That is, who are you primarily choosing to play as?

So far I've just been choosing random every stage, although it seems there might be certain stages where only certain characters can do things? Hmm.

@GameDadGrant Luigi would probably be my main, if I wasn't going random. Or Peach. Although Peach feels a bit too "cheap", something that I apparently didn't care about back when Super Mario Bros. 2 released but now do.

To all, I heard that beating the game with every character matters. Is that true? Should I keep track of who I use? I mean, I've dabbled with other characters. Is there a way to tell?

If this game follows in the same line as Super Mario 3D Land, then yeah. Something special might unlock if you beat the game with all characters. After all, that's how it worked in the 3DS game...

@DrFinkelstein I've vaguely heard this... I hope it is just another star on the profile or something like that I don't care about and not something you need to unlock actual gameplay content because damn, as fun as the game is, I don't want to have to beat every stage 4 times... that's like borderline Donkey Kong 64 level junk there.

Basically you get a stamp for each character you complete all the levels with. So if you want to FULLY 100% the game, you will indeed have to beat every level with every character.

Luckily though those character stamps are NOT needed to unlock the final bonus world. You just need to get all the stamps that are in levels along with all gold flags and all green stars.

So is there a way to track which characters you've beaten a level with?

I've read that once you've completed all the levels once, they'll show that info on the stat screens for each world.

It'll still be a while before I get that far though, heh

The thing about Luigi is, in Super Mario Bros. 2, he was ridiculous. You could practically jump across the entire screen. Here, he jumps a little higher than Mario, but for the most part, I'm not finding the increase that much of a boon. Instead, he just feels a little harder to control.

In Mario 2, Mario was basically the worst character. Is that safe to say? In 3D Land however, the characters don't feel different enough from Mario to make them seem that much better. In fact, I think their weaknesses stand out a bit more in 3D Land. In Mario 2, it was like "Man...Luigi jumps RIDICULOUSLY high....Peach can hover, and Toad can dig really quickly. What do I need Mario for again?"

Mario was normal in all traits....Toad was quick in every way but could barely jump..... princess could jump high and hover but was slow overall and luigi had the super jump when charged up but was hard to control and not that fast. Only time you really NEEDED Luigi was for that one out of reach warp zone. The rest of the game I prolly used Toadstool

@kgtennispro The gold flag stuff really annoys me. Ug. Ah well, did it for 3D Land, can do it again.

@PogueSquadron I kind of feel like this too, although I definitely miss the jumping boosts when I'm using Mario or Toad.

I'm surprised so many people chose Mario. You use Mario in every other game! I should have picked Toad, I just picked Random because I thought it'd get the least votes.

@PogueSquadron I don't think that's safe to say about SMB2. I wouldn't say there's a worst character in that game because they all have their merits depending on the stage or a person's playstyle. Mario makes for a good all-around type character since his jump is better than Toad and he's faster and stronger than Luigi and Peach, so anyone who prefers having a balance can't go wrong with Mario.

I can't say the same for 3D World. Toad is faster than Mario, but his jump doesn't seem any worse; Luigi can jump higher than Mario, but his running doesn't seem any worse. There may be subtle differences in the aforementioned running and jumping, but it isn't enough to make a difference, and so there's no reason to choose Mario over Toad or Luigi, in terms of ability. Peach actually is noticeably slower than the others, so she has something to offset her floating jump.

Now that I know I'll be able to know what characters I've beaten which levels with, I might as well just hit random every time.

I choose Random, but Toad feels the best to play as. He's fast and the stiffness of the controls is less apparent with him.

You could actually get to that Mario 2 warp zone by jumping on an Albatoss with any of the other characters. Luigi just made it easier to get to.

In light of that, Peach is my character of choice, followed by Toad then Mario.

Luigi just feels too awkward for me nowadays.

I've been switching between Mario and Luigi. Peach is for the wife, and Toad will be for speed runs.

Can't control Luigi comfortably, Peach is slow, and Toad can't jump.

It was Mario, but now that I unlocked Rosalina, I think I might switch to her. I love that spin attack.
