. It's a game that you could reasonably argue is both complicated and simple (also: totally cute vs. totally brutal, designed for kids and designed for adults, etc.). Shirley's right, there is a lot more to learn in Pikmin than in a standard game, mostly because you're starting from scratch, as Pikmin's pretty much its own genre and you have to learn all the rules of the genre. But, in reality, Steph watched me play for a while, to get the idea of what the game was all about, and then when she tried for herself in the challenge modes it didn't take too long for her to get up to speed. Maybe 20 minutes. So it's intuitive enough to pick up and play, once you know what the objectives are. Especially with the buttery-good Wiimote controls. Of course, she's going to have to want to play it with you in the first place. It's weird, though. Even though I don't know her personally, on one hand I think, "That's the sort of game Shirley probably would actually like." But I'm not sure how easy that'd be to convince her if she didn't respond to it before. In fact, that's another tension I identify - Pikmin has got such a broad spectrum of appeal that should include just about anyone, and yet I think that's partly why the series is doomed to play to a cult audience. I imagine mainstream players often see it as a game made for someone else. Which is a shame. I wish Pikmin was everywhere, with its own cartoon series and action figures and bars of soap. |
