ACen 2013: Top 10 Nintendo-related Cosplayers (Plus a Bunch More Cosplay!) [top ten]

ACen 2013 was only my second time capturing cosplay in photo form (C2E2 2013 being my first) and I feel the same now as I did then; it is essentially a meta game of the convention. Think of it as being a bit like Pokémon Snap. You have to stay constantly alert because you never know where and when these strange creatures (I say this lovingly!) will appear, and when you see one pop out, you need to act fast or you may lose your chance.

Two of my biggest failures (which would definitely have made my list had I gotten the photos) were a pretty wicked Viewtiful Joe that strolled right past me and disappeared into the crowd before I had time to react, and a huge Koffing that I saw from a distance, figured I would run into again, and... never ran into again.

Still, I managed to do a pretty decent job of it, I believe.

This isn’t simply a top 10 list, however. I decided to make it a combination top 10 list and general cosplay photo feature, so I’m throwing in a bunch more photos at the bottom, including non-Nintendo and even non-video game stuff.

Enjoy! And make sure to let me know in the comments which ones are your favorites!

Vega (Street Fighter series)
Vega has always been one of my favorite Street Fighter characters, even if I totally suck using him (or anyone else for that matter.) This guy pulled off a pretty slick Vega, in my eyes.

Blue Pikmin (Pikmin series)
I noticed this Blue Pikmin girl while eating lunch, and I knew that I had to get a picture, so I hastily shoved down the rest of my food and chased her down. I swear I wasn't stalking you Blue Pikmin girl!

Pikachu and Gengar (Pokémon series)
I'm not the biggest Pokémon fan (boo!) so perhaps one of you can explain this to me... why are Pikachu and Gengar boxes? Is this a thing from Pokémon or were they just taking some creative liberties? Either way their costumes turned out pretty neat.

Deku Scrub Link (The Legend of Zelda series)
I tend to gravitate towards the costumes that took some obvious work from head to toe, and this Deku Scrub Link was a pretty neat one. The jar was a nice little touch.

Phanto (Super Mario Bros. series)
Ok, I get that this wasn't really a costume so much as a sprite map printed out on a big piece of paper and held in front of his face. But it's Phanto, yo! And it really stood out from a lot of the other cosplay that I saw, so it makes the list.

Travis Touchdown Twins (No More Heroes series)
Two Travis Touchdowns for the price of one! Both of them pulled it off pretty well, although in retrospect, I should have asked them to cross swords with each other. That would have made for a pretty epic photo!

Ms. Pac-Man (Pac-Man series)
I have a lot of respect (and concern) for those who go around in costumes that restrict the movement of their arms. This was a pretty sick Ms. Pac-Man too, although I wish that I got a better angle.

Chef Kirby (Kirby series)
This one might not seem very impressive at first, until you realize that it's a full-grown man in a 3 foot tall costume. It doesn't look like much when he stands up, but when he crouches and waddles it is a damn fine Kirby.

Midna (The Legend of Zelda series)
I'm not sure if this was the infamous Midna cosplayer that many of us have seen before, but whatever the case, she nailed it. Gotta wonder how tiring it gets to walk around with that huge thing on your head though.

Mr. Game & Watch (Game & Watch series)
Oh yes. Behind the costume was a man who was clearly having a lot of fun playing the character, interacting with the crowd in many fun and hilarious ways. It's a little weird that Mr. Game & Watch's feet are a full 6 inches above his own feet, but whatever. It's Mr. Game & Watch!!!

As stated above, here are a bunch more of the cosplay photos that I took, all in one place. Bam!

Video Game Cosplay

Three of the cast of the Phoenix Wright games

One of the many Silent Hill Pyramid Heads that I saw

A pretty solid Jack from the Mass Effect series

Yep, there was even someone representing Catherine there!

And I saw this elderly woman who turned her walker into a kart to be Peach from Mario Kart

Proto Man from the Mega Man games + a hilarious photo bomber

Hector? from the Fire Emblem series

A bunch of Halo Spartans (be still, Stephen’s heart...)

One of the many, many pairs of Mario and Luigi

Morrigan from Darkstalkers (or Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom, to make her Nintendo-relevant)

A closer shot of the “Nintendo Power” panel, including a pretty wicked Captain Falcon

Dante from the Devil May Cry games posing with some fans

The Castle Crashers again (trying to get all of my cosplay in one place here)

Other Assorted Cosplay

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers heck yeah!

Iron Woman, although the lighting in this one didn't turn out so well

Yep, this guy again, who I have been informed is Sailor Bubba and he has his own Bobble Head!

Full Metal Alchemist, one of my favorite animes

The obvious question can be asked... why not Zoidberg?

The Little Mermaid, which seemed kind of random

Some guy in a chicken head, no clue if this is from something or just a random chicken head

Not really sure what she is from, she was just sitting there in the middle of the floor

Because Stache seems to think I’m the only fan... a guy from The Aquabats!

