Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward (Nintendo 3DS) Review (9.1)  by
BEHOLD! The sequel to one of the best late-life DS games, 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors is here! A brand new story, new characters (with some returning ones from the previous game) and puzzles galore, this sequel is a fantastic and very welcome addition to the 3DS library.

If you're ready for one of the most engrossing and engaging stories in the realm of video games, as well as clever puzzles and a unique gameplay progression complete with multiple endings depending on what you do, THIS IS THE GAME FOR YOU.

I was kind of hoping that Zero would make this thread (since it'd be pretty appropriate for him to do so - if you know the story of 999, I think you'll know what I'm talking about) but I'm not waiting any longer! Now is the time to discuss Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward!

Mine should be arriving from Amazon tomorrow, with the pre-order bonus watch and everything! I'm glad I didn't miss out this time, since I don't have the 999 watch.

Changed the name to reflect the whole "Zero Escape" part.

Will definitely 100% be playing this game. But I'm not sure when. I think my brother may be buying it so I will wait until he is done.

My copy from Amazon is waiting at the office of my apartment complex,so I may get a chance to start it tonight but I bought the Vita version.

I loved 999, hope to get my hands on this soon.

So far I'm enjoying the game a lot. However, I will say that I enjoyed the pacing of 999 a bit more. In that game, they took some time to introduce each character, let the player get to talk to them and get to know them. There was also a firm setting of "place" - you pretty much knew where you were. And thanks to the first puzzle, you knew you were in immediate danger.

Things are more quickly glossed over in the beginning of this one, and I'm not quite sure exactly where I am. (is it a warehouse? another ship? a fortress? something else?) We didn't even really meet the character you're playing as (in the first game, you are introduced to Junpei almost immediately) nor are we told how he got there. Or how any of the characters got to be part of the Nonary Game. But maybe that's the point. If the storytelling in this game is as solid as the original, then I'm cool with just going with the flow. For now.

Sigh... I can't find it anywhere.
I want this game very much, though I am still undecided whether I will pick up the 3DS or the Vita version.
It'll probably be the one I find first.

I bought this game this morning. Long family weekend will be so much better!

@Davenor
Where did you find it?
Maybe I should go check again tonight!

@ploot

I got mine at EB today (New Brunswick)... have you checked those? I thought that Ontario/Quebec would get it before since I think it ships out from Ontario.

They had a bunch at Gamebuzz in Montreal.

If you have a Vita and are having trouble finding a physical copy, why not just download it? No more hunting required, just log into PSN and get that thing on your memory stick!

I was tempted to do so but I heard that note taking is better on the 3DS. Plus, I have 999 on the DS so I decided to lean toward Nintendo (plus there's a Club Nintendo Code! WHOO!)

I found it at an EB today! They received exactly one copy for each system. I bought half their stock.

Just getting into it. Escaped the first area, Kind of wished they had voiced Sigma (the du-du-du from him seems woefully out of place). Overall, its off to a good start.

Edit- I'm glad I can pretty much switch between English/Japanese on every play through! If I'm in close quarters with the kids, they can simply listen to Japanese potty mouths. LOL

@ploot

Yeah I was pleasantly surprised there was a Club Nintendo code in the case. Really didn't think a game like that would contain a code, but... hey. I'm not gonna complain. Also...an EB? As in, Electronics Boutique? They haven't switched all of those over to Gamestop yet?

@Deerock69

Yeah, the lack of Sigma's voice is kind of odd. But I wonder if they did that so that you would hear Sigma's voice as "your own" voice?
10/26/12, 15:13
I played the first room this morning. It seems obvious that Sigma wasn't given a voice since he's meant to be you, but it still throws me off that he doesn't have one.

Just to give you guys a heads up, apparently there is a file corrupting bug in the 3DS version of VLR. Reposting the info from GAF

What is this bug? Should I be worried?

There is a bug that's verified to occur in the Pressure Exchange (PEC) puzzle room. If you save while in this room, the game will crash and you will have to delete the save and start over.

Yikes! Will this be fixed in the future ala patch?

No information is available at this time. We can only hope a patch is possible.

What if I save in a different slot?

Unfortunately the 3DS version of the game only has one save slot.

So if the game crashes, my save is nuked?

Only if it crashes when you save in the PEC room. Other crashes have occurred that don't involve saving where the save is unharmed.

Does this bug affect the Vita version as well?

No, it does not. No bugs of this nature have been reported regarding the Vita edition of Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward.

I've already bought it on 3DS! How do I avoid wrecking my save file?

Do not save in the PEC room puzzle!. The game may still crash, but so long as you save before you start that room and not during the puzzle, your save file should remain intact.

Does this bug occur in other puzzle rooms?

Unconfirmed, but better to be safe than sorry. You might want to refrain from saving your game during any Puzzle room segments and only save during Novel segments.

Ah, that sucks that there is a bug in the 3DS version. How could there have been a bug in one version, but not the other?

@anon_mastermind
Oh no! Did I make the wrong choice?!

@GameDadGrant
A serious question:
I noticed you've bought a lot of the recent 3DS/DS games. How are you balancing your time? I've been playing Code of Princess mostly lately, but I want to play VLR, and I feel like Pokemon Black 2 is being neglected!
10/26/12, 23:11
@ploot

My time isn't balanced, it's completely lopsided!

I'm focusing my efforts on Code of Princess and Virtue's Last Reward right now. Pokémon is (sadly) getting pushed aside at the moment. If I'm looking to just kill a few minutes, I'll fire up some Crosswords Plus (great time killer while the wife is watching some crap on TV like '90210' or 'Grey's Anatomy'). And once in a while I'll be in the mood for some Starfox 64 3D, and now that I have that digitally (for only $20, woot!), I can scratch that itch whenever I like.

But yeah, most of my time is with Code of Princess and Virtue's Last Reward.

Dammit, I was hoping the game would be delivered today (Amazon and Fedex both say the estimated delivery is today, and I used Amazon Prime so it should be two-day delivery) but the tracking info doesn't say "out for delivery" yet. And I had it shipped to my workplace, and I leave in ten minutes

Amazon usually ships my stuff UPS and I've never had a problem with it being delivered on time. They use Fedex this once, and it doesn't come.
