So uh... guys... what do you think about Sony's 'Move' controller? [roundtable]

Sony announced the official name at GDC earlier.

Blatant wii-mote rip-off? Or something entirely new?

Discuss.

WOW someone has sex on the mind

Well I guess that'd be good fan support but not good sales support. They'd be missing potential sales if they did that from people who would actually rebuy the game just to play it like that, as well as peopled who missed it the first time around or new customers.

Sony has relaunched their damn system like 3 times already (I'm including price cut, sku's, redesign, and now MOVE) and if they truly wanted a fresh start they should rerelease their big hitters. I dunno. Maybe not. Just saying, they'd be losing some sales if they just quietly updated dated it.

Does anyone else see the oxymoron that would be a "fresh start" by "re-releasing" something? Most of those "big hitters" aren't off the market yet, they can just be patched. Why rebrand them?

Q: Why rebrand them?

A: $

I just feel like this isn't going to appeal to Wii haters or casuals, and Wii lovers don't really need another motion controller.

I like the controller, except for the big ball at the end. I think this is not going to be so much of a threat to Nintendo until the next generation IF Sony decides to pack it in with the PS4 as a standard controller, along with the Dual Shock 4.

5. Hardcore PS3 fanboys have already built up a strong resistance to motion control and it might be hard for them to reconcile a purchase. If the fanboys are not on board, this thing could fail early and huge.

Here's the thing about the true PS3 fanboys. They listen to ANYTHING Sony tells them. Remember when Sony said "No one wants Backward Compatibility anymore?" Yeah, now the mantra is "I can just go buy a PS2 for cheap, no big deal." HD was only suddenly super important when Sony said it was. So I don't think this will be an issue, since they'll be on board if Sony says it's the thing to do. (Of course the Wii will still suck because it isn't in HD, which again is super important.)
This is right. My friend is a huge PS3 fanboy and he is loving the motion control support. He was planning to get the black Wii (or so he said) but now he'll skip it in favor of this. He thinks Sony is going to revolutionize motion control gaming.

Personally, I think this is a Wii remote rip-off that will fail because it's too little, too late. And for many other reasons already stated.

Well if there's one thing Sony is great at, it's copying the **** out of everything they see- I MEAN- revolutionizing gaming...

It's amusing how blatant the Wii influenced this thing. But you know what, I hope nothing but the best. Gaming as a whole as been pretty sour for me for a while now, and anything different like this is a good thing for me. I am more interested in Natal, however.

I'm not exactly enamored by it, and I find myself chuckling when Sony proudly hypes it up when it is essentially a rip-off of the very thing that they had been shit-talking in the early days of the generation.

That said, I don't blame the company... this isn't the first time that Nintendo has come up with a new controller idea and everybody else copied it, and it probably won't be the last. Nintendo is the primary innovator of this industry, home of a lot of brilliant minds over the years. This is just a reminder.

As for the device itself, it looks really promising. If it gets a lot of support and kicks ass, count me in.

I think the Sony wand will end up getting more support than Natal. I just don't see it working as well in real life as their closed-room demos do. I really think it's going to be buggy as all get out and more of a novelty than anything. Not saying I don't want to try it, that's just the feeling I get from the whole camera-looking-at-the-room-and-figuring-out-people-vs.-objects thing.

I think it's interesting, even if it's just Sony copying Nintendo yet again, but some of the things I've heard from it don't make it sound like it really could rival the Wiimote with M+, which is a disappointment because competition fuels innovation and creativity, so if Nintendo felt threatened by this, their next controller for the next system would of course be really refined over the Wiimote (not that it won't be anyway, just perhaps even more so).

I find motion controls to be interesting, and I'd like to see it expanded upon to help create some really immersive experiences.

I dont like the design, i have read indy's post and it seems its not as good as the media wants us to believe, it has almost cero support or hype from their own users (the ps3 lobby hates it).

But if they reduce the price and release kill zone 3 and it really works, it could be fun.

I love Wii motion controls and I own a PS3 but I'm not even sure if I care about this?

Though I have a weird relationship with my PS3. I was counting my PS3 games the other day and realized I have 13 (and about 8? PSN), which kind of shocked me, because I didn't remember playing that many PS3 games. And then I noticed I have a lot of games I really enjoyed (Valkyria Chronicles, LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear Solid 4, Dead Space, Braid, Pixeljunk Monsters, etc.) which again shocked me, because I feel sort of wishy washy about my PS3 overall and don't remember all the great experiences I had with it unless I sit down and think about it. I don't regret buying it or anything, it's been a great compliment to my other platforms, but I'm not ENTHUSIASTIC about it.

I just can't see myself buying a new controller for the console unless there is some must play game behind it.

I think Natal's a total joke and a failure in the making. MS has made some pretty damn good moves this gen but Natal looks like a total crock.

Also, I'd like the PSM if it didn't have that stupid ball at the top. That's the price they pay for copying Nintendo I guess; They need a stupid colored ball at the top of their controller.

I think it's true for now, yeah. They could add it, though. (And they seem to be pushing dual BASE UNIT play, although that seems prohibitively expensive.) I'm curious if the BASE UNIT has vibration (almost a given) and an internal speaker (probably not).

Also, the alternative to buying a 'Nunchuk' (not included in the $100 pack) is holding the SixAxis in your left hand. Bleah.

I can't imagine that's at all comfortable.

Sony Sub Controller at the moment does not have any motion sensing...oh well.

I managed to hunt down Indy83's post comparing the two:

"Arc will be fully capable of 1:1 controls.

How many real games use 1:1 controlsis another story, as its a poor game mechanic to base a real game on.

Arcs only weakness is its reliance on the playstation eye for translational movement tracking, handicapping its refresh rate to that of a videocamera.

Like the wiimote with motion +, or more likely the six axis, arc contains accelerometers and gyroscopes. However, the reliance of the playstation eye for real tracking of the translational movement axis will prevent the arc from having the same fast paced games as the wii.

Even though the playstation eye is a top of the line camera input device, its refresh rate pales in comparison to the wiimotes.

120 hz vs 24,000,000 hz.

This is why Nintendo turned down video input for the wii."

This quote from IGN's interview with Reggie made me laugh:

I think the key question is, how will they respond when we continue to innovate if this is their best effort?

Hope it is more than just talk.

That monstrosity isn't even comfortable to hold with both hands.
