Rayman Legends on the Wii U

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Rayman Legends on the Wii U!

I didn't see a dedicated thread for Rayman Legends, so I thought I'd make one! I've also added it to the Database for anyone who's interested. I was having difficulty adding a video though, so if anyone could help with that, I'd appreciate it!

I'm really struck by how beautiful the game looks. Apparently Rayman isn't even a 3D model. They said in an IGN video that it's just how they've used lighting in the game to give Rayman and his buddies more color. It looks like a freaking painting in motion to me.

So far, it looks like Legends uses the Gamepad in some really cool ways. I'm curious to see how it will work as a single player game. Ubisoft has not announced whether or not the game will retain any online functionality.

Played a ton of this game tonight. It's awesome, as expected. I've 100%'d the first 4 or so stages in the first world.

Those daily challenges are really fun and mad addicting. I was trading best scores with Octorockin for a while, trying to catch Cryojin's score but I just came up short. I got it to about within a tenth of a second of his score, even though I flubbed up at one point, but before I could try again Ubi's servers went down! Next time you won't be so lucky, Cryojin!!!

But yeah, competing against your friends' ghosts is really fun. I think I spent more time tonight doing that then actually playing through the main levels.

And those Murfy stages are pretty awesome, I'm a bit surprised after hearing some backlash towards those. Unlike some "diversity" stages commonly found in platforming games (i.e. the flying levels in Origins, or the underwater levels in Wario Land: Shake It!), these hold up pretty well against the normal stages and almost feel like they could be their own separate game. Those stages are tailor-made for the Game Pad, in fact I'm not sure I could imagine playing those on anything else. Granted, I'm still early in the game, but the first couple of those stages were really cool. Between this and ZombiU, Ubi is doing really great things on the Game Pad and making the importance of both screens a very integral part of the gameplay.

I did hear that on the Wii U when you play as Murphy single player you can't control Rayman. If true that's pretty bad, doesn't happen on the other systems.
That actually sounds a lot worse, to be honest. I feel like controlling both characters in single-player wouldn't be any fun at all. The way they've done it on the Wii U gets rid of a lot of that clunkiness and allows you to just focus on the Game Pad screen. I imagine on other systems these levels just feel like worse, more frustrating versions of the regular stages whereas on the Wii U, they feel like something different altogether.

Well it is prudent to remember I didn't play the Wii U version, so I'm sure they pulled it off just fine, but I like to play Rayman as a speedy/rhythm platformer and usually you have to worry about running and jumping, but with Murphy you also have to worry about pressing B/Circle at the right time. It actually adds to the experience, like an extra layer of challenge. It's not bad. Murphy isn't really a character like I guess he is on the Wii U, he's an extra ability/mechanic. It's just pressing a button, and it works, in conjunction with your control of Rayman.

But regardless this game is delightful and you all should get to enjoying it, on whatever system you want. I recommend you don't miss out on this unless you just hated Origins, it's very very fun.

It's not. I played the demo on 360 and those levels are slow, clunky and terrible.

No they're not.

It's impossible to choose which platform you want to switch with just a button, so you have to position yourself in the right invisible area that toggles the button input from one platform or rope to the other, but if you move to avoid an enemy just before you press the button, you may get out of this invisible area, activate the wrong platform/rope, and cause your death...

Slow.
Clunky.
And terrible.

It's pretty obvious those levels weren't designed for a standard controller. Apart if they redid what I played in the demo, but I doubt it.

That's why it's fun. You have to press the button at the right time not at any time. It adds to the frenetic challenge of rhythmic and speedy platforming. If Rayman moves in the rhythm of quarter notes, Murphy is an eighth note you add. It's coo'. Maybe if you play Rayman slow it sucks, but who plays Rayman slow?

But anyway, what matters isn't to win an argument on the internet, what matters is that I'm loving the game, even the Murphy sections. Thats all that matters to me. And I will not speak further about the Wii U version without having played it because I think that's disrespectful, all I'm doing is defending the PS360 versions

The game is phenomenal, I just got to 20,000 lums under the sea :sogood:. The art direction there is gorgeous

How do the other versions handle the challenge rooms where you just play as Murphy, slicing ropes and pulling up platforms? Do you just mash the B/Circle button over and over again, or do you hit it when an icon pops up or something?

@GelatinousEncore
You're making it sound like it was some genius design though when really it's a workaround that only exists since Ubi hit the panic button and went multi plat.

Not saying you're doing it but it sickens me how the original vision is the "tacked on" experience according to some reviewers who take bribes.

@PogueSquadron I thought the challenge rooms weren't IN the other version? I hope not, everything about Murfy is just fucking awful.

@Xbob42
Not in the Wii U version he isn't.

@carlosrox The Wii U version is probably the best, no doubt. But the others are very serviceable, definitely not terrible, not broken, maybe a little bit clunky. Still worth playing

I'm currently tackling the 3rd world and have been feeling that there's too many Murphy levels which feel like an iPad game, and on top of that they force me to take my eyes off the tv screen during those Murphy levels. Everytime I see that I'll have to switch to Murphy I cringe. Murphy levels would've been fine as a one or two off levels to serve as a break in pacing. But it seems like they represent half the game or something.

I'll admit, the Gamepad stuff was never what really interested me about the game. Some people seem to be loving it, while others think it's just a gimmick that forces you to play the game differently than you'd like to. Definitely want to play it on Wii U though, because the "environment activation" doesn't really seem as fun to me. Gonna have to wait for a game sale (and some severe backlog surgery).

I beat it today. The final Living Dead world is just delightful.

I was afraid they were gonna do the same thing as Rayman Origins, they showed a really cool Tetris level for that game at E3 and then they cut it out, I thought they were gonna cut out the musical level with the grannies from E3 2012 but THANKFULLY they didn't!!

@GelatinousEncore

Didn't read the spoilers, but I'm excited nonetheless. I was so proud of myself when I finally beat LotLD in Origins. That was so crazy!

Finally got back to this tonight...played quite a bit more, I'm about 2/3 of the way through the second world right now. I'm really digging the variety of the stages in this game, and I am appreciating how well each style of level holds up. I don't think I've played two stages back-to-back where one felt too much like the other or anything.

The first music stage was really freaking awesome. A lot of fun. Will hopefully get to play a lot more of this on Sunday.

I freed Rayman. Finally. My kids are loving it. I'm loving it. Michel Ancel's direction heals all wounds.

Is it still possible to download the free challenge thingie, or was that just until the game was released?
09/24/13, 06:16
@Mop it up

I ran it today cause it downloaded an update but it was probably just as the full game released as it now says the challenges are no longer available but that the full game is now for sale on the eShop.

@VofEscaflowne

It seems to be updating every time I use my Wii U. I guess I should delete it, but I wonder what that's about.
