Hello, true believers! Welcome to Negative World's newest RPG-centric Club Hub, springing off the heels of the Fire Emblem Club. Way back when, Nintendo Power introduced a monthly walkthrough / in depth Role Play Game section (right around the beefiest SNES RPG era), but since they aren't around anymore to use it, Negative World will bring it out of the ashes, dust it off, and roll with it (two things of note: #1, this is not in reaction to Nintendo Force Magazine at all -- I know that because I thought of it in the shower this morning, so THERE; and #2, I just looked up "Epic Center RPG" on Yahoo, and there is apparently another RPG-based site that has that, ugh. I guess we're looking at a "Ghostbusters" / "Real Ghostbusters" thing now... Whatever..).

For anyone who grew playing SNES RPGs, and were a fan of them, they surely resonated to the point where they still hold office as some of your favorite games of your entire videogame life, systems, generations, and decades later. The NW Epic Center (run primarily by myself, with the aid of some special friends occasionally) will help to expose some of those games that didn't quite get the recognition they deserved, and also to relive some of the greatest games EVER as we play through them again -- together -- and open up a whole new dialogue on these lost treasures.

Next up..

Chrono Trigger is held by many (myself included) as The Greatest RPG of All Time, pun not intended. It is a benchmark title in the genre, and even after 20 years the game is discussed daily and held in high regard, even in the face of juiced-up, HD "masterpieces." Is simpler sometimes better? Sure, but we're not talking "Dragon Warrior" simple here; we're talking 16-bit perfection at its finest. I'm personally a bit worried about pursuing this game once more; it's been a long time since my last jog through it, and I'm afraid I might have the rosiest pair of glasses that any shot of nostalgia could ever produce. We find out later this month, for better or for worse. (C'mon, it's gonna be fine -- we're talking Chrono Trigger here!! THE BEST, JERRY, THE BEST!!)

Sunday, August 30th marks the start of Week 1 (if you prefer to start your own quest AFTER Sunday, like Monday, or Tuesday, or Wednesday, thats fine!). Golden Sun ran 6 Weeks. GameDadGrant will be our DUNGEON MASTER for this one, and we figure the playthrough to run about the same length. Less than two months. I'm told the total quest should last you between 20 and 30 hours.

See ya soon!!

So yeah since the two final weeks were quite short, I went ahead and beat the game ahead of schedule. It was...good, I suppose.

@nate38

OH NATE, YOU DOG.
05/30/13, 00:52
Nate dog, that's my name, don't wear it out
05/30/13, 01:10
Alright, TONIGHT is the night.

Anyone know how many hours I'm looking at here? Just looking to finish Week 4, not "Nate" it.

@nate38

How do you feel about being a verb? Have you ever been?

I think I've been..usually not good things.
05/31/13, 00:35
@Mr_Mustache

I'd say 2-3 hours, tops. It's only 2 dungeons, and of the 4 guild quests, only 2 take much time.
05/31/13, 01:39
@Mr_Mustache You're close, PS2. No manuals on the PS2, just a little backstory on the games and a few tips.

Speaking of, one of the tips is kind of a spoiler. It tells you to use SANER when facing the final boss, and then it shows a screenshot of the final fight. Seeing the form of it doesn't really tell you anything, but seeing which characters you have there is a little bit of a spoiler since you know who won't be leaving your party. And it isn't really a very good tip anyways, since I always use SANER in boss fights.
05/31/13, 03:29
I finished the Weapons Plant. Just have to do the Air Castle and I'm done with Week 3. Kind of sounded like that wasn't a cakewalk for most of you...
05/31/13, 03:43
@VickiL It was like walking with a ten-tier wedding cake which had its layers held in place using toothpicks.

What are your levels?
05/31/13, 03:48
@VickiL

Yeah, it's just longer and more confusing than anything in the game to that point.
05/31/13, 05:57
@Mop it up

Wow, that a bunch of poop about the screenshot. Sorry to hear that.

@Koovaps

Cool beans. I'll try to skunk it up soon.
05/31/13, 07:10
Wow, Dark Force just WILL NOT quit, eh? What a sneaky sneak!

Done with Week 4, got everything. 3/4 on Optional stuff. I think I Home Menu'd out as I was falling asleep on 4/4.
05/31/13, 13:44
My characters are all between 30 and 32, I believe. Something like that. I usually take it slow in a dungeon, picking up all the treasures, and warping out to heal before heading straight to the boss. That helps me gain a few levels along the way, too. Sounds like I may need to do that two or three times with this next place! Though I just have the Air Palace left, I'll count in it taking me at least two hours to get through.
05/31/13, 16:18
Still in week 3. Had to quit after an hour last night. The Air Castle is no joke! I finally found all the treasures (I think) and made my way to the boss, Lashiec. Son of a bitch killed me three times! Thankfully the path to him is pretty straight forward and not too long, but come on. My highest level character is a 32, lowest 28. I tried multiple DEBAN and WARLA casts, along with TELELE, BARRIER and SANER. No matter what I do he can still kill my entire party within 5 or 6 rounds. And I can only seem to get one (maybe two) hits in on him because I'm constantly on the defensive, healing, buffing. And when someone goes down, they stay down. Without buffs, he can one/two hit kill everyone. And even when I REVER a downed mate, they die before the end of the round anyway.

Did anyone else have a problem with this battle? Is this the fucking doom trees battle again or am I just not leveled enough?
05/31/13, 18:19
@Jew Drop

I talked to you on the phone about this. Not a f'n doom trees scenario.
05/31/13, 23:42
Just finished with week 4. It went pretty quick and I only got to level 40 because I ran from probably 80% of the random battles because I didn't feel like messing with them.
06/01/13, 00:01
@DeputyVanHalen

I think I'm 41 right now w/ Chaz. *high five*

EDIT- Where did Dark Weres and XBOB go? Still on Week 1? Hmm..

Anyone else get in before the streetlights came on?
06/02/13, 09:54
Here we are at the final week for Phantasy Star IV. Fantastic job to all of you still playing this wonderful game. All that's left is the sprint to the finish line, so let's get on with it...

Week 5

GOALS

- Head to Rykros and prove your worth at both the Courage and Strength Tower.

- Obtain the necessary weapon back on Dezolis at the Esper Mansion, then back on Motavia, enter The Edge and fulfill your Destiny!

Optional content

- Before heading to The Edge, return to Rykros and enter the Anger Tower to obtain a final useful tool in your quest to the end.

I very nearly finished the Air Palace late last night (or early this morning). I failed at almost exactly midnight and went to bed. I saved part-way though, but I'll have to explore the basement again.
06/02/13, 18:20
@VickiL

Excellent! Be warned, though. I had more trouble with that boss than any other in the game. And Weeks 4 and 5 combined should take you less time than Week 3, so know you're not too far from the end.
