Animal Crossing: New Leaf Review (Nintendo 3DS) (9.7)  by

Animal Crossing... I still remember getting up early before heading to my high school classes just to see what Tom Nook was selling that day. This game series has always held such a dear place in my heart. I think it has to do with the fact that heading to the land of Plaisant, Tranquil, or other towns of mine always being a great escape for me. Making Bells, filling my catalog, and fishing in the ocean were always points of peace for me. While I've been very public about my discontent with AC: City Folk, I have a new-found hope once more for New Leaf. From all the information that has been dished out due to the game's release already in Japan, and Nintendo pushing more information through Nintendo Directs, I am confident this game will be a fresh take on a classic and comforting idea.

The game released in North America on June 9th, 2013 and released in other territories shortly after.

Please use this thread for all discussion on the game. If you would like to make trades or visit towns, please use the specific Animal Crossing New Leaf Trading Thread for further assistance. It makes more sense to keep this focused on the gameplay and game discussion while leaving bartering out of it. There are no Friend Codes this time around for Animal Crossing, which is a blessing! Many of us have already befriended ourselves via the 3DS Friend Codes Thread thread. That thread will be where we continue to befriend each other and trade 3DS IDs for the sake of visiting each other's towns.

Many many years ago I discovered a wonderful Animal Crossing website which has a great catalog feature set up. Now, the new game will mean it'll take time for the site to get a full correct catalog up and running but I expect it to work beautifully once more to allow anyone to track their catalog there. You can find this website at the Animal Crossing Community page. They also have forums there which are very active right now in anticipation of this game. Granted, the general age of the members of that site fall a bit lower than here, but I've found over all the years I've been there that the discussion is still mostly pleasant and easy.

Lastly, I want you all to enjoy the music from this new game or any of the games, whenever you want. The following site will allow you to hear the "Xam" or "Xpm" music that would naturally occur in your life right now as if you were in the game. You can select from any of the Animal Crossing games and the music will continually loop until the hour changes. It's pretty cool. You can find that page here. It's by default at the City Folk music.

So again, everyone enjoy this game! Enjoy this discussion! If you're interested in being negative about the title, just find your way to a different thread for that because this thread is about the experience and meant to bring the community together during the launch of one of the most community driven games Nintendo offers.

Say hello to Kapp'n, cause we're about to make it into town on June 9th.

(One more quick note; Keep an eye out for the game's review, which I will write sometime in the end of June probably.)

Just snagged all my Halloween furniture BTW. If you didn't get all the spooky set in the stores, you can get pieces you missed by giving Jack some candy.

He may also give you one of the creepy series, but that's rare. To guarantee a creepy series gift, you have to give him a lollipop that you can get from scaring villagers. You can only get one lollipop per villager though so if you've got the full 10 you should be fine.

I have both my villagers loaded up with candy, so I hope that'll be enough to snag the whole set between the two of us.

How does scaring work? Talk to them once to get a clue and then go back to scare later, or do villagers give clues for other villagers? What's the best way to go about that?

@DrFinkelstein

Villagers outside give clues if you give them candy. Also you will only ever have about half of the villagers inside ready to be scared at any one time. You need to save and reset to shuffle them around once you've got lollipops off the first lot.

Or, with the help of this table and this personality chart, you can figure out what mask to use for yourself and forget about clues.

If you screw up and use the wrong mask, you can simply exit their house and try again.

I think I'm lacking on candy (I'll have seven pieces and I currently have eight villagers), but I have five of the six masks (missing the Beetle). Maybe I can make this work...

@ludist210

You can get more candy from the villagers. Either scare them again after getting the initial lollipop or win a minigame.

I didn't see it on a guide, but one of my villagers (I think the snooty female) told me a couple times that sitting there was great. Sitting at my tree reveals my twisted personality, in that I've only let one villager move out in the nearly 6 months I've been playing. They say if you really love them, you'll let them go. My villagers get all my smothering, letter-writing, clingy hate.

@Shadowlink

Awesome, I must load them all down. Can I do that all day or just after 6:00 p.m.?
10/31/13, 15:25
@ludist210

After 6.

Just finished up scaring every villager in town. It took a while because I didn't have all the masks ready. I didn't collect all the furniture, but I'm glad I got the special items from Jack.

First holiday in New Leaf, and it was quite fun!

@anon_mastermind

You got all the Creepy items from Jack but not the Spooky from the store/Jack? What special items?
11/01/13, 03:46
@DrFinkelstein
Yeah, I got the creepy items. I didn't buy all the spooky furniture mainly because it was expensive and I rather pay off my loan.
11/01/13, 03:57
Thanks to gtarrant I got all the spooky furniture and I got all creepy stuff as well tonight. Candy wasn't really an issue so I didn't need to buy as much as I did. And I'm glad I read about saving and reloading to rotate the villagers who were inside.

@gojira

Charlise never did go inside. But Jack was awesome and gave me the last Creepy item I needed, and with regular candy no less!

I too bought WAYYYYY too much candy. I bought it every day. And yet, I probably needed maybe three or less. I was able to win those tricks often, even when trying to lose at Rock/Paper/Scissor. lol Oh well.

I'm looking forward to raking in interest on the $4 million bells I have in the bank right now.

Time for catching new bugs and fish!
11/01/13, 04:53
@DrFinkelstein

I think I had to restart a couple of times to get everyone inside.

And having too much candy led me to catching my first ant. I think you could use fruit in the earlier games, but it didn't seem to work for me. I knew I could look it up but I'm not too concerned with catching all the bugs so I just left it.
11/01/13, 05:10
@DrFinkelstein I'll take any extra candy you have. :D

*licks lips*
11/01/13, 05:17
i swapped out frequently with my 4 characters, so while i got the entire creepy set, i have extras as i wanted, but not of all i wanted the extras of.
I also got a jack o' lantern and pumpkin head mask (due to getting questions wrong and them turning my stuff into things)

Don't forget the new month present at the post office, i really like it : D
11/01/13, 13:29
@Mop it up

You'd really want it? I can hold it for you. I was just going to resell what's left.
11/01/13, 14:25
So anyone found a mole cricket yet?

Is the sound easy to hear? I've been running around a bit and haven't heard anything.
11/02/13, 14:53
@Shadowlink

I did say night. It was tricky to find the right spot to dig but I did with my first one.
11/02/13, 15:41
@DrFinkelstein Yup Yup.

Um... do you still need that modern wood TV from way back when, and the gold? And that fossil, megacero something or other? Looks like I kept missing whenever you were on...
