First off: this game is really funny! A lot of thought was put into the dialogue. I want to purchase all the games just to see where the story goes with Rusty and his wife.

Second: the minigames are fun! There are a ton of challenges, with endless modes and streetpass high scores.

Third: Haggling is an enjoyable mechanic. It's rewarding, and fun to see how low you can bring Rusty on his prices. The choice of dialogue, use of items, etc, all impact your bottom line spending on the games.

Games like this are why I love Nintendo so much. It's so freakin' weird and charming. The real-world money haggling mechanic....I really never expected to see something like this in a game. It's really cool.

100% agreed, I feel the exact same way.

I downloaded the demo (while watching two actual baseball games on TV, ha ha) and it's indeed quite charming. I wish the first mini game could have been had for a dollar, though. It would have made me take that initial plunge, and then I would have wanted more, I'm sure. At $2 (while not crazy expensive) I just was still on the fence, considering I figured all the rest would be $2 and I didn't want to invest that much in it I think. Sure is tempting though!

@-JKR-
It's worth it, IMO, all the games are fantastic, and if you didn't buy the first game you didn't even get to do the part where you blow up UFOs by smacking them with baseballs, that's right, you fend off an alien invasion with home-runs. If that's not worth 2 bucks then what is?
04/08/14, 03:14
Hmm, not sure how sold on this game I am. It seems kind of fun but even with the haggling it's like... $2-??? for each mini-game which I will probably realistically play for less than an hour? Not the worst deal or anything, but a bit steep for something that doesn't have be instantly hooked.

Maybe I'll try out one or two of the mini-games and decide if I want to buy the rest.

I'm really liking the umpiring game. I used to umpired little league here and there, and this brings back the good old days. I've got five games so far, A ranked all the endless challenges, with one A+. Still working on the normal challenges for most, and dipped into the dark challenges a bit. There's a lot of content, and I'm enjoying it in short bursts.

Still playing the first game! I have five challenges left. This game is great for thirty-second bursts. Really enjoying it for what it is. If I can get two weeks of enjoyment out of two dollars, that's a good deal to me.

The games get continually cheaper as the game progresses, the most expensive one I think is $2 flat, then it goes down each game from there, I'm currently down to $1.50ish on the games I'm buying, and I know the bottom end is a dollar flat. I just tossed $20 on my account and said "this is for Rusty's, if I get bored, I can use it for something else, whatever I have left, I can put toward something else."

The mini-games are all well made and addicting despite their simple controls, you're just always so laser-focused on what you're doing that you forget you're only hitting A, or moving+tilting (which works perfectly fine, amazingly enough) or using the circle pad. Every single game comes with its own 50 challenges + the "arcade derbies" or whatever, so you can get a decent amount of value out of each title, I have yet to be disappointed by any of the mini-games, I keep thinking "Oh, this'll be the one that's not very fun," but they always have a simple and creative take on it that's very satisfying.

I've gotten so much value out of this game it's ridiculous, it's so fun and addicting. The only thing I wish is that it would just instantly reload when you failed a challenge, having to see the game over screen and then click through a few more menu choices in order to get started again becomes grating in some of the more difficult challenges.
04/15/14, 18:28
@deathly_hallows Tap the screen and hit restart right as you're about to fail, it's quicker that way.
04/15/14, 18:36
@Xbob42
I do that sometimes! Def quicker.

Every game developer should learn a lesson from Mossmouth and the way they handle death in Spelunky.

@deathly_hallows

What's funny about Spelunky is that half the time when I die I get really sad and just quit playing because

But then sometimes I hit restart anyway and end up playing for another hour.

I think you mean take a lesson from Super Meat Boy, they really nailed the "You don't worry about failure" design.

Anyway, I finally bought all the mini-games! Storyline stuff costs a total of $10, with an additional $6 for the four remaining (slightly oddball but still tons of fun) games, bringing the grand total to $16 if you get everything, and also get it all at the lowest price.

Now the coupons can be a little tricky since the order you use them matters as they're percentage based, so I made up a little cheat-sheet for when one of you decides to buy the remaining games!

Use them in the order I listed and you'll be fine, Rusty doesn't go below $1.50 for these titles, so it's the optimal way to do things. Also, the one that comes out to $1.52 is too "complicated" for him so he rounds it down to $1. :p

Great game, very interesting monetization concept, and a lot of fun all around! Worth $16? I personally think so, it's a perfect set of handheld titles with a TON of variety and lots of polish, but obviously it'll come down to personal preference in the end.

Are you guys interested in posting your high scores for the endless challenges? That's one thing the game is missing (friend leaderboards), but we can compare our scores in this thread.

@Secret_Tunnel
I think Spelunky is super fun but I have to remind myself not to take it too seriously, I just assume I won't make it out of the mines so if I get to the jungle that's great, I've never made it out of the jungle!

Spelunky is the kind of game I'm super happy to have on my Vita when I have 5 or 10 minutes to kill, a good run or a bad run I just let it lie.

@Xbob42
I hate super meat boy, not my thing. But yes, any game that instantly restarts you is good!
04/15/14, 19:59
I saw Nintendo's teaser video for this somewhere and it definitely looked intriguing. Fending off an alien invasion with homeruns??? That sounds......aaaaaawesome.
04/15/14, 20:14
I agree about this being a charming game, but one thing that bothers me is that it seems that this game isn't free to play at all. I uderstand this is Nintendo dipping its toes in the free to play market, but usually free to play means that you can go through the whole game without spending a dime. Here, you're pretty much just given a demo and from then on you have to buy more games if you want to keep playing. No ifs or buts. This to me was disappointing since I believe Iwata or someone else from Nintendo said this was a free to play game.
04/23/14, 11:57
@Tranquilo
Yeah, I think Steel Diver: Sub Wars has the better idea of what free-to-play is. Rusty's doesn't have much meat without spending some cash, though the haggling mechanic is rather engaging. Typically, yes, free-to-play means you can go through the whole game without spending a dime, but do you really think Nintendo wants to develop games like that? They are experimenting with different models, and seeing what sticks and what doesn't. I have a feeling Steel Diver will be more successful for them, but we'll see.
04/23/14, 17:22
@Tranquilo

I can't recall Nintendo using the phrase "free to play" to describe Rusty's, but I can be wrong. Every single podcast I listen to, though, seems use "free to play" as shorthand for it while also acknowledging that it isn't really "free to play." Whatevs. I love the heck out of this game. So far I just got the story games. I'm sure I'll get the rest soon enough.
04/24/14, 06:53
I finally purchased all the games (at lowest their prices) and I'm really enjoying most of them.

Also, as for the story, I'm happy for Rusty and his family. We may not reach our dreams, but it's a great consolation to have someone there to catch you as you fall.
