Super Mario 3D World Review (Nintendo Wii U) (9.5)  by

"Meow!"

Never in our lifetimes did we expect Mario and friends to ever utter the sounds of our purring feline friends and yet here on November 22nd, we all will get that chance. Luckily from what many reports say, Super Mario 3D World is an incredible platforming experience that not only looks great in HD but it plays great with the gamepad.

This game is a first in another way as well, with it being the first 3D Mario title to feature simultaneous multiplayer. Now you and your family or friends can run and stomp and pounce together while fighting all sorts of enemies, new and old. Many power-ups make a return but plenty of new ones are featured as well.

There is no doubt about it; the music and graphics look great and this holiday season it's going to be a system-moving release.

Who out there is buying? How many spoilers have you allowed? (I accidentally saw some big ones just researching images for this thread!) What are you most excited for? Soon enough, share your thoughts and tips and tricks!

Please be conscientious to big spoilers once the game releases. Discuss the game openly but spoiler tag any unlockables or be sure to denote when you're talking about late-game content with perhaps a World 7-5 type bold note ahead of a level-based discussion.

Don't forget to update your Negative World catalog for this game! Do so right here!!

@Hero_Of_Hyrule That looks completely not fun. What do you even get for it, just some stamps you won't get otherwise? Fudge that.

@Zero

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. They're just jpgs!

One of the most dreaded enemies in this game has got to be the flying Dry Bones! Oh man, they're such a nuisance.

Tell me about it. I'm guessing you just did Creeper Creek After Dark? My god, getting the second green star on that level was the stuff of nightmares. With all of the other stuff going on, it's bad enough trying to avoid falling into the water, but throw in the Dry Bones and it becomes brutal.

@Hero_Of_Hyrule Yup. I'd be curious to see someone beat it without the Tanooki or Peach, I couldn't figure it out.

@Hero_Of_Hyrule Or you could just play the game in real multiplayer! ;)

@Zero That and the fifth star on your file.

@Mop it up And then I can show it to my grandchildren someday and be like "you may not know this about me, but back in the days..."

Meh.

@Mop it up

I would, but it puts too much of a strain on the relationships of the players. The main reason I don't is because my family wouldn't be willing to play through the whole game twice.

So, I think I am just about at the very end of the post-game content.

I completed World 11 tonight, and there were definitely some tricky levels towards the end, and a few that were downright brutal. I want to know who the sadist at Nintendo is who is responsible for Blast Block Skyway!! That level can go to hell! The boss rush was also pretty intense, mostly because the Dual Hisstocrat fight can eat up a big chunk of the clock. I decided to always start with that one for that very reason.

Overall, Worlds 10 and 11 were fine for bonus content. Some levels were really difficult, while others were very obvious throwaways. It's only mildly disappointing because of how awesome World 9 was. That got my hopes up for more original and crazy levels, rather than having the remaining levels turn out to be mostly remixes of earlier stages.

As far as World 12 goes, I did the final Toad the Explorer stage, which like the other ones was really cool (though this was the hardest one of the bunch). I think all I have left is the Mystery House Marathon and the "Champions Road" (I'm guessing this is the last level???).

Meh, it really isn't that bad to go through each stage with each character. It's honestly one of those "in the long run" things I plan to do, like I'll keep playing the game and just naturally end up getting that done.

I'm taking my time with the extra worlds. Still in Flower right now.

@Guillaume

Ah, I get what you mean now - not much like that in the game.

Argh I still have to get NSMBU and NSLU down the road, too lol.

@Dynablade

Yeah, I'm with you on that. By the end of this generation, I will have gone through with each character. No rush.
12/03/13, 08:42
I really don't see myself going through every stage with every character. It's a great game but that is the kind of thing that can make me get sick of a great game fast... like how I kind of dulled my RUNNER2 experience a bit by going through every stage on every difficulty level. After awhile it's like yeah, this is a good game but... other things I would rather be doing with my time.

But it's ok, as long as the reward for it isn't actual gameplay, I'm fine skipping that.

One thing I'd love to see in this type of game that would add a ton of replay for me is what DKCR did... the no hit runs and time trial runs. Basically just repackaged the same stages but in a more hardcore manner. Every platformer should do this! Though I never finished the DKCR no hit runs because of the bosses... not sure those should have been included...

@Zero You can already do time trials, essentially, since the game records your fastest time through a level. And you can have up to three ghosts from other people when you replay a level as well, so you can see how others tackled things.
12/03/13, 09:02
@Mop it up True, but there is no clear "goal" to the time trials really. If I recall correctly, you had to finish the DKCR stages in under X amount of time to get um... whatever it gave you... so there was this specific goal to shoot for on each stage. And some of them were pretty challenging.

Well, "beat" the main game, credits rolling. The ending was... interesting. Pretty neat, although too easy and over way too fast for me to agree with the "best end Mario boss ever" praise going around... I'd probably still say New Super Mario Bros. Wii? wins that one.

Time for post-beating-game stuff!

Wait, I can just go directly to World Star? What does getting all the green stars and stamps and stuff do for you then?

@Zero

I was surprised with how easy it was considering how stupid hard other parts of the game can be... and it only gets rougher post-game!

Seriously... this must be one of the hardest Mario platformers ever when you are going for stars and stamps. They weren't playing around this time.
12/03/13, 11:03
Got further in post game content. So fucking good.
12/03/13, 12:46
@Zero

Haha, I love this game, but no way I'm doing that either. Maybe if I had no backlog.

@Zero

That's interesting...since I got all of the green stars/flags/stamps along the way, I beat the game/completed the game at the same time, so I actually just assumed that World 9 was unlocked by that. Hmmm...it must just be World 12 that gets opened by completing all of that, then (because I know I had to fully complete 9-through-11 to unlock it).

Agreed, but that final moment with all the Bowser cats climbing the tower converging on you was pretty awesome.
12/03/13, 16:13
@Secret_Tunnel Definitely. It almost made up for the two very stupid boss fights where Bowser is in a car for some reason. WtF?

Why wasn't Bowser using the powerups the boss fights to begin with? In the first one he'd get a Tanooki Tail or something, and then in the second he'd get the Double Cherry. By the end of the game, you'd finally fight him when he gets ALL of the powerups. The actual car fights were a.) Not very fun, and b.) Didn't make sense. What is Bowser's endgame by driving incredibly slowly and throwing soccer balls? (random!)

@PogueSquadron

The car fights were random but they definitely could have improved on it. Make it more of a chase with those boost pads layered around with more obstacles to avoid. Maybe lava is rushing from behind too so you're at least forced to keep up the pace too. As it is now, you can practically stand still and end up winning anyway, avoiding most of the challenge. Hardly exciting.
12/03/13, 17:19
Holy shit, the levels with the moving red and blue platforms (when you jump)... World 5...hard as heck, even with two players. Can't imagine four! Anyone actually finish these without losing any cherry clones?
