Super Mario 3D World Review (Nintendo Wii U) (9.5)  by

"Meow!"

Never in our lifetimes did we expect Mario and friends to ever utter the sounds of our purring feline friends and yet here on November 22nd, we all will get that chance. Luckily from what many reports say, Super Mario 3D World is an incredible platforming experience that not only looks great in HD but it plays great with the gamepad.

This game is a first in another way as well, with it being the first 3D Mario title to feature simultaneous multiplayer. Now you and your family or friends can run and stomp and pounce together while fighting all sorts of enemies, new and old. Many power-ups make a return but plenty of new ones are featured as well.

There is no doubt about it; the music and graphics look great and this holiday season it's going to be a system-moving release.

Who out there is buying? How many spoilers have you allowed? (I accidentally saw some big ones just researching images for this thread!) What are you most excited for? Soon enough, share your thoughts and tips and tricks!

Please be conscientious to big spoilers once the game releases. Discuss the game openly but spoiler tag any unlockables or be sure to denote when you're talking about late-game content with perhaps a World 7-5 type bold note ahead of a level-based discussion.

Don't forget to update your Negative World catalog for this game! Do so right here!!

I think the controls suffer a little bit from being, essentially, digital controls on an analog stick. I also feel like Galaxy looked better for its platform... obviously it wasn't HD, but the art direction went a long way. I like the Galaxy soundtracks better as well.

Don't get me wrong, 3D World is pretty awesome, but I see where Mop it Up is coming from.

I gave this game a 9.9 and I'm listed amongst the lowest scores, haha.

I have issues with the controls too. Jumping from platform to platform usually works well, but I've never had such trouble stomping an enemy in the series as I have in this game. The isometric fixed viewpoint minus the 3D effect from the 3DS makes stomping even simple goombas a bit of a crap shoot. I usually squish them, but it doesn't feel very clear where I'm going to land.

I do miss the stereoscopic 3D from 3D Land, but besides that this game is beyond amazing. I've enjoyed every level, but one, so far (obviously some more than others). I'm about half way into the Bowser World. It's amazing how the game is still throwing new concepts my way while still working as a cohesive whole.

I think when Mario is in motion he feels great. Moving him around feels better than in Galaxy because he has more momentum. Still, I find the run button a little counter intuitive and unnecessary, and will be addressing it in my review.

I have finished world 3 and have all green stars, stamps and golden flagpoles so far.

Game is awesome.

A great critically acclaimed platformer is Super Meat Boy, which puts Mario to shame in terms of controls and level design.

Even if it was possible for one game could put decades of greatness to shame, you'd have to be talking about a completely different game than the one I played. Especially in terms of level design.

@TriforceBun
No offense but you need to get better. It's okay, I did too. And now that I have, the game is 10x better. Same advice for Mop It Up.

Took me til the last worlds to get really good, then after you just feel it most of the time. Also don't forget to adjust the camera as needed.

Trust me though, practice and get really good and it's so worth it. So so worth it.

@carlosrox

So you have some kind of magic eye that lets you see the game in 3D? I don't think practice is the issue here. We've probably all been playing 3D Mario games for a while and practice or not, it's still hard to determine the distance from objects in a 3D space, especially in a platformer.

@carlosrox I think you're missing the point of what we're saying. I had no trouble beating levels, the game's pretty easy. It isn't about that. I just don't like the way that movement feels.

@Layth I miss the stereoscopic 3D too, I know some people say it doesn't make a difference and that is fair enough for them, but it makes a difference to me. I've been having a bit of trouble perfecting my jumps in 3D World.

Not a huge loss, but I do miss it.

I'm almost at the end of the game! Well, I'm assuming there's post-game content, but I'm about to take on the final stage. I was pleasantly surprised by the little fake-out the game does in world "Castle." And the levels are fast, fun, and addictive to play through!

I still don't really feel like this is a big step above SM3DL, but I thought SM3DL was great, so I can't really complain. I actually love the "four playable characters" thing a lot more than I thought I would--they feel pretty balanced and I keep alternating between them as I go through the game. Like Zero said, time trial goalposts to hit would be a terrific addition and would likely double the length of the game for me. These stages are quite fun to blast through when you desire.

@carlosrox

Hmm. I'm not sure--I think what makes it difficult is the combination of a static camera, 8-way movement and 3D space. Mario 64 alleviated this issue by having a dynamic camera, a melee attack (punching, etc), and far fewer enemies. Sunshine had the water pack, Galaxy has the spin, and 3D Land at least had stereo 3D. It's not completely unintuitive or whatever, but it still feels like a bit of a crapshoot when I jump on enemy heads.

Honestly, the 8 direction controls allow for some really fast paced parts that would basically be impossible with traditional 3D Mario controls. I'm not going to say it's a superior control scheme or anything, it's just different. And I'm glad after two Galaxy games to see something different in my console 3D Mario.

I wouldn't mind seeing 3D Mario games continuing in this direction, but I don't want to see the Mario 64 style controls go the way of the dodo either. We need at least one other big 3D platformer franchise to pop up this generation, preferably with a focus on exploration and adventure.

I know just the right guy for the job. Also #8 agrees with you.

@Zero

#6 reminds me of the sadness that is the fact that Yoshi's Island still isn't out on Virtual Console. I guess I should just give up and emulate.
12/11/13, 04:24
@Jargon Yeah, Nintendo have plenty of other platformer series and so I'd really like it if they try more of them with 3D games. Donkey Kong hasn't had one since DK64, Wario has had only one, Kirby has still never had any, Yoshi has never had any... and I'm sure I'm missing some smaller Nintendo platform series. Mario shouldn't be the only one with 3D. I feel like there's a lot of untapped potential with 3D platformers since we've hardly seen any over the past decade.
12/11/13, 04:26
@Jargon Hmm, my #9 seems a bit prophetic with the two Yoshi games coming next year. And I totally called Nintendo's Wii U launch with #7 (although there might have been hints of it back then, I forget.)

#6 though... I think I wrote that before playing the GBA game, now that I have well... I'd still recommend the GBA version, but the sound is so tinny it kind of ruins what is a spectacular soundtrack on the SNES.

@Zero

If Nintendo wasn't so secretive about this stuff I could at least know if Yoshi's Island was going to come at some point. As it is, I have no idea. It could literally come out on Thursday or never.

Also, I'm finally getting all the cat suit love now. It's gotten to the point where I miss it when it's gone--very fun for speed runs and its sheer versatility.

Water levels still kinda suck, though. It'd be nice to have a suit that feels great in the water (and still decent on land). Maybe the Frog Suit can make its return, complete with tongue-lashing action?