L from Death Note being all L-like

No idea what these are from, to be honest. Anyone?

And that is pretty much all that I have for cosplay photos. Remember to tell me in the comments who your favorites were, whether Nintendo-related or not!

Actually, there are a lot more parodies of Touhou, probably including an RPG. Game parodies of touhou include Touhoumon, Touhou soccer, fighting games, I think an earthbound parody, and probably many more. Most of the characters themselves don't really tie in, but of course in a fantasy land (literally what gensokyo means, eastern fantasy land) I guess anything is possible. Some characters actually have a reason to be there, such as Suika, who is an Oni, or Okuu, the raven who resides in hell. There are many, many, MANY characters, and some have a tragic backstory. Koishi Komeji could originally read minds, but due to the hate from everyone around her, she closed her heart away and released an even more powerful ability; the power of the subconscious. Flandre Scarlet is a vampire who is physically and mentally about five years old, but because of her extreme power of pretty much killing anyone she sees, she was locked away for 495 years, pretty much making her go insane. It might seem like a bunch of girls shooting bullets, but the series is actually pretty awesome. :3

@rini Oh no I just meant how did you find the site, but I guess you just answered it for me... from Acen!
06/02/13, 05:10
Oh, the site? xD Sorry, I was here to see if my cosplay made the list. derp :3

I'm not sure if I ran into you. Post it!

Cool stuff! The Phoenix Wright cosplayers are my favorites here, and the fact that they're putting the pressure on a garbage bin is pretty funny. You can make up all kinds of situations for that picture!

http://abi-bunny.deviantart.com/art/May-ACEN-Pic-372475460 I went on Saturday. I don't really know if I saw anyone on the list or not, there were so many people! @_@

Hmm, I don't think that I saw you. There were so many people there! It was pretty overwhelming for my first time, you basically have to have your camera in your hand and ready to snap the entire time.

Yeah. My sister and I had to wait FIVE HOURS to get my badge (she was selling stuff there with her friends but she stayed with me anyway ;w;). It was very crowded there, but I saw cardboard gundam, many Ash and Misty's, and my sister said she saw an Ash and Misty couple who had a baby, and about a million mikus in line. Gotta admit, it was very fun afterwards seeing the artists area... Except the yaoi. e_e

@Zero

Hey! I found another thigh-baring lady in your L from Death Note pic that I missed before! Good work!

ALSO (ALSO), I found out today on the Wendy Williams Show that ALYSSA MILANO was the inspiration for Ariel!? (REALLY!!!) INCREDIBLE.

EDIT- Looking at your pictures again, I noticed that Blue Pikmin Girl isn't facing the camera...as she is taking a picture of someone else ALONG with somebody else. What were you passing up to take a picture of BPG?

@rini

What is yaoi? Anime and that stuff isn't really my scene. Might as well have said "blrbhgb."

I don't even understand this question. There are literally people in costumes everywhere that you go, by the hundreds, no one takes pictures of everyone in a costume, people just focus on what they care about. I honestly don't remember who she was taking a picture of.

@Zero

They were looking at something more interesting than Blue Pikmin Girl, as even she didn't even care about being photographed (most people, when being photographed, look at the camera..). I'm sure you saw it (I guess you don't remember), unless you were creepily sitting in a potted plant covertly taking her picture.. Oh gosh, Z...please tell me it wasn't like that... (You did leer her from afar.. What are you, a Spearow?)
06/06/13, 02:58
People only stop and pose for photos if someone asks, and I rarely asked, I just kind of walked around and stumbled upon good shots. I only asked myself in a few cases.

And as a huge Pikmin fan, I can honestly say that there is not much more interesting than a blue Pikmin girl.

@Zero

It just seems weird because nearly every other photo is a straight on shot (which looks like "hey, can I take your picture?" preceded it), with the exception of BPG and Ms. Pac-Man. Lady Iron Man is giving a 3/4 shot (but I imagine like 8 paparazzi dudes snapping off shots as she is bangin'), and other ones are kinda candid, but they aren't really posing either. Even the schmuck in the trenchcoat is looking at you.
06/06/13, 03:07
Eh, just a matter of circumstances. Not everyone was posing when I took a picture. Ms. Pac-Man was on her way out the door and luckily stopped to talk to some people so I got that one, but not from the best angle. Mario Kart lady was just kind of chilling by herself looking at her phone or something. Chicken head man was getting ready to cross the street, luckily he just happened to be in a decent pose. Pyramid Head was heading down the stairs while I was heading up the escalator. Aquabats dude was just kind of chilling on the floor.

I knew that I wanted a picture of the blue Pikmin girl but she seemed busy and I didn't want to bother her so I just took what I could.
