Game & Wario is out! I grabbed it at around midnight on Sunday off the eShop, but I haven't played it too much yet. Mostly just multiplayer with a little bit of single player sprinkled in. The presentation feels like Wario Ware, but it's mostly larger mini game collections insted of microgames. The multiplayer stuff is hit and miss so far, Sketch is really fun, while a couple others are so-so. I've only played 2 player so far, looking to have some 4 player action soon. Note that all the multiplayer games (so far, anyway) don't require wii remotes, just the gamepad. In the single player games, so far I like what I've played, there is a bit of depth to the games too, and plenty of unlockables in traditional Wario Ware fashion. Arrow is fun, skiing is fun, the camera one is a bit simple for my liking, and patchwork seems a bit boring, those are the only ones I've played so far and there are 8 more to unlock. There is a cool Miiverse sketch mode, where you get 60 sec to sketch a random item and post to miiverse. Anyone else pick this up? URL to share (right click and copy)

My library request finally came in, so I've been Game & Wario-ing it up for the past three or four days. At first, I was kind of underwhelmed by what seemed like a small package of flimsy games, but additional modes/levels get unlocked as you clear certain goals. And there are a veritable shit-ton of funny little unlockable gadgets. Game & Wario has definitely grown on me. Getting a gold medal in the Measurement game was so freaking satisfying.
I don't want to cover every game individually, but the single-player stuff is pretty fun. It's decent at worst, and the highlights like Arrow and Gamer are pretty awesome.
Multiplayer seems like good fun, although I was just kind of dry running it by myself. The Fronks game (Islands) is simple, but really cool (and very similar to the awesome Sorry Sliders). Fruit is also pretty cool. Seemingly.
The Miiverse Sketch mode is pretty slick, also. It's essentially a minute-long round of Pictionary with a goofy word combination of your choosing, except that your sketch automatically populates Miiverse. What's even cooler is that you can suggest more goofy word combinations. The ones that are chosen most become "trending". Very effective and cool integration of social gaming here. Even just suggesting word combos and seeing what people make of them is fun. Take note, stupid "Share your score on Facebook?" games. Nintendo's takin' you to school!
G&W is definitely a weird-ass, motley package, overall, but it's a likable, innovative one. My biggest takeaway is just how FUNNY it is. I mean, when's the last time you literally laughed out loud while playing a game? It's already happened quite a few times for me with G&W. I'll definitely pick this one up down the road. It may not check many (any?) boxes, but I sure am glad that it exists.
Also, thanks for the Yeah!, canonj! I'm a terrible artist, so I'll take any charity I can get. |

How are people who chose this a reward enjoying it? I've made it through each game once to get the end cutscene and so far I've felt compelled to go back to Gamer, Patchwork, Shutter and Ashley. Gamer has the most clear Warioware roots, and the added mother mechanic really does make it very tense. Plus it really couldn't be the same without the Gamepad. Quite a clever use. Patchwork is super simple but strangely addicting. I made it through all the easy puzzles, of which there were many, so I'll be interested to see if the harder ones are more fun. Ashley feels like it could be an iPhone game. Pretty fun, if simple. I know people liked the Pirates one when it was Shield Pose but I couldn't figure out how to do the second, posing section. I probably had to actually stand up and I was sick at the time so didn't want to. The Pictionary multiplayer mode is fun, but I've only had a chance to play two player. I wish my copy was physical so I could bring it over to play 4 player with my nieces, would surely be a blast. Miiverse sketch is great since you can see what people do with your suggestions. I'm sure I wasn't the first to do this but I suggested dignity and got great Simpsons references, plus some actually great drawings of dignity surprisingly. Only two people chose Hall & Oates though. The stuff you unlock with tokens is mostly not very exciting, little tips for the games for example, but there is some delightfully weird stuff as well like one where you can pull a rope to trip school girls and penguins for some reason. Anyone have favorite games or suggestions for getting the most out of this title? |

I finally got around to playing this game recently, so I might as well drop my ratings here even though it's long past the discussion.
Arrow: It's a pretty standard shooting gallery game, but the overall gameplay is solid enough so it can be fun. My main beef with it is the controls, aiming with the GamePad simply doesn't work nearly as well as the Wiimote's IR, and it also lost its calibration a couple of times with no way to reset it mid-game. 6/10
Shutter: I kinda liked this one, it's a decent use of the GamePad, though it can be a bit dizzying. It isn't always easy to know how to point the GamePad at the TV to aim it at a person I find from looking at the TV, so I ended up looking mostly at the GamePad to scan for the people. I'm glad it didn't use Miis. 7/10
Ski: This reminds me of the F-Zero game in Nintendo Land which was a bit of a mess. This game isn't really any better, it's still got poor controls and doesn't really use the TV. 3/10
Patchwork: This one could be a DS game but it's still decent. The latter set of puzzles had a few stumpers and the challenge mode definitely makes most puzzles challenging, I imagine it would help to have puzzle shapes memorised. 7/10
Kung Fu: I like the idea of this game, but once again I don't like the tilt controls. Still, it was fun to make it through the courses quickly and look for the scrolls. I wouldn't mind seeing some more levels for this game because I think there's more potential for things like watching out for incoming hazards on the TV whilst also watching the footing on the GamePad. 7/10
Gamer: This is the best use of the GamePad in this game, by far. Trying to play a game on the GamePad and also watching out on the TV was a lot more tense than I was expecting. This could be a Shocktoberfest game, seriously. It's way scarier than some stupid zombies. Anyways, WarioWare is also a good game to use for this because it's fairly simple to play and has interludes between microgames, so it gives plenty of opportunity to check the TV screen without messing up in the game. I also thought this was straight up a port of GBA WarioWare, but I think it actually has some alterations and maybe even a few new ones. I'm not familiar enough with GBA WarioWare to know for sure. 8/10
Design: This is a decent idea for a game, but, it's pretty simple. It's only drawing simple lines and shapes, and there's nothing else to it. It needed more to really make a game out of it. 3/10
Ashley: Yet again, I like this game but not the controls, they're the main reason I find it difficult to obtain the default high score on each stage. 6/10
Taxi: This was an interesting game idea, and no tilt controls to boot! But I'd like to switch the views and have the taxi on the TV with the map on the GamePad. Still, it was fun to drive around and shoot the UFOs and catching the passengers, and there's also a few secret points to find. 7/10
Pirates: This game was miserable. Motion controls just don't work well for rhythm games, and this one is particularly poor because it doesn't give much feedback on what I'm doing wrong, especially during the posing part. 2/10
Bowling: Bowling has been way overdone at this point, and this one doesn't really offer anything new aside from the different sizes of pins. 4/10
Bird: This bird seems to show up in all these Wario games and I'm still not sure why. In any case, this is a decent Game and Watch style game, I had some fun with it, but didn't find it too compelling to try and get a crazy score or anything. 5/10
The stuff earned with tokens provides a decent incentive to replay games, it's nothing mind-blowing but the little trinkets and tidbits and such make decent achievements. I don't think I like enough of the games to try and get all 240 though.
Overall: 5/10 This was a good freebie game to get because I'm glad I didn't pay money for it. |
